Ebor day at York

The Ebor Festival closes with the strongest British or Irish card this Saturday. York offers seven races, a Group 1, a Group 3, a Listed juvenile sprint and three major handicaps headed by the Ebor itself. The card is deep enough to punish lazy short-price betting, so this Daily Dossier is built around price, tactical position and the ability to sustain a run through York's long straight.

At the final publication check, the live York grids showed Good to Soft, Good in places. The Met Office forecast was brighter than it looked earlier in the morning, with sunny intervals, temperatures rising towards 19C and very little rain expected during racing. Stalls are in the centre over five and six furlongs and on the inside for the remaining races. None of the seven selections was a non-runner at the final check.

Prices below were checked at 12:05 Europe/London on 22 August 2026. Odds and place concessions can change quickly, and drying ground could alter the balance of later races. Recheck the live market before betting, respect every stated price limit and remember that a withdrawal can trigger a Rule 4 deduction.

York 1.50 | JONQUIL | 1pt e/w at 17/2, bet365 - 4 places

NEXT BEST: DAMYSUS

This is a better betting race than the shape of the market suggests. Damysus owns the strongest single piece of recent York form after chasing home Item here last month, form strengthened when that rival won the Juddmonte International. The cheekpieces and drop in trip may sharpen him, but his price is no giveaway in a race that could become tactical. Persica is tough and reliable, although his Newbury win came after getting an ideal target to aim at, while Geryon has been attracting support after a solid Goodwood effort.

JONQUIL is the value. He was slowly away at Goodwood, had to make his challenge from an unpromising position and still finished better than anything. Stall three gives Colin Keane the option to hold a much handier pitch, and the slight ease underfoot should be no inconvenience. His Goodwood finish was the clearest sign that he is coming back to himself, and this extended mile is a fair test of the balance between his speed and stamina.

The market has shortened him from the earlier 10/1, but bet365's extra fourth place makes 17/2 more useful than 9/1 for three places elsewhere. The strongest objection is that another slow start would leave him vulnerable if the leaders control the fractions. That risk is reflected in an each-way recommendation rather than a win-only bet.

VERDICT: JONQUIL, 1pt e/w at 17/2 with bet365 - 4 places. Back at 8/1 or bigger. DAMYSUS is the next best and the horse to beat on York form.

York 2.25 | MYTHICAL BAY | 1pt e/w at 7/1, Unibet or Betway - 5 places

NEXT BEST: INFRAAD

Limestone brings Group-race substance after completing a hat-trick in the Queen's Vase, but he must concede at least 8lb to every rival after a below-par Grand Prix de Paris run. Infraad is progressive, straightforward and battled well at Goodwood, though a short price leaves little margin in a seventeen-runner handicap. This is the kind of race where unexposed stamina and a low racing weight can matter more than the most obvious piece of form.

MYTHICAL BAY has the right shape. He has won three of his last five starts, arrives after two decisive victories and races from stall three off 8st 10lb. His finishing strength at a mile and a half strongly suggests the longer Melrose trip can produce another step forward. The 49-day break looks deliberate rather than worrying, and Oisin Murphy should be able to save ground before asking him to build momentum into the straight.

The price moved out to 7/1 during the final check. That crosses the fixed staking boundary, so the earlier 2pt win recommendation becomes 1pt each way. Unibet and Betway were both offering five places at that price. Infraad is next best because he is well drawn, race-fit and uncomplicated, but Mythical Bay offers the better balance of upside, weight and price.

VERDICT: MYTHICAL BAY, 1pt e/w at 7/1 with Unibet or Betway - 5 places. Do not chase below 5/1. INFRAAD is the next best.

York 3.00 | TEN BOB TONY | 2pt win at 4/1, General

NEXT BEST: ZAVATERI

Notable Speech is the class horse on official ratings, but the drop from a mile to seven furlongs is not automatically positive. His Queen Anne sixth showed that he is not bombproof, and a sharp change of tempo could ask a different question from the one he normally answers. Lake Forest and Paborus bring high-level form, while Zavateri returns to a trip that should suit after a luckless Sussex Stakes fifth.

TEN BOB TONY has been transformed this season. He followed his Queen Anne success by beating Lake Forest at Goodwood, then ran better than fourth place implies when the race did not quite fall his way. Seven furlongs is now demonstrably his optimum, some ease in the ground is helpful and stall eight places him among enough pace to avoid being isolated. He can race prominently without needing the lead, which is valuable in a large Group 1 field.

The market shortened him from a bigger Friday price, but 4/1 remains fair against a favourite with a tactical question to answer. The counterargument is that Notable Speech's best mile form is superior on raw class and he could simply outpace the field if settling into the shorter trip. At the prices, however, Ten Bob Tony is the more appealing bet. Zavateri is next best because the return to seven furlongs can help him, although he must prove himself against older horses.

VERDICT: TEN BOB TONY, 2pt win at 4/1, General. Back at 3/1 or bigger. ZAVATERI is the next best.

York 3.35 | KLASSLEADER | 1pt e/w at 7/1, bet365 - 6 places

NEXT BEST: CIRCUS OF ROME

The Ebor is a proper test of stamina, position and luck. Love Me Tender could be extremely well treated for Willie Mullins, but a short price is severe for a horse returning after 299 days and making his British debut in a race this competitive. Emit has the right connections and Ryan Moore, though repeated defeats from comparable marks make him cramped. Hopewell Rock, Square Necker and Daiquiri Bay all have plausible progressive profiles.

