Haydock has become a searching examination after sustained rain, and that changes the order of merit across a card headed by the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup. Raw speed still matters, but the horses asked to use it through heavy ground must also settle, travel and see out their races. The most attractive prices belong to runners with either proven soft-ground substance or a piece of form which suggests the market has judged one defeat too harshly.
The official description was heavy, with a GoingStick reading of 5.1 and the inside course in use. Rail movements add 22 yards to the 13:25, 13:55, 16:50 and 17:25, and 74 yards to the two staying races. Six horses were withdrawn before the 08:17 BST market check. The current card and going were cross-checked with the Racing Post Haydock racecard, Sporting Life and the official Sprint Cup Day information.

Quick race guide
13:25 Superior Mile | 13:55 Ascendant Stakes | 14:30 Three-year-old handicap | 15:05 Old Borough Cup | 15:40 Sprint Cup | 16:15 Five-furlong handicap | 16:50 World Pool handicap | 17:25 One-mile handicap
Haydock 13:25 | The Lost King | 1pt e/w at 8/1, General, 3 places
NEXT BEST: Colori Forever at 14/1
The Superior Mile asks an awkward question. Dancing Gemini is the highest-rated horse and his close Lockinge fourth is the best single piece of form, but he has not won for a while and a mile through deep ground gives him no hiding place. Needle Match is much less exposed and shaped well behind Isaac Newton at Leopardstown, yet this is a sharp rise in demand for a colt with only four starts behind him. Persica is solid rather than spectacular, while Hankelow must rebound from two flat performances.
I prefer The Lost King, whose two York wins showed both tactical speed and a willingness to go through the line. He travelled close to a solid pace when scoring over this trip in July, then put a useful handicap field away decisively on good to soft ground at the Ebor meeting. The move into Group 3 company is the obvious objection and he has no heavy-ground run on his record, but his action and the way he finished at York suggest the slower surface need not blunt him. At 8/1, the price gives us room for that uncertainty.
Colori Forever is the danger at a double-figure price. He was second on heavy ground as a juvenile, improved through strong handicaps this spring and finished well in Listed company at Newmarket. The concern is that his Royal Ascot Group 3 run was ordinary, but a patient ride could bring him into this late if the leaders overdo matters.
VERDICT: The Lost King, 1pt e/w at 8/1, General, 3 places. Back at 8/1 or bigger. Colori Forever is the next best at 14/1.
Haydock 13:55 | Rocket Boy | 3pt win at 7/4, PricedUp
NEXT BEST: First Law at 7/4
This Listed race is a contest of potential rather than established depth. First Law made a winning debut at Sandown, coming from the rear despite looking inexperienced, and the Appleby and Buick combination commands respect. He now meets much deeper ground and has to improve markedly on the bare figure.
Rocket Boy has already made that step. He came from last to win at Yarmouth and then finished a strong third in Listed company at Salisbury, doing his best work at the finish. That experience matters against several colts who are still learning their jobs, and his finishing style offers more comfort than most about the heavy mile. Rafe's Da Man has improved with racing but his Goodwood success came on a much quicker surface. Arthurian is respected after a course second, though this jump from maiden company is substantial.
VERDICT: Rocket Boy, 3pt win at 7/4, PricedUp. The bet is acceptable at 7/4 or bigger. First Law is the next best at 7/4.
Haydock 14:30 | Lopeo | 1pt e/w at 10/1, bet365, 3 places
NEXT BEST: Galilean Quality at 15/8
Galilean Quality sets a clear form standard after finishing second over this trip at York. He was detached early, met a little interference and still finished strongly, so a favourite's chance is easy to see. The price, however, assumes he will reproduce that effort on the deepest ground he has encountered. Mythical Bay beat him at Newmarket in July but ran poorly behind him at York, while Reem Rak is progressive without yet proving herself at this level.
The value lies with Lopeo. His latest Newmarket run was too bad to be true, but the two previous efforts over nearly this trip were sound, particularly his Doncaster second after racing keenly. The key piece is his juvenile win over a mile on heavy ground at Goodwood, where he travelled into the race and kept finding. He is unproven as a thorough stayer, but he is lightly raced, has had time to freshen up and receives 13lb from the favourite. 10/1 compensates for the stamina question.
Asia Force may control the pace after making all at Carlisle, but the rise in grade and different ground are serious tests. Pierre Grosse keeps finding one too good, while Bridge Of Eagles is asked to jump sharply in distance.
VERDICT: Lopeo, 1pt e/w at 10/1, bet365, 3 places. Take 9/1 or bigger. Galilean Quality remains the next best at 15/8.
Haydock 15:05 | Stressfree | 1pt e/w at 7/1, William Hill, 3 places
NEXT BEST: Aegean Prince at 9/4
Four withdrawals have changed the shape of the Old Borough Cup. Aegean Prince is fascinating off 99 after only four starts. He made all at Ascot and was second in Listed company on very soft ground at Deauville, but returning from 320 days off in a strongly run staying handicap is a demanding assignment at a short price.
Stressfree has a very different profile. His recent figures look plain, yet he ran better than sixth at York last time after being held up and making late ground. He is a course winner, has form on heavy going and has slipped to a mark only 2lb above the one from which he finished second at Ripon in April. The step back to a stiff 1m6f on testing ground should turn this into the sustained stamina examination he wants. The market has him at 7/1, which is fair for a horse who does not need to return to his peak to be involved.
