Doncaster is the principal British and Irish meeting, with the Group 2 Flying Childers and Doncaster Cup supported by the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes on day two of the St Leger Festival. The straight-course speed races and the extended staying test create a varied card in which pace, stamina and current form must be judged separately.

VARZI has improved with each start since moving up to seven furlongs, following a debut second with a commanding Pontefract win. He made the running there and was allowed to coast home, so the bare margin understates the authority of the performance. Karl Burke is operating at 26 per cent over the past fortnight, and the dam won at Listed level over a mile on heavy ground.
Nabati is the next best at 13/8 after two wins from three starts and a strong speed figure. He sets a reliable standard but is short enough in a race containing two unbeaten improvers. Varzi has more to prove on the ratings, yet 18/1 with three verified places compensates for that uncertainty and recognises the scope in his profile.
VERDICT: Varzi, 0.5pt e/w at 18/1, BetMGM, 3 places. Back only at 16/1 or bigger. Nabati at 13/8 is the next best.

WIELD produced his best recent effort when the tongue-tie was fitted at Southwell, settling in midfield before closing strongly to miss by only a short head. Joe Fanning retired from ordinary race-riding last year but has prepared specifically for this contest, and his experience should help from stall three. The horse is still well treated on older form and has a clear chance if the equipment works as well again.
Anthropologist is the next best at 6/1 after finishing second at Newcastle and bringing the most consistent recent profile. He must carry five pounds more than Wield, however, and has also gone six starts without winning. The 15/2 available with four verified places makes Wield the more attractive each-way proposition.

TOKAIDO won four consecutive races in France before his York run, progressing from ordinary company to Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 success over five furlongs. He missed the break and pulled hard when stretched to six furlongs in a sales race last time, so that sixteenth place is easier to forgive than the form line suggests. Amy Murphy has six winners from twenty runners in the current fortnight.
Final Objective is the next best at 10/3 after a fast-finishing Gimcrack second and owns the strongest current speed figure. He is the safer option, but the market already recognises that effort. Tokaido returns to his proven trip and 12/1 with three verified places offers enough margin for the York failure and the rise in class.

WINDAY moved smoothly into second at Ffos Las before drawing six lengths clear on his Flat debut for Emmet Mullins. The form is below Group 2 level, but the manner of the win, his previous jumps experience and the eleven-pound allowance from Caballo De Mar give him a credible route to a large step forward. William Buick is an important booking for a lightly raced three-year-old over this specialist trip.
Caballo De Mar is the next best at 11/8 and has the established staying achievements, including nine career wins. His two most recent Group 2 runs were disappointing, however, and he carries a penalty. Winday is the riskier horse but 4/1 is a fair price for unexposed stamina in a race reduced to seven active runners.
VERDICT: Winday, 2pt win at 4/1, William Hill. Back only at 7/2 or bigger. Caballo De Mar at 11/8 is the next best.
Doncaster 15:35 | Silver Lake | 3pt win at 7/4, William Hill
SILVER LAKE has won three consecutive handicaps and produced her best performance when threading through traffic at York three weeks ago. She was denied a clear run until the final furlong but still found enough to lead close home on good-to-soft ground. The five-pound rise is offset by proven momentum, James Doyle keeps the ride and William Haggas has fourteen winners from fifty-eight runners in the current fortnight.
Nochebuena is the next best at 4/1 after winning at this course and distance before a narrow Ascot second. Her sixty-three-day absence is the main reservation. Silver Lake must prove herself over the extra furlong and a half, but her sustained York finish and current progression make 7/4 acceptable in a ten-runner field.
VERDICT: Silver Lake, 3pt win at 7/4, William Hill. Back only at 6/4 or bigger. Nochebuena at 4/1 is the next best.
Doncaster 16:10 | Victoria Night | 3pt win at Evens, William Hill
VICTORIA NIGHT shaped like the winner for much of her Sandown debut, racing close to the pace and fighting on after pulling hard before being denied only narrowly. That experience should help her settle in a field now reduced to four active runners. Sean Levey keeps the ride, and a repeat of the debut effort sets a clear standard against three rivals with limited or no public evidence.
She's Got A Way is the next best at 11/4 and represents the in-form Karl Burke yard with Ryan Moore booked. She is nevertheless making her debut, while Victoria Night has already shown she can compete strongly in a Class 2 maiden. Evens is not generous, but it reflects the cleanest evidence in the race.

Doncaster 16:45 | Launch Sequence | 2pt win at 4/1, William Hill
LAUNCH SEQUENCE has twice finished third in useful six-furlong maidens and was not disgraced when sixth over seven furlongs in a valuable York nursery. The return to six furlongs should allow James Doyle to use the colt's speed, while Karl Burke's current stable form remains a positive. An official mark of 85 is demanding for a maiden, but the York race provides stronger evidence than most rivals possess.
Pride Of Toledo is the next best at 4/1 after staying on from the rear to finish fourth in another York nursery. He shares top weight with the selection and may again need the race to unfold perfectly. Launch Sequence is preferred because the shorter trip can unlock improvement, with 4/1 offering a workable win price.

Doncaster 17:20 | Canvas | 2pt win at 11/2, William Hill
CANVAS ran much better than the bare margin when second at York five days ago. He set fractions that proved difficult to sustain, was headed approaching the final furlong and still kept on for second. Two earlier Doncaster wins confirm that the track suits him, while the return to ten furlongs gives Kieran O'Neill the chance to distribute his effort more evenly.
Fans Favourite is the next best at 4/1 after three wins from his last six starts, most recently on soft ground at Beverley. His wide stall seventeen and lower performance figures make the price less inviting in a nineteen-runner field. Canvas has a quieter stable to overcome, but his course record and 11/2 price make him the stronger value play.
VERDICT: Canvas, 2pt win at 11/2, William Hill. Back only at 5/1 or bigger. Fans Favourite at 4/1 is the next best.
