There are grander stages than Ripon on a September Tuesday, but few horses carry a map of their favourite circuit as thoroughly as Garden Oasis. Seven course-and-distance wins do not make an eighth inevitable. They do mean that a return to a workable mark, backed by a sequence of 2-3-3, deserves more respect than the market is granting.

Ripon gets the nod as the day's principal meeting because its seven-race turf programme contains three competitive Class 4 contests and the strongest full-card betting depth among Britain's afternoon options. Wolverhampton supplies a Class 3 novice but a lower-grade supporting card, while Gowran Park's programme contains no Pattern or Listed race. Next best: Yermanthere at 13/2

His Finest Hour has not won yet, but four places from five starts give him the most dependable current profile in the opener. His seconds at Wetherby and Carlisle came over similar trips, and the latest Carlisle third showed he could cope with an easier surface without travelling as smoothly as he can. The handicap mark of 71 asks a question rather than presenting a gift, yet this is an apprentice race in which reliability counts. Stall three should allow him to find cover and Jake Dickson's 5lb claim offsets part of the burden. Yermanthere is the danger after a productive summer, although his latest sixth makes the favourite's steadier sequence preferable. Soft ground and a possible tactical race are the risks. At 13/8, the selection is short enough that he must reproduce his best rather than merely run another respectable race. His ability to hold a position and finish his races still makes that price acceptable, but not one to chase if it contracts.

Next best: Empress Princess at 10/11

Empress Princess deserves to be favourite after finishing second on debut, but odds-on terms make improvement look compulsory. American Psycho has already been through three races and his fourth at Thirsk last time was a step back towards the promise of his Beverley second. That experience is particularly useful over Ripon's sharp five furlongs. He knows how to race among horses and carries a published rating of 74, while the newcomers must prove they can handle soft ground and the track's undulations at the first attempt. The favourite may possess the greater ceiling, but 6/1 offers the better balance between evidence and uncertainty. The danger is straightforward: American Psycho has had chances and must find a little more speed. This is a value bet against a short favourite, not a declaration that the market has the pair in the wrong order.

Next best: Star People at 7/4

Lexington Boom has improved with every run, twice finishing second before winning at Catterick. She travelled prominently there and saw out the five furlongs strongly, a useful combination for this more demanding surface. Her nursery mark of 72 gives her room against the top pair without asking for a dramatic leap. Star People is the main threat. Three placed efforts from his last four starts make him consistent, but he has yet to win and now meets a filly whose progress has already taken her past that barrier. Lady Dublin has two victories on the page, although her latest eighth raises a more immediate form question. Soft ground is not fully proven for the selection, and a busy early contest could test her finishing effort. Even so, 5/2 fairly rewards the chance that her Catterick win was another step forward rather than her ceiling.

Ripon 15:40 | Kind Touch | 2pt win at 13/2, Ladbrokes

Next best: Yes I'm Mali at 5/4

Kind Touch won over this course and distance on debut, then confirmed that soft ground was no obstacle when second at Pontefract. Her York seventh in a competitive handicap was perfectly respectable, and Chester's turns did not play to her strengths on the latest start. A return to Ripon's straight six furlongs is therefore more than a sentimental course angle. She is lightly raced, has been freshened for 73 days and starts from a mark of 80 which does not look excessive beside her York run. Yes I'm Mali is the obvious threat after his close Thirsk second, but his short price compresses the room for another near miss. Kind Touch still needs to settle and prove that the absence has sharpened rather than dulled her. At 13/2, the price still compensates for that uncertainty and is large enough to retain the value argument, but it now belongs in the win band.

Next best: Almarada Prince at 5/2

Here Forever won over this course and distance last autumn, showing a willing attitude after travelling behind the leaders. She has had only five starts, so her present mark of 78 is less fixed than those of most rivals in a thoroughly exposed division. Her Ayr fifth in July was better than the bare result. She was held up, made progress and was not beaten far in a race that favoured a handier position. A 57-day break can help, while the return to soft ground and a familiar straight course gives her a more suitable examination. Almarada Prince sets a sound standard after his recent second and is rightly respected. The concern is that Here Forever's latest two runs have not advanced her as expected, and she cannot afford to be detached. The 8/1 offer with three places gives enough compensation for that tactical risk.

Ripon 16:48 | Garden Oasis | 2pt win at 9/2, General

Next best: Catton Lady at 15/2

Garden Oasis has won seven times over Ripon's mile, a record that matters because the round course demands balance and an efficient position into the bend. His last three runs have produced a second and two thirds, so the course specialist arrives in form rather than relying on old memories. He is back on a mark of 70, the first time he has reached that figure since winning here in 2024. The latest Beverley second showed he still has the resolution for a sustained finish, and soft ground should not inconvenience a gelding with form under testing conditions. Donna Nook is dangerous from the same rating, while Catton Lady may still be improving after her Redcar success. Thirteen runners bring traffic risk and Garden Oasis must avoid being trapped wide or too far back. At 9/2, his course record, present form and workable mark combine into the strongest bet on the card. He is the NAP. Catton Lady also merits a separate each-way bet at 15/2 with four places: she is drawn to race close enough, arrives after winning at Ayr and remains open to progress at a mile.

Next best: Si White at 5/4

Zimmerman is well established over two miles and has placed at Ripon from higher marks than today's 61. His spring seconds at Catterick and Ripon show that much of his staying ability remains, while the soft ground should turn this into the sort of sustained test he handles. The latest sixth at Pontefract was disappointing, but he raced prominently in a contest that developed differently and has since been given 85 days to recover. Si White is shorter after winning on the all-weather in July, yet still has to prove the same authority over two miles on soft turf. Regally Blonde arrives after a win but steps back up markedly in trip. Fitness after the break is the clear weakness in Zimmerman's case. At 7/2, the market leaves enough room for that doubt because his course, distance and ground record is better established than the favourite's.

Lexington Boom, the next best at 5/2, has progressed on every start and brings a recent five-furlong victory into a nursery that rewards straightforward racecraft.

The each-way value is less obvious but still genuine. Here Forever, 1pt e/w at 8/1, General, 3 places, returns to a winning course and distance and remains lightly raced enough to improve past her present mark. Catton Lady, 1pt e/w at 15/2, Betfred, 4 places, arrives after an Ayr success, can race handily around the bend and remains capable of improving over this mile.
