There is no Pattern, Graded or Listed racing in Britain or Ireland today, but Newton Abbot still earns top billing on merit. Its £25,000 Class 2 two-mile chase is the strongest and most nationally relevant contest on the six available cards, and the racecourse's own preview rightly treats that as the feature. Carlisle ranks second with a Class 3 EBF novice, while Navan is an ordinary summer Flat fixture rather than its recognised November festival. Newton Abbot therefore outranks Carlisle because it has the day's only Class 2 feature, not because it has more races, runners or prize money.

The latest card contains seven races and 34 active runners. The Racing API and At The Races agree on a sound surface, with six non-runners removed from the working card: Iwanttobreakfree, Better Off Alone, Run Away Joe, Ice In The Veins, Mcgregors Charge and Beorma. The Met Office forecast has sunny intervals through the afternoon and only a small rain chance during racing, so I have assessed this as a quick-ground card. Prices were checked on Oddschecker at 09:08 Europe/London.

Newton Abbot 4:42 | NIGHTFLYER | 3pt win at 12/5, BetMGM

NEXT BEST: ST JUST IN TIME

St Just In Time owns the best hurdles form and is the obvious starting point. He was beaten only a nose from this mark at Doncaster in March 2025 and returned from 441 days off with a sound five-length third at Perth. The problem is the price. He still found only one pace when the race became serious there, and an odds-on quote asks us to assume that the extra two and a half furlongs will improve him rather than expose his finishing speed.

I would rather take the 12/5 about Nightflyer. He won a Catterick bumper in January, shaped much better than the bare result when fourth at Warwick and was pitched into the Grade 2 bumper at Aintree. His first hurdle run at Worcester was not a disaster. A stumble disrupted him early, yet he still produced a performance close enough to St Just In Time's latest level to make the market gap look too wide. He receives 4lb, has more scope to improve over hurdles and the longer trip should help a horse who stayed on from the rear in his better bumper efforts.

Wait At The Gate has not matched the principals' figures, while Maria Mes and Morissette need dramatic progress on what they have shown. Nightflyer does have to settle better than he sometimes did in bumpers, but Jonjo O'Neill junior should be able to place him behind a steady pace and ask for one sustained effort.

VERDICT: NIGHTFLYER, 3pt win at 12/5 with BetMGM. Back at 2/1 or bigger. St Just In Time is the likeliest winner but not the value at odds-on.

Newton Abbot 5:12 | PREMIER FANTASY | 2pt win at 3/1, William Hill

NEXT BEST: FLASHY BOY

This staying chase is less straightforward than the prices imply. Knightsbridge won at Warwick and Worcester before a laboured fourth last time, and his Worcester jumping remained scratchy even when successful. A return to three miles and two furlongs can help, but he is 10lb higher than at the start of that sequence and must prove the latest regression was temporary.

Premier Fantasy gets the vote at 3/1. He is still unexposed under Rules, has placed on both visits to Newton Abbot and did enough over this exact course and distance last month to suggest his mark is workable. He made ground before the sixteenth, moved into third four out and was unable to quicken with the first two. That was only his second chase start in Britain, and a 3lb drop gives him a fair chance to reverse the impression if the early gallop is stronger. The Racing Post verdict also identifies his scope for improvement, although the selection here is based on the price and the course evidence rather than that public tip.

Flashy Boy is the danger. He stayed on for third over three miles and three and a half furlongs at Stratford only seven days ago and races from the foot of the weights. His Newton Abbot run two starts ago was poor, but the Stratford effort suggests he is in better order now. Lynsey Larue must put a pulled-up run behind her, while the late withdrawal of Better Off Alone reduces the field to four.

VERDICT: PREMIER FANTASY, 2pt win at 3/1 with William Hill. Back at 5/2 or bigger. Flashy Boy is next best if reproducing last week's improved effort.

Newton Abbot 5:42 | BUXTED REEL | 3pt win at 9/4, PricedUp

NEXT BEST: ASK PETER

There should be enough pace here despite Run Away Joe's withdrawal. Ask Peter often goes forward, Most Wanted has made the running over fences and Linden Lane can race close to the speed. That should suit Buxted Reel, who has been doing his best work from just behind the principals.

His second at Stratford and third at Uttoxeter are the two most reliable recent pieces of hurdle form in the race. He travelled near the pace on both occasions, kept finding and was beaten by horses who simply had more in hand. A Flat run at Redcar since was no more than a pipe-opener over a trip beyond his best, and the official Newton Abbot preview also notes that it should have put him straight. He is down another pound and today's sharp two miles and 167 yards on sound ground looks ideal.

Ask Peter came within a quarter of a length over course and distance in June, but she has been beaten twice here since after trying to force matters. A more patient ride would make her dangerous. Linden Lane also has course form, although his tendency to race keenly leaves him vulnerable at the finish. Estate Planning may improve for a 72-day break, while Most Wanted's recent chase win has not translated into a similarly persuasive hurdles case.

VERDICT: BUXTED REEL, 3pt win at 9/4 with PricedUp. Back at 7/4 or bigger. Ask Peter is next best if ridden with restraint.

Newton Abbot 6:12 | GORE POINT | 3pt win at 11/8, General

NEXT BEST: OBSESSEDWITHYOU

The feature is small but properly competitive. Gower Prince made all the important moves when winning at Market Rasen, Centara is last year's winner and Breaking Cover has Class 1 form in the book. Those positives are reflected in their marks, whereas Gore Point still appears to be improving faster than the handicapper can respond.

