There is no Pattern or Listed race to hide behind on Wednesday, so Newbury asks a more familiar late-summer question: which horses have shown enough to be trusted, without already advertising every ounce of their ability to the handicapper or the market? The answer is not always the shortest-priced runner. I want horses whose latest effort contains a reason to expect more today, whether that is a better pace, a more suitable trip or a race which should unfold with fewer complications.
Newbury was selected only after all five GB and Irish meetings were fetched through the live Racing API. The leading three were Newbury, Kempton and Bellewstown. Newbury and Kempton have broadly comparable ordinary Class 3 and Class 4 profiles, but Newbury takes the British ordinary-day lead through its stronger national turf-fixture profile and current specialist prominence. Bellewstown's Mullacurry Cup is a respectable local feature, but it is not a Pattern, Graded, Listed or nationally significant race capable of displacing the British default. The official Newbury visitor guide confirms the Schools' Celebration fixture, while the Racing TV card and At The Races meeting page confirm the seven-race programme.
The latest card contains seven races and 70 current runners after Electric Dreams, Magnatura and Fans Favourite were removed. The official going is Good to Firm, with the stalls in the centre apart from the 1m2f start, which uses the inside position. The morning forecast allows for heat through the afternoon and a chance of showers near the start of racing, so the ground and any change in wind should be checked again. Prices below were checked through Oddschecker at 09:12 Europe/London. They are a snapshot, not a promise that the same quote will survive until the off.

16:10 Nursery | 16:45 Maiden, Div I | 17:20 Maiden, Div II | 17:55 Fillies' Maiden | 18:30 Mile Handicap | 19:00 7f Handicap | 19:30 1m2f Handicap
Newbury 16:10 | PRIMAL | 3pt win at 13/8, general
NEXT BEST: MOBADIR
The opener is a proper nursery, with several winners meeting horses who have shaped better than their bare form. Primal belongs firmly in the second group. His fourth of 18 at Goodwood was much better than the result suggests, because he was carried away from his intended line soon after the start, found traffic when the race was beginning in earnest and still closed to within two and a quarter lengths. That was his first handicap and his first try at seven furlongs, so a mark of 73 has not yet had a fair chance to catch him out.
The presence of Global Success, Golden Oasis and El Lambo should prevent this becoming a crawl. That matters because Primal looked strongest when finally allowed to use his stride at Goodwood. Oisin Murphy can let the race develop from stall ten rather than forcing him forward, and Andrew Balding's recent 14 winners from 68 runners offer rather more comfort than the figures attached to several rivals.
Mobadir is the danger. He found plenty to win a six-furlong Nottingham nursery and the extra furlong is not an unreasonable request, but a 4lb rise asks him to prove that narrow success represented a genuine step forward. Regal Tiger has been admirably consistent, while Global Success is very well treated on performance figures, yet the latter is still a maiden after several good chances and must conserve enough energy after racing prominently. The market has found Primal, but the evidence behind the move is strong enough to accept 13/8.
VERDICT: PRIMAL, 3pt win at 13/8. Back at 6/4 or bigger. Mobadir is next best, with Global Success the value place threat rather than a second official bet.
Newbury 16:45 | CRUSHERMAN | 2pt win at 9/2, general
NEXT BEST: SOLAR SWING
The first division of the novice maiden contains seven newcomers, which means confidence must be measured against the price. Crusherman has one piece of evidence the debutants cannot match: he showed enough pace to lead at Newbury on debut, then weakened only late after racing greenly over five furlongs. He was beaten three and a quarter lengths in a nine-runner race and shaped as though this extra furlong and a half would help him settle into a rhythm before his effort is required.
Brian Meehan's colt is by Acclamation and has had more than four months to strengthen. The most persuasive element is tactical rather than purely numerical. With so many inexperienced horses, a clean break and proven willingness to race can be worth more than an attractive sales price or pedigree line. David Egan should be able to use stall two to secure cover just behind the first wave.
Solar Swing is the newcomer to respect. George Boughey's Starman colt has Billy Loughnane booked and the market has been positive, while Flick Of An Eye represents a yard in notably better recent form. Perfect Strike was well fancied at Ascot but faded to seventh, so he needs to show that experience has brought him forward rather than exposed a limitation. At 9/2, Crusherman gives us the correct balance of evidence and uncertainty.
VERDICT: CRUSHERMAN, 2pt win at 9/2. The minimum is 4/1. Solar Swing is next best and the chief threat from the newcomers.
Newbury 17:20 | BATTLEWORTHY | 2pt win at 11/4, general
NEXT BEST: KINGDOM OF KUSH
There is even less racecourse evidence in division two, with Uncle Zello the only runner to have appeared. His Kempton debut, when beaten more than 20 lengths, sets a modest standard and leaves the market, pedigree and connections to do most of the early sorting.
I favour Battleworthy, an Invincible Army colt trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Oisin Murphy. The stall nine draw is not an obvious advantage, but the Newbury straight gives Murphy time to find a lead and the yard's current form is a genuine positive. This is not a case of claiming knowledge which does not exist. It is a judgement that the strongest trainer-jockey signal and the most convincing market support are available at a fair rather than punitive price.
Kingdom Of Kush is the next best. Roger Varian has seven winners from his last 17 runners and this Sioux Nation colt is bred to possess enough pace for six and a half furlongs. Saturn Star and Scythe are other credible newcomers, while the Richard Hannon-trained Darjeel is difficult to dismiss despite the yard's quieter fortnight. Battleworthy is not one for blind odds-on faith, but 11/4 properly compensates for the debut uncertainty.
VERDICT: BATTLEWORTHY, 2pt win at 11/4. Back at 5/2 or bigger. Kingdom Of Kush is next best, narrowly ahead of Saturn Star.
