Windsor supplies the day's only British or Irish Pattern race, but the best betting opportunities sit across the card rather than in the orbit of one short-priced Group 3 favourite. The approach is to oppose cramped prices when the evidence permits, give improving horses room to improve and demand a generous margin where the draw or race shape introduces risk.

The going is good, good to firm in places, with a GoingStick reading of 6.4 after watering. There are seven races and 79 active runners after Good Earth and Lahina Bay came out of the opener. Windsor 14:12 | Arnaz | 2pt win at 9/2, General

Arnaz returns to ordinary company after contesting a much stronger Class 2 at Brighton. His two Chepstow wins before that came from positive positions, and this track gives him the chance to use the same uncomplicated speed. The recent sixth looks better than the bare figure because he was asked to meet better horses only five days after winning.

Havana Halo is the next best at a double-figure price. She was second over this course and distance last time and remains on the same mark, while a 3lb claim helps. Stock Market is admirably consistent but stall 12 may force him to work earlier than ideal.

VERDICT: Arnaz, 2pt win at 9/2, General. Do not chase below 4/1. Havana Halo at 12/1 is the next best.

Windsor 14:42 | Polyxena | 2pt win at 11/2, General

POLYXENA did more than merely win on debut here in July. She travelled with inexperience, then quickened decisively once organised, the kind of finish that normally points to improvement. A wide draw demands restraint, but 11/2 compensates for that tactical problem in a novice where many rivals still have something to prove.

Romotoso is the next best and the clear form standard after finishing third and second. She is likely to get first run, although 11/8 leaves little margin for another keen passage. Thai Baht and Sequel Star have place claims without offering the same upside as the selection.

VERDICT: Polyxena, 2pt win at 11/2, General. Do not chase below 5/1. Romotoso at 11/8 is the next best.

Windsor 15:12 | So Tempting | 0.5pt e/w at 20/1, Sky Bet or Paddy Power, 4 places

SO TEMPTING is priced as though her recent second at Chepstow were an isolated flash, yet she again travelled into the race at Catterick before flattening out late. She is back on fast ground, receives weight from every rival bar one and now wears a first-time visor. Her wide stall is a complication, but it may also allow Ashley Lewis to keep her out of the early scrimmage.

Past Passion is the next best after strong placed efforts at Nottingham, Ffos Las and Ascot. She owns the best recent speed figure in the field, though she has had several chances and is short enough for a maiden in a busy nursery.

VERDICT: So Tempting, 0.5pt e/w at 20/1, Sky Bet or Paddy Power, 4 places. Do not chase below 16/1. Past Passion at 4/1 is the next best.

Windsor 15:42 | Ecclefechan | 2pt win at 11/4, bet365

ECCLEFECHAN has improved markedly since moving to a mile, winning over this course and distance before following up at Yarmouth. Crucially, she races from an unchanged handicap mark here, so the market is not asking her to prove the same improvement against a penalty. Her low weight is another advantage in a race where the principal dangers carry at least 13lb more.

Ascending Star is the next best and should enjoy a tactical position near the lead. He has finished third twice since his Lingfield win, but his tendency to find one or two stronger late makes Ecclefechan the more attractive bet at the prices.

VERDICT: Ecclefechan, 2pt win at 11/4, bet365. Do not chase below 11/4. Ascending Star at 2/1 is the next best.

Windsor 16:15 | Maho Bay | 2pt win at 7/2, General

MAHO BAY is the price-led alternative to Raaheeb. The favourite is the best horse in the race but returns from the Irish Derby at a restrictive price. Maho Bay was denied a clear passage when fifth in the Hampton Court Stakes and his earlier Newmarket win showed how effective he can be at ten furlongs when able to use his stride.

Raaheeb is the next best and an obvious standard-setter after winning the Sandown Classic Trial before finishing fourth in the Irish Derby. He may win, but Maho Bay has enough talent, tactical speed and stable strength to make 7/2 the better proposition.

VERDICT: Maho Bay, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Do not chase below 3/1. Raaheeb at 5/6 is the next best.

Windsor 16:45 | Aura Champagne | 1pt e/w at 7/1, bet365, 3 places

AURA CHAMPAGNE has been third on all three starts, including over ten furlongs at Newbury, and that reliable level is valuable against a favourite with only one public run and two well-bred newcomers. She can use stall one to hold a handy position and should not be inconvenienced by the ground.

Without Prejudice is the next best after drawing clear on debut at Newmarket. A penalty and a very short price leave no room for regression, while Yamnah is respected on connections but must learn on the job.

VERDICT: Aura Champagne, 1pt e/w at 7/1, bet365, 3 places. Do not chase below 7/1. Without Prejudice at 4/7 is the next best.

Windsor 17:15 | My Mate Mackley | 2pt win at 7/2, General

MY MATE MACKLEY has finished first, second or third on five of his last six starts and comes here only six days after another sound second. He can race just behind the pace, which is preferable to committing too soon around Windsor, and his current mark still looks workable on the evidence of his Lingfield win.

Washington Heir is the next best. His Class 2 run can be ignored for this purpose and he was previously beaten only a short head at Brighton. Cabeza De Llave has course-and-distance form, but his recent record suggests a place is more likely than a win.

VERDICT: My Mate Mackley, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Do not chase below 3/1. Washington Heir at 9/2 is the next best.

Best bets of the day

Ecclefechan is the day's most persuasive blend of recent improvement, course suitability and handicapping opportunity. Arnaz is the best alternative at a bigger price after a valid excuse in stronger company. So Tempting is the boldest value play, while Aura Champagne provides the steadier place profile.
