Carlisle wins the meeting comparison through the Class 3 LPD Maiden and a supporting turf card with enough depth to reward selective betting. The stiff finish and good-to-soft ground should place a premium on balance and the ability to sustain a run, particularly in the three sprint handicaps.

The current going is good to soft, good in places, with a GoingStick reading of 6.1 and mostly cloudy weather forecast. There are seven races and 80 active runners after Circle Of Trust was withdrawn from the 17:17 in the final refresh. The declarations and conditions were cross-checked with the Racing Post Carlisle racecard, Racing TV Carlisle racecards and the Racing Post going and non-runner bulletin. Prices and place terms were checked on the live Oddschecker Carlisle markets at 08:13 BST. Late withdrawals can change both.

The wider horse-racing tips hub explains how the daily card fits BetOwl's coverage, while the tips methodology sets out the evidence and price discipline behind each selection. Settled performance is recorded separately in the horse-racing tips results.

Quick race guide

14:12 Fillies novice | 14:42 Six-furlong nursery | 15:12 LPD maiden | 15:47 Five-furlong handicap | 16:17 Six-furlong handicap | 16:47 Extended-mile handicap | 17:17 Seven-furlong handicap

Carlisle 14:12 | Orfilia | 2pt win at 7/2, bet365

ORFILIA shaped better than fourth place on debut at Redcar. She was held up from the widest stall, made ground when the race developed away from her and kept on after drifting left. That experience is valuable in a novice containing six newcomers, while Daniel Tudhope stays aboard and the easier surface should not inconvenience a daughter of Too Darn Hot.

Flower Youmzain is the next best at 10/3 after three respectable efforts, including a closing third at Beverley. Andrew Mount also identified Orfilia as the runner whose Redcar effort could be upgraded. The concern is that a high draw may require an early decision, but 7/2 leaves enough room for that risk.

VERDICT: Orfilia, 2pt win at 7/2, bet365. Back only at 11/4 or bigger. Flower Youmzain at 10/3 is the next best.

Carlisle 14:42 | Social Spirit | 1pt e/w at 9/1, bet365, 3 places

SOCIAL SPIRIT finished strongly for third over five furlongs at Newcastle and now returns to the six-furlong trip that produced a close fifth in better company at Epsom. His mark of 69 is workable on those efforts, and stall three gives Billy Garritty the option to conserve him before asking for one sustained run.

Fast Performer is the next best at 9/4 and is strongly respected on nursery debut for William Haggas. The favourite has less experience and disappointed at odds-on last time, whereas Social Spirit has already competed in deeper nurseries. Three verified places make the 9/1 each-way price the right way to express the value.

VERDICT: Social Spirit, 1pt e/w at 9/1, bet365, 3 places. Back only at 8/1 or bigger. Fast Performer at 9/4 is the next best.

Carlisle 15:12 | Flagbearer | 2pt win at 11/2, William Hill

FLAGBEARER improved from his debut when third in a Class 2 maiden at Hamilton, travelling with the leaders and keeping on over almost this exact trip. William Haggas has been operating at a 25 per cent strike-rate in the current fortnight, and James Doyle takes over. That combination makes the colt the most persuasive of the conventional Flat maidens.

Blue Hercules is the next best at 9/2 after several strong placed efforts in Class 2 and Class 3 company, although he has repeatedly found one too good. Lord Byron brings high-class jumping form but must translate it to the Flat after a 131-day break. Flagbearer offers the cleaner progression angle at 11/2.

VERDICT: Flagbearer, 2pt win at 11/2, William Hill. Back only at 5/1 or bigger. Blue Hercules at 9/2 is the next best.

Carlisle 15:47 | Cotai Starlight | 2pt win at 6/1, William Hill

COTAI STARLIGHT was caught only in the final strides over this course and distance thirteen days ago. She had also won over six furlongs at Ayr in July, so her current mark remains manageable, and a pace to follow from stall nine should help her conserve speed for the climb.

Albegone is the next best at 6/1 after a late-running Musselburgh success, but he carries more weight and stall one could force him to search for room. Cotai Starlight is not prolific and Katie Scott is without a recent winner, yet the fresh course evidence and available 6/1 compensate for those reservations.

VERDICT: Cotai Starlight, 2pt win at 6/1, William Hill. Back only at 11/2 or bigger. Albegone at 6/1 is the next best.

Carlisle 16:17 | Run This Way | 1pt e/w at 17/2, bet365, 3 places

RUN THIS WAY has put together form figures of 11433 and remains narrowly top-rated in the structured assessment. Her two spring wins came over this trip, while the latest Catterick third showed she can still close effectively when the pace is sound. Stall two is useful provided David Nolan can find a clear route.

Donald is the next best at 7/2 after being denied by a short head at Newcastle. He is the more obvious winner, but Run This Way has a deeper body of recent form and is more than twice the price. The recommendation is each-way with three verified places rather than a win-only bet.

VERDICT: Run This Way, 1pt e/w at 17/2, bet365, 3 places. Back only at 8/1 or bigger. Donald at 7/2 is the next best.

Carlisle 16:47 | Hostility | 2pt win at 6/1, William Hill

HOSTILITY has made Carlisle his strongest circuit this summer, winning twice and finishing in the first three on four of his last five visits. He was a close third on soft ground here three weeks ago and returns over the extended mile from the same workable mark, with Daniel Tudhope booked.

Zermatt Star is the next best at 11/4 after first-time cheekpieces inspired a 40/1 Ripon success. Timeform expects her to confirm that improvement, but the penalty and much shorter price demand another career best. Hostility offers the stronger course evidence and better value at 6/1.

VERDICT: Hostility, 2pt win at 6/1, William Hill. Back only at 11/2 or bigger. Zermatt Star at 11/4 is the next best.

Carlisle 17:17 | Von Trotter | 2pt win at 13/2, William Hill

VON TROTTER has found consistency since moving back up in trip, winning at Doncaster before being caught by only a short head at Chepstow. He can race prominently without needing to lead, and his mark of 68 still leaves room if he reproduces those last two efforts on Carlisle's stiff finish.

One Night Thunder is the next best at 4/1 and owns two course-and-distance wins, but his current sequence is less convincing. Monsieur Kodi also merits respect, particularly if the pace collapses. Von Trotter arrives in the clearest form and 13/2 is sufficient compensation for the rise in class.

VERDICT: Von Trotter, 2pt win at 13/2, William Hill. Back only at 6/1 or bigger. One Night Thunder at 4/1 is the next best.

Best bets of the day

Hostility is the NAP on the strength of four top-three Carlisle finishes from his last five visits. Flagbearer is the next best after improving into third in a Class 2 maiden over almost the same trip. Social Spirit and Run This Way supply the each-way value in races with three verified places.
