Ascot has no Pattern race this afternoon, yet its supporting card is deeper than anything else staged in Britain or Ireland. Three Class 2 contests, including a £23,193 mile handicap, make the Berkshire meeting the natural place to concentrate. The official fixture page, Racing Post card and At The Races card confirm seven races from 13:55 to 17:25.

The ground is Good, Good to Firm in places. Early showers should clear into a mostly dry and blustery afternoon, according to the Met Office forecast for Ascot. King Of Thunder is a non-runner in the last, leaving 69 active runners. The Racing API supplied the declarations and available histories, while the seven Oddschecker Ascot grids were checked across the permitted bookmakers at 08:09 BST. Prices can move before the off.

The card asks for discrimination rather than aggression. Aalto has recent Class 2 winning form and a close course-and-distance third, while Soldier Of The Sea is the runner whose price most clearly underestimates what he has achieved. The two each-way bets are reserved for the races with enough depth and verified place terms to justify them.

Ascot 13:55 | Cancan In The Rain | 2pt win at 7/2, General

Next best: Tex at 5/2

The opening amateur riders' handicap rewards a horse who can travel without wasting energy, and Cancan In The Rain has been shaping as if this mile is within reach. He finished only three-quarters of a length away at Newmarket last time, had previously run well twice at Ascot and was competitive over a mile at York despite a slow start.

Tex is the danger. He won over seven furlongs here in July and finished strongly over a mile at Brighton, so the return to Ascot is positive. Eazy On The Eye brings three consecutive seconds but may have to work for the lead, while Dannick's two recent wins came on the all-weather and his soft-ground Goodwood run was less persuasive.

Cancan In The Rain has not won this season, but he owns the strongest blend of track evidence, recent form and a workable mark. 7/2 is sufficient compensation for trusting him to finish the job.

Ascot 14:30 | Chymbulak | 2pt win at 11/4, General

Next best: San Jose at 7/2

Only Chymbulak and San Jose have raced, and that public evidence matters in an eleven-runner maiden. Chymbulak was pushed along before the straight on his Kempton debut yet stayed on powerfully to take second. He was beaten five and a half lengths, but the way he completed seven furlongs strongly suggests normal improvement can make him difficult to contain.

San Jose finished fourth in a Class 2 Newbury maiden and therefore sets a respectable turf standard. He briefly moved into third before tiring, and James Doyle is a significant booking. Korsakov represents the in-form William Haggas and Tom Marquand combination, while Impasto and Ayuq come from yards capable of producing a ready newcomer.

There is guesswork in any field containing nine debutants, but Chymbulak has already shown that he can finish a seven-furlong race. That is enough to make 11/4 fair rather than short.

Verdict: Chymbulak, 2pt win at 11/4, General. Minimum 5/2. San Jose is next best.

Ascot 15:05 | Clarity | 2pt win at 3/1, Bet365

Next best: Claudette at 17/8

Clarity brings an official mark of 80 into a maiden full of newcomers. She pulled hard and took over too soon at Salisbury last time, but still finished second over a mile. Her earlier Goodwood fifth came in Class 2 company and she had also stayed on well on debut, so the experience is both deep and relevant.

Claudette is clearly feared for John and Thady Gosden with William Buick booked, and the market says she is ready. Divide And Conquer is another debutant from a powerful combination, while Just Scarlet shaped better than fourth place suggests after losing ground at a key stage at Newmarket.

Clarity must settle more efficiently, but stall two allows James Doyle to find cover and make better use of her proven stamina. 3/1 is the right price to prefer substance over reputation.

Ascot 15:40 | Soldier Of The Sea | 2pt win at 9/2, Bet365

Next best: Pure Mint at 4/5

Pure Mint is the likeliest winner after drawing clear at Ripon, but 4/5 asks us to assume that easy Class 4 success is worth a Class 2 penalty. Soldier Of The Sea has already won at Ffos Las and then lost narrowly at Salisbury, where he travelled with the pace and kept battling after being challenged.

William Knight has sent out five winners from twelve runners in the last fortnight, and Taylor Fisher's allowance effectively gives Soldier Of The Sea a useful weight advantage over the favourite. Does Mary Know has finished second in a Class 2 maiden and is respected, while Brushstroke showed speed when narrowly denied at Lingfield.

Soldier Of The Sea must find a little improvement, but he is battle-tested, tactically uncomplicated and much the better price. 9/2 makes him the next best bet of the day.

Ascot 16:15 | Aalto | 3pt win at 5/2, BetMGM

Next best: Jonny Concrete at 11/2

Aalto was hampered at the start before winning a Class 2 at Newmarket in July, then returned to Ascot and finished a close third after another slow beginning. He has a performance rating and speed figure of 90, gets James Doyle and meets every rival at the same weight within the two classified bands.

Jonny Concrete arrives on the back of decisive wins at York and Musselburgh. He is improving and should sit closer to the pace than Aalto, though this is a stronger assignment. Jolly Roger is reliable without winning often, while Veblen Good possesses the highest peak figures but needs to erase a poor Thirsk run only seven days ago.

Aalto's hold-up style always requires a clear passage, but his recent Class 2 evidence is the cleanest on offer. If he breaks on terms, 5/2 can look generous. He is the NAP.

Ascot 16:48 | Classic | 1pt e/w at 9/1, General, 4 places

Next best: Arctic Thunder at 13/2

This is the day's deepest race and Classic brings the right big-field form. He won a Class 2 at Newbury in May and finished third of eighteen in the Golden Mile at Goodwood last time, beaten only a length and a half after travelling comfortably. The Racing Post's Friday analysis also identified that effort as a career-best speed figure.

Arctic Thunder is thriving after commanding Class 3 wins at Salisbury and Haydock, and his upward curve makes him the chief danger. Hickory has already won this course and distance, Hard Endeavor was narrowly denied at Sandown, and Moonfall scored here at the Royal meeting. The field is too good to pretend any one of them is bombproof.

Classic's stable is quiet, but his Goodwood run is the strongest recent handicap evidence and 9/1 was available with four places. That price allows an each-way bet rather than forcing an overconfident win-only view.

Ascot 17:25 | Raging Raj | 1pt e/w at 7/1, Sky Bet and Paddy Power, 3 places

Next best: Hambelton at 7/2

Raging Raj has won two of his last three completed starts and the latest was decisive. He struck the front more than two furlongs out at Thirsk, drew away from the field and kept going powerfully. His earlier Yarmouth success showed he can dominate, while stall two gives Lewis Edmunds the choice of tracking or pressing the pace.

Hambelton has won twice over a mile and was caught only late at York in between. The return to seven furlongs is the question, though he is clearly in form. First Legion drops from stronger races but returns from 83 days off for a cold yard, while Golden Brown has Listed juvenile form to revive after two lesser performances.

Raging Raj carries 5lb more than at Thirsk, yet the manner of that win suggested he had something left. 7/1 with three places is enough to support him each-way in the eight-runner finale.

Best bets of the day

Aalto is the NAP at 5/2 because his Newmarket win and close Ascot third are the strongest current Class 2 evidence in the 16:15. Soldier Of The Sea, the next best at 9/2, has already won and gone close while the favourite is priced as though improvement is certain.

The two bigger-price positions are Classic, 1pt e/w at 9/1, General, 4 places, whose Golden Mile third was a career-best effort, and Raging Raj, 1pt e/w at 7/1, Sky Bet and Paddy Power, 3 places, who comes here after a dominant Thirsk win.
