BetOwl Daily Dossier - Salisbury 3rd September

Salisbury has assembled the one race today that deserves to stop the clock. The Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes is a proper Group 3 test, and Miss Kodi arrives with the most persuasive recent piece of form after finishing fourth in the Lowther at York. She has already won on good to soft ground, she travels close enough to the pace to avoid being hostage to fortune, and 11/4 leaves enough room for a bet.

This is the principal British or Irish meeting because the official racecourse page describes it as Salisbury's most valuable raceday of the season and its £75,000 feature is the day's only Pattern race. The full Racing Post card and Sporting Life racecards confirm an unusually deep supporting programme with two Class 2 contests and three Class 3 races. Haydock is the strongest alternative, but its best race is a Class 3 fillies' handicap and Newcastle's card peaks at the same grade.

The eight races run from 13:53 to 17:55 on Good to Soft, Soft in places. Costa Verde was taken out of the 15:39 at 07:14, leaving 74 active runners. Stalls are on the far side except for the 17:55, which starts from the inside, and the forecast is mostly cloudy. The Racing API supplied the live declarations and complete histories, while every permitted bookmaker cell on the eight Oddschecker Salisbury grids was checked at 08:10 BST. Prices can move before the off.

There are two bigger-priced horses who make the portfolio breathe. Fleetwater has a Salisbury win and a soft-ground Goodwood third in the form book, while Redbud Sixteen has already made all over the final race's exact course and distance. Neither needs invention to make the value case.

Salisbury 13:53 | Decalogue | 2pt win at 7/2, General

Next best: Prince Rasam at 9/4

This apprentice handicap contains more old questions than new answers, which makes Decalogue's latest Newmarket run particularly useful. He was sluggish from the stalls, settled last and still closed to finish third, beaten only a neck. That was his first convincing proof at a mile and came from the same mark of 69.

Prince Rasam returned from a break with an excellent second at Kempton and deserves his place near the head of the market. His turf record is less secure, however, and he has not raced since May. Decalogue is the younger horse, gets Alfie Redman rather than an inexperienced amateur having a first public spin, and should receive a pace to aim at from Thiscouldbefun.

The ground is the objection because Decalogue's best recent evidence came on a faster surface. Even so, his Newmarket finish suggests he has enough stamina for a more exacting mile, and 7/2 compensates for that uncertainty.

Verdict: Decalogue, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Minimum 11/4. Prince Rasam is the principal alternative.

Salisbury 14:28 | Night Star | 3pt win at 11/8, Bet365 and William Hill

Next best: My Boy at 9/4

Night Star has been placed in all three starts and his two Doncaster thirds came in Class 2 and Class 3 company over seven furlongs. He was doing his best work late on debut at Newbury on good to soft ground after meeting traffic, so the extra furlong should answer a need rather than create one.

My Boy is the danger. He ran fourth on debut at Newmarket despite wandering when asked to quicken, and Andrew Balding's juveniles usually learn from that first day. The newcomers from the Ed Walker and Ralph Beckett yards are respected, but the market asks us to buy their pedigrees without racecourse evidence.

Night Star must settle well enough over a mile, yet his professionalism is a serious edge in this company. 11/8 is short but fair for the one runner with three solid pieces of form and proven cut in the ground.

Verdict: Night Star, 3pt win at 11/8, Bet365 and William Hill. Minimum 5/4. My Boy is next best.

Salisbury 15:03 | Ahmadi | 2pt win at 11/4, General

Next best: Hereward at 2/1

Hereward's third at Deauville on soft ground is the strongest bare line, but 2/1 builds plenty of that into his price. Ahmadi shaped like the longer-term project when fourth on debut at Kempton. He was slow to find his rhythm, raced in the rear and made sustained late progress without being knocked about.

The step from seven furlongs to a mile should suit the Ralph Beckett colt, and Oisin Murphy keeps the ride. Rose Moon is a fascinating stablemate on debut, while Caelan's Rose brings a useful pedigree and a lighter weight, but both must solve the race in public for the first time.

Ahmadi's lack of turf experience is the clear risk. The available 11/4, rather than odds close to the favourite, is the reason to accept it.

Verdict: Ahmadi, 2pt win at 11/4, General. Minimum 11/4. Hereward is the next best.

Salisbury 15:39 | Thi Qar | 3pt win at 2/1, Bet365

Next best: Miss Miniver at 15/8

Thi Qar looked a winner in waiting at Newmarket. She travelled smoothly through a Class 2 maiden, took over inside the final furlong and was caught only close home. The performance rating of 97 is comfortably the best achieved by any runner in this field, and stall three gives Oisin Murphy options.

Miss Miniver also missed narrowly on debut, staying on from a handy position at Kempton. She is the obvious threat and may improve just as much, but Thi Qar's turf run came at this grade and reads as the more transferable piece of evidence. Rubyroo finished with purpose for third at Newcastle and is the interesting outsider.