Newbury 17:55 | STARBURSTER | 2pt win at 7/2, Bet365
NEXT BEST: SOMERS ISLES
Somers Isles is the obvious starting point after finishing second on her Newmarket debut, but she raced keenly over seven furlongs and did not threaten the winner. She deserves to improve, yet her price asks us to assume that the drop to six furlongs is entirely positive. I would rather take Starburster at a larger price.
Starburster was slow away and briefly lost position when fourth at Windsor on debut, then kept on to finish within two and three-quarter lengths. Her performance figure was marginally the best achieved by any runner in this field, and Starman's stock often possesses the pace required for this sort of six-furlong maiden. The 79-day absence needs acknowledging, but Richard Spencer has had time to educate her away from the racecourse and Saffie Osborne retains the ride.
Somers Isles remains next best because a cleaner settling rhythm would make her difficult to contain. Bidsta cost 380,000gns and represents a dangerous newcomer, though her price contains a considerable amount of reputation. Royal Message has twice recorded a respectable level without finding much when pressure arrived, while Starburster's debut left the stronger impression. The available 7/2 at Bet365 is the value line.
VERDICT: STARBURSTER, 2pt win at 7/2 with Bet365. Take 3/1 or bigger. Somers Isles is next best, with Bidsta the newcomer most likely to change the shape of the race.
Newbury 18:30 | ZATSGOOD | 2pt win at 13/2, general
NEXT BEST: ABUNDANT
This straight-mile handicap is the strongest betting race on the card. There should be enough pace from Best Rate, Home Hero, Abundant and possibly Island Bear to ensure that tactical speed matters, while the long straight gives closers time to organise themselves. Zatsgood arrives after consecutive seconds and looks ready to convert consistency into a win.
His latest effort at Newbury deserves upgrading. He raced from the highest mark of his career, travelled as though the mile suited and was beaten only narrowly after being committed. The handicapper has left him on 82, Billy Loughnane keeps the partnership intact and stall one gives them the option of tracking the pace without covering unnecessary ground. The application of cheekpieces and a tongue tie is no longer an experiment, and his recent performance and speed figures place him close to the best in this field.
Abundant is next best. He has been running with credit in deeper handicaps and his Goodwood fifth came after he was held up before making late ground. Accademia seeks a hat-trick and has earned respect, but her 6lb rise demands another career best. Best Rate is very well handicapped if bouncing back, although his Ripon run was too flat to accept without a price. Zatsgood is not bombproof, but 13/2 is too large for a horse with fewer questions than most.
VERDICT: ZATSGOOD, 2pt win at 13/2. The bet stands at 11/2 or bigger. Abundant is next best, with Best Rate the dangerous rebound candidate.
Newbury 19:00 | LION OF MALI | 3pt win at 9/4, general
NEXT BEST: BOLD SHOUT
Lion Of Mali has done almost everything asked of him this season. He won at Leicester and Sandown, then finished second twice at Newmarket, latterly producing a powerful late run behind a horse who enjoyed the better track position. He has now won or finished second in five of his six starts this year, and his mark has moved only from 67 to 74 across that sequence.
The small field is the one possible complication because Lion Of Mali is most effective when allowed to build momentum from behind. Bold Shout and Show Me Gold should provide a workable pace, however, and David Egan can keep closer order from stall one without changing the gelding's natural rhythm. The 7f trip and fast ground are proven, while James Fanshawe's four recent winners from 19 runners add confidence.
Bold Shout is next best after winning a maiden over this trip at Salisbury. He receives weight and could progress sharply now handicapping, but a mark of 70 is not obviously lenient on the figure he achieved. Artanis has back-class but returns after 168 days, and Brisk Symphony needs first-time cheekpieces to reverse a subdued summer. Lion Of Mali's reliability, improving profile and fair 9/4 make him the day's strongest bet.
VERDICT: LION OF MALI, 3pt win at 9/4. He remains a bet at 2/1 or bigger. Bold Shout is next best, with the selection's finishing strength expected to prove decisive.
Newbury 19:30 | EDWIN HUBBLE | 2pt win at 7/2, general
NEXT BEST: EMPIRICAL
The finale contains two obvious improvers in Empirical and Edwin Hubble, but the market has created a clear decision. Empirical seeks a hat-trick and did the job cleanly last time, yet he is 4lb higher and drawn nine. Edwin Hubble is the same official rating, arrives from a steadily run Sandown win and has repeatedly produced stronger speed figures than the favourite.
His Ascot fifth over a mile and a half is better than the bare finishing position because he was held in the pack and could not quicken with the leaders. Dropped to ten furlongs at Sandown, he travelled behind the pace and found enough when asked, suggesting this trip is his present optimum. Stall one and Oisin Murphy should allow him to sit behind Island Bear or Guesstimate before moving into the race.
Empirical is next best and could simply be ahead of the handicapper, but 7/4 makes less appeal than 7/2 about a rival with comparable improvement and stronger clock evidence. Guesstimate is consistent and could control the pace if left alone, while Magical Merlot has run well without winning and again looks more place prospect than obvious scorer.
VERDICT: EDWIN HUBBLE, 2pt win at 7/2. Back at 3/1 or bigger. Empirical is next best, with Guesstimate the tactical danger.
Best bets of the day
Lion Of Mali is the NAP because his 2026 record combines reliability with an unchanged upward trajectory, and the small-field pace should still be sufficient for his late run. Edwin Hubble is the next best at a price which underrates his speed figures relative to Empirical. Zatsgood is the best handicap value, with consecutive seconds, a workable mark and the right straight-mile setup at 13/2.
