Cookies and similar technology
A cookie is a small file placed on a device by a website. Similar technologies, including local browser storage, can remember information or access information already stored on that device. UK rules require clear information about these technologies and, in most cases, consent before non-essential storage or access takes place.
What BetOwl currently uses
| Name or service | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
betowl-consent-2026-07 | First-party local storage | Remembers whether you accepted or rejected optional analytics and marketing categories, with the time of the choice | Until you clear it or BetOwl changes the consent version |
betowl-newsletter-prompt-2026-08 | First-party local storage | Honours your request not to see the newsletter invitation repeatedly, or remembers that signup was completed on this browser | 30 days after dismissal or one year after signup |
betowl-newsletter-prompt-seen | First-party session storage | Prevents the newsletter invitation appearing more than once during the same browsing session | Until the browser session ends |
betowl-owner-browser-v1 | First-party local storage on an authorised owner browser only | Prevents the site owner's own page views and performance measurements from being included in aggregate readership reports. It stores only an exclusion marker and no device fingerprint. | Until the owner clears browser storage |
| Vercel Web Analytics | Cookie-free aggregate measurement | Counts page views and reports broad information such as route, referrer, country and device type without storing a third-party cookie or a personal visitor profile | The temporary visitor identifier is discarded after 24 hours. Aggregate reporting may be retained by Vercel under the applicable service terms. |
| Vercel Speed Insights | Cookie-free performance measurement | Measures page-loading and interaction performance, including Core Web Vitals, so technical problems can be identified | Aggregate reporting is retained by Vercel under the applicable service terms. |
The preference records are used to honour choices you make on the site. Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights do not set analytics cookies and are configured only on the production Vercel site. BetOwl does not send names, email addresses, contact-form contents or newsletter details to these services.
Optional analytics and marketing
The analytics preference applies to any future service that stores information on your device, reads information from it or creates a more detailed visitor profile. Those optional services will remain off until the appropriate consent is given. No advertising tracker is currently connected. Rejecting optional categories does not prevent you from reading articles or using the main public features.
Control your choices
You can review the site’s preference panel using the button below. You can also clear local storage through your browser settings. Blocking all storage may prevent the site from remembering your choice, so the panel may appear again.
Changes and further information
We review this policy when the site’s technology changes. The date at the top shows the most recent review. Personal information associated with any future analytics service will also be covered by the privacy policy.
This policy reflects current ICO guidance on cookies and other storage and access technologies under PECR.