Finalise is consistent and travels as though this trip suits, but she lacks a recent win and has to prove herself in the mud. Ashnak's Ayr second on soft is respected, while In The Breeze could revive if the ground brings his Goodwood staying win into play. Glen To Glen is intriguing after success over fences, though his latest Flat evidence is less convincing.
VERDICT: Stressfree, 1pt e/w at 7/1, William Hill, 3 places. Hold out for 7/1. Aegean Prince is the next best at 9/4.
Haydock 15:40 | Kind Of Blue | 2pt win at 4/1, PricedUp
NEXT BEST: Big Mojo at 10/1
Heavy ground makes this Sprint Cup less about a single burst and more about which top-class sprinter can sustain speed for the full six furlongs. Almeraq deserves respect as the Royal Ascot winner and he can be excused his July Cup run after racing too freely without ideal cover. His best form has nevertheless come on faster ground, and 11/4 asks us to take plenty on trust.
Kind Of Blue is a stronger fit. He was second in this race last year, won the 2024 Champions Sprint on soft ground and shaped as though he retained his ability when runner-up at York in May. Royal Ascot went wrong from the start when he was slowly away, and a break since then looks more like a reset than a negative. James Fanshawe has him fresh, James Doyle takes the ride and the sustained six-furlong test is exactly what he wants. The Jockey Club's Sprint Cup preview also underlines how deliberately connections have returned to this target.
Big Mojo is the next best. Last year's winner returned to form in a Curragh Group 3 and is a much bigger price than when disappointing earlier in the summer. His heavy-ground ability is not as secure, but course form in a sprint of this quality is valuable. Paborus is capable of better than his York run and Coppull arrives after a Group 2 win, though the three-year-old has done most of his best work on quick going. Marvelman will see the trip out but may be vulnerable to a specialist at six furlongs.
VERDICT: Kind Of Blue, 2pt win at 4/1, PricedUp. 7/2 is the minimum. Big Mojo is the next best at 10/1.
Haydock 16:15 | Trilby | 2pt win at 3/1, General
NEXT BEST: Toyotomi at 7/1
There is no mystery about what Trilby wants. He won over this course and distance on soft ground in May, followed up at Carlisle in June and returned to winning form on soft at Beverley last week. Both of those five-furlong successes came from off the pace, a useful quality in a race containing several horses who like to be involved early. He is 5lb higher than at Beverley and this is tougher, but the ground has removed much of the guesswork.
Jer Batt ran here yesterday and looked a tired horse late on, so it is difficult to support him on the quick return. Arklow Lad has two Class 2 wins this season and is a major player if forgiving Hamilton, while Poatan's Sandown Listed third gives him a class angle. Toyotomi is the next best because his Goodwood success came on soft and he was not disgraced there six days ago. Advertised also has claims after his Hamilton second but has still to prove this level of ground suits.
VERDICT: Trilby, 2pt win at 3/1, General. Take 11/4 or bigger. Toyotomi is the next best at 7/1.
Haydock 16:50 | Rhoscolyn | 2pt win at 7/2, General
NEXT BEST: Ata Rangi at 11/4
Rhoscolyn has had a busy spell, but his second at Epsom five days ago was his best run for some time and the return to Haydock is in his favour. He is a course-and-distance winner, acts on heavy ground and has dropped to 82, a mark 9lb below the one from which he won at Goodwood last summer. There should be enough pace from Star Anthem, Brighton Boy and possibly Yanifer to let Daniel Tudhope settle him and make one sustained run.
The quick turnaround is the clear risk, particularly after three starts within ten days, but he is not being asked to find form from nowhere. Ata Rangi is the next best after dropping to 87. He won here in May and has previous heavy-ground form, though his last Ascot effort was disappointing and the price leaves less margin. Brian is well handicapped on old form and shaped better at Newbury, while Brighton Boy should be close to the pace but is still searching for a first win this season. Cape Ashizuri is a non-runner.
VERDICT: Rhoscolyn, 2pt win at 7/2, General. 3/1 is the minimum. Ata Rangi is the next best at 11/4.
Haydock 17:25 | Crown Office | 3pt win at 5/2, PricedUp
NEXT BEST: Military Leader at 15/2
The closing handicap brings Crown Office back in trip after his Nottingham second over 1m2f. He travelled strongly there, moved into the race four furlongs out and found only a rival with first run too good. His sole win came on soft ground, the low draw is a positive on the current configuration and William Haggas reaches for Tom Marquand. The central doubt is whether he will settle well enough in a rougher handicap, but the return to a mile should help rather than hinder.
Military Leader is the next best. He has finished in the first three on six consecutive starts and scored convincingly at Thirsk last time. A 9lb rise and the move into Class 4 company demand more, yet his Chester second on soft gives him a sound-ground excuse and he remains in better heart than most. The Sweet Escape is also thriving but climbs from Class 5 company for an out-of-form stable. Final Night is consistent on top of the ground, while Caim needs to rediscover last season's soft-ground Listed form.
VERDICT: Crown Office, 3pt win at 5/2, PricedUp. Back at 9/4 or bigger. Military Leader is the next best at 15/2.
Best bets of the day
Kind Of Blue is the NAP at 4/1. His course second and soft-ground Group 1 win give him the most persuasive conditions case in the Sprint Cup. Rocket Boy is the next best of the day at 7/4, with his Listed experience and strong-finishing style separating him from an inexperienced field. The Lost King, Lopeo and Stressfree are the card's stronger value plays at their morning prices.