He arrives only five days after his fifth consecutive win. The latest was a Class 3 success over this course and distance, where he moved into contention from the eighth, led two out and went clear. He runs from the same published mark of 117 under a 7lb penalty and is effectively still ahead of his reassessment. This is a rise in class, yet his 119 performance figure from Saturday is already close to the recent levels of the exposed top weights, and he has repeatedly shown that the sharp track and quick ground suit him.

The main tactical threat is pressure from Gower Prince or Centara, but Gore Point has no need to lead. He has won from the pack and can let the others establish the rhythm. Obsessedwithyou is the most interesting danger at 7/1. She has won two of four chase starts, ran to 126 when second in a Class 2 at Bangor and returns to fences after two sound hurdle runs. Breaking Cover is reliable enough for place calculations, but his current mark leaves little room for error.

VERDICT: GORE POINT, 3pt win at 11/8, available generally. Back at 5/4 or bigger. Obsessedwithyou is the value danger, but no second official bet is advised in a five-runner race.

Newton Abbot 6:42 | MY GIRL KATIE | 3pt win at 13/8, General

NEXT BEST: JACK THE SAVAGE

There is an obvious risk in backing a mare reverting from fences at a short price, but the handicap position is unusually persuasive. My Girl Katie has won twice over this course and distance in the last six weeks, including a smooth success only five days ago. She travelled at the rear, progressed before the fourteenth and powered away after taking the lead at the last. Because that latest win came over fences, she returns to hurdles from 92 without a penalty.

Her hurdle record is not as strong as her chase form, but this test is about stamina, rhythm and course craft, all of which she has in abundance. A strongly run race would suit, with Jack The Savage, Touchwoodexpress and perhaps Man Oh Man able to ensure there is no crawl. The quick return is a fair objection, yet she was not subjected to a hard finish on Saturday and Christian Williams's team has been operating at a healthy level.

Jack The Savage is next best and a plausible alternative at 11/2. He has won twice over three miles or farther, races from the same mark as when a close fourth at Market Rasen and should get an economical prominent ride. Final Entry is a course-and-distance winner and his 5lb claim helps, although his jumping can become untidy when the pressure rises. The others need either a revival or a substantial improvement.

VERDICT: MY GIRL KATIE, 3pt win at 13/8, available generally. Back at 6/4 or bigger. Jack The Savage is the solid next best without becoming a second official wager.

Newton Abbot 7:12 | IT'S A BREEZE | 3pt win at 5/2, BetMGM and PricedUp

NEXT BEST: THICKTHORN TOM

This is a contest between two rapidly improving course specialists, and I think the market has the wrong one favourite. Thickthorn Tom has won three of his last four and deserves respect, but both recent victories came from a mark of 95. He is now 12lb higher and his jumping became untidy late at Worcester. He may still be improving, though 11/8 leaves little margin for a mistake.

It's A Breeze is also higher in the weights, yet his last two course-and-distance victories were more emphatic. On 13 July he made ground from the rear, led at the last and pulled clear. Six days later he struck the front after three out and opened a decisive advantage. He has risen 15lb, but Paddy Hanlon's 5lb claim offsets a third of that increase and leaves him receiving 1lb from Thickthorn Tom. The return to the same sharp circuit and sound surface is a clear positive.

Lady Kara brings a different profile after three hurdle wins, but her chasing debut ended with an unseat after two significant errors. Quick Sharpener is capable on his Hereford win but comes here after a heavy defeat. In a race where all four have questions, 5/2 about the horse with the strongest recent course-specific figures is attractive.

VERDICT: IT'S A BREEZE, 3pt win at 5/2 with BetMGM or PricedUp. Back at 9/4 or bigger. Thickthorn Tom is the main danger but is short enough after his rise.

Newton Abbot 7:42 | ELLERTON | 3pt win at 7/4, Ladbrokes and Coral

NEXT BEST: DONNIE AZOFF

Beorma's withdrawal reduces the finale to three runners and removes the likely pace angle. Donnie Azoff is the solid one. He won over course and distance in June, finished strongly from off the pace and was a respectable second at Stratford next time. He is, however, asked to concede 14lb to Ellerton, and an odds-on quote assumes the race will be run to expose class rather than turn tactical.

Ellerton's latest chase run can be ignored. He never travelled, made a serious error at the sixth and was pulled up soon afterwards. His hurdles record around Newton Abbot is much more convincing. He won over two miles and one furlong in May, then stayed on for second over two miles and five furlongs a fortnight later. Today's intermediate trip should be close to ideal, he is back on the same mark of 105 and Brendan Powell can keep him within striking distance even if the pace is steady.

King Of The Bronx has a long absence to overcome and has not jumped a hurdle in Britain since winning from 92 at Cork in April 2025. He receives weight but needs to show that the ability remains after disappointing Flat runs. Ellerton has the more recent and more relevant evidence.

VERDICT: ELLERTON, 3pt win at 7/4 with Ladbrokes or Coral. Back at 6/4 or bigger. Donnie Azoff is the safest next best, but the weight concession makes him opposable at odds-on.

Best bets of the day

Gore Point is the NAP because his five-race winning sequence has been built on increasingly authoritative course performances and Saturday's penalty leaves him ahead of his reassessment. My Girl Katie is next best, returning to hurdles without a penalty after another decisive course-and-distance chase win. It's A Breeze is the best handicap value, with the 5lb claim and his Newton Abbot record making 5/2 more appealing than the short price about Thickthorn Tom.