KLASSLEADER has the strongest blend of York form, stamina and latent improvement. He won here in May despite a steady gallop working against his patient style, then found the ground too lively at Haydock. Conditions are more suitable today, Tom Marquand is an excellent booking and 8st 12lb leaves him in a productive weight range. The likely strong pace should allow him to settle before using his stamina in the long straight.

The best headline price was 15/2 with a single permitted firm offering five places. Bet365's 7/1 with six places is the stronger each-way proposition and sits within half a point of that top price. Circus Of Rome is the speculative next best at a much bigger price. His Goodwood run came in a steadily run race that offered a hold-up horse little chance, and an Ebor gallop could show him in a better light.

VERDICT: KLASSLEADER, 1pt e/w at 7/1 with bet365 - 6 places. Do not chase below 7/1. CIRCUS OF ROME is the next best.

York 4.10 | EVENING SAIGON | 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, General - 5 places

NEXT BEST: FAR ABOVE DREAM

Dance In The Storm is progressive but short for a twenty-runner sprint after an uneven campaign. Air Force One has obvious York credentials, yet turns out only three days after his latest win and now faces a much deeper field. Coul Angel, Stratusnine and Red Spells Danger add further pace and recent form, so this should be run honestly from an early stage.

EVENING SAIGON is the bet at 12/1. He travelled with purpose when winning the Stewards' Cup last time, is drawn four with James Doyle able to use his early speed, and has already shown he handles both six furlongs and an easy surface. A lesser previous run explains the price, but his best efforts suggest a mark of 100 is workable when he gets into a rhythm. His Goodwood success came in a field of 27, so today's traffic should not be alien to him.

The concern is a 4lb rise and the possibility that the drying surface places more emphasis on raw pace. Even so, three permitted firms were showing 12/1, making the price general, with five places widely available. Far Above Dream is next best. His major-handicap form is stronger than most of these bring, although two lesser efforts before Goodwood stop him being the primary recommendation.

VERDICT: EVENING SAIGON, 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, General - 5 places. Back at 10/1 or bigger. FAR ABOVE DREAM is the next best.

York 4.45 | ADONIUS | 3pt win at 11/5, Betway

NEXT BEST: EL FLORIDITA

ADONIUS has the most convincing juvenile sprint form and is the day's clearest win bet. Three victories were followed by a strong second in the Molecomb, where he chased home a colt good enough to contest the Nunthorpe. He has already won on soft ground, so any remaining ease is not a concern, and his natural pace should be well suited to York's five furlongs.

Rebecca Menzies has kept him fresh and stall eight gives Kaiya Fraser options in a race with speed nearby. Dubai Champion is improving but must find plenty on the ratings, while Dorigo is still a maiden. Dance A Jig has scope to improve again, but Adonius owns the cleanest combination of achieved form, pace and ground evidence.

Betway's 11/5 was the best permitted sportsbook quote at the final check. That price sits inside the top staking band and supports the full 3pt win recommendation. The normal juvenile caveat remains: these are lightly raced horses and one rival may improve sharply. El Floridita is the next best at a large price because his form figures conceal a solid second two starts ago and he has enough natural speed to benefit if the principals go too hard.

VERDICT: ADONIUS, 3pt win at 11/5 with Betway. Do not chase below 7/4. He is the NAP. EL FLORIDITA is the next best.

York 5.20 | ERZINDJAN | 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, General - 5 places

NEXT BEST: RAAMMEE

Raammee is thriving and Roger Varian's recent form strengthens his claim, but a short price is demanding in a twenty-one-runner handicap after six weeks off. Diego El Queso has solid form but a wide draw complicates his route into the race, while Accredit is lightly raced enough to attract support. This finale demands a runner that can conserve energy and obtain cover before the long drive home.

ERZINDJAN is the value at 11/1. He won two starts ago, is proven at the trip and on the ground, and his peak performance figure is the best in this field. The 66-day absence is the principal risk, but Ryan Moore taking the ride suggests he is expected to be ready. Stall eleven is workable provided he finds cover rather than racing wide through the early stages.

The market was offering 11/1 with enough permitted firms to call the price general, and five places were broadly available. Raammee remains the next best and the most likely winner on pure recent form, but Erzindjan is the more attractive bet at several times the price. This is exactly the kind of late-card handicap in which the difference between the likeliest winner and the best wager matters.

VERDICT: ERZINDJAN, 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, General - 5 places. Back at 9/1 or bigger. RAAMMEE is the next best.

Best bets of the day

The NAP is Adonius. His Molecomb second is the cleanest piece of relevant sprint form on the card, his ability on easier ground is established and 11/5 still permits the full 3pt win stake.

The next best is Ten Bob Tony. He is a genuine seven-furlong Group 1 horse now and should get the searching gallop he needs. Notable Speech may be the classier miler, but 4/1 about the specialist is the better bet.

The best handicap bet is Klassleader. He combines York form, a suitable weight, the right pace setup and enough ground ease. Bet365's six-place concession makes 7/1 a better each-way bet than taking a marginally bigger price for only five places.