There are newcomers from powerful yards, so this is not a penalty kick. At 2/1, however, Thi Qar offers the best balance of established class, tactical speed and improvement. She is the NAP.

Verdict: Thi Qar, 3pt win at 2/1, Bet365. Minimum 7/4. Miss Miniver is the next best.

Salisbury 16:14 | Miss Kodi | 2pt win at 11/4, General

Next best: Nuit d'Eclair at 5/2

Miss Kodi's fourth in the Group 2 Lowther is the day's strongest recent line. She raced close to the speed at York, kept finding on good to soft ground and finished only two and three-quarter lengths away. Her earlier Chepstow success on the same broad surface description was achieved with a decisive late burst.

Nuit d'Eclair commands respect after being caught close home in a seven-furlong Group 3 at Newmarket. Dropping back to six may sharpen her, although she has done her racing on good to firm ground. Dark Issue has Royal Ascot form and Love Is chased home a useful filly on good to soft at Goodwood, which makes this a genuine Pattern contest rather than a match.

Miss Kodi has to confirm she can reproduce the York effort only a fortnight later. Her proven ground, uncomplicated pace position and 11/4 price make that the right risk.

Salisbury 16:49 | Fleetwater | 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, Bet365 and William Hill, 3 places

Next best: Zen Diva at 7/2

Zen Diva is the progressive horse and may again dominate from the front, but a 10lb rise for her latest course win turns 7/2 into a demanding quote in a better race. Fleetwater offers a different route. She won a Class 3 over this course and distance in June, then found traffic at Goodwood after travelling near the pace.

The most relevant line came earlier at Goodwood, where Fleetwater stayed on for third over six furlongs on soft ground. She races from only 2lb above her Salisbury-winning mark and David Egan replaces the apprentice who rode her last time. Havana Pusey is dangerous from stall one if allowed to stride on, while Albaydaa will appreciate returning to six furlongs.

Fleetwater needs the gaps to arrive and her hold-up style carries obvious risk. At 14/1, with three places verified, the price is large enough to take that chance against rivals whose recent form is already fully recognised.

Verdict: Fleetwater, 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, Bet365 and William Hill, 3 places. Minimum 11/1. Zen Diva is the next best.

Salisbury 17:24 | Boyfriend | 2pt win at 4/1, General

Next best: Colourband at 6/1

Boyfriend has produced his best sequence at five. He won at Sandown in May, finished third over ten furlongs there and was then beaten only narrowly at Goodwood after having to wait for room. The drop to a stiff mile should not inconvenience a horse with enough tactical pace to hold a position and enough stamina to finish.

Colourband is next best after making all or racing prominently in a productive summer. He has won at Bath and Windsor and ran fourth on good to soft ground at Chester. Principality ran well on soft at Goodwood only four days ago, but that quick return is a legitimate concern, while Shipbourne must rebound from a heavy defeat.

Boyfriend's stable has been quiet over the last fortnight, and he must carry 10st 2lb from stall eight. His current form is still more reliable than that of most of these, and 4/1 is a workable price.

Verdict: Boyfriend, 2pt win at 4/1, General. Minimum 7/2. Colourband is the next best.

Salisbury 17:55 | Redbud Sixteen | 1pt e/w at 7/1, General, 3 places

Next best: Aleatrix at 11/4

Aleatrix won over this exact course and distance on debut and receives 4lb from Redbud Sixteen, but she was beaten at 1/3 at Newmarket and now enters a handicap from a mark of 87. Redbud Sixteen has a less fashionable profile but a stronger price case.

He made all over this course and distance in June, then repeated the feat at Newbury over eleven furlongs. Doncaster was a setback, yet he went too hard in front on faster ground and weakened after being challenged three furlongs out. Back on an easier surface at a track where he has already travelled comfortably, Edward Greatrex can ration his speed more effectively.

Zgharta has been competing in stronger races and Lucky Camino is admirably consistent, so Redbud Sixteen cannot afford another pace error. The 7/1 available with three places gives that course record proper weight.

Verdict: Redbud Sixteen, 1pt e/w at 7/1, General, 3 places. Minimum 7/1. Aleatrix is the next best.

Best bets of the day

Thi Qar is the NAP at 2/1 after producing the best performance in the 15:39 when narrowly beaten in a Class 2 Newmarket maiden. Miss Kodi, the next best at 11/4, brings Group 2 form and proven good to soft ground into the Dick Poole.

The best bigger-price angles are Fleetwater, 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, Bet365 and William Hill, 3 places, whose course win and soft-ground third are directly relevant, and Redbud Sixteen, 1pt e/w at 7/1, General, 3 places, who returns to the exact course and distance of his June success.
