NEXT BEST: Rhythm Of My Heart at 4/1

Goodwood's opening mile is an unusually deep restricted novice, and the bend arrives quickly enough to punish a filly who races too freely. Rhythm Of My Heart brings the best single performance figure after finishing strongly at Kempton, but she wandered under pressure and the Menuisier yard is quiet. Majestic Flame has already handled this course and stayed on from an unpromising position in a stronger Class 2 at the Glorious meeting. Lily Pink is preferred because her Newmarket second was achieved after a slow start and she was only edged out late. The extra experience, a midfield draw and the likelihood of a stronger gallop make 9/4 a fair working price, though this remains a race where several can improve sharply.

NEXT BEST: Darkness at 14/1

The day's first major handicap revolves around whether Forty Years On can keep climbing after four wins from five starts. Her Newbury success came in a 15-runner race, she produced the best finishing effort despite being held up and an 8lb rise still leaves room in the figures. Ghost Mode is a proper danger after winning over this course and distance at the Glorious meeting, while Addison Grey also arrives from a Class 2 success. The value addition is Darkness, last year's winner from a pound higher and recently caught too far back in the Golden Mile. At 14/1 with four places, his course record and reduced mark justify a separate each-way bet rather than a token mention.

NEXT BEST: High Degree at 2/1

First-time cheekpieces unlocked High Degree and Too Soon on their latest starts, and the market has priced that improvement as permanent. High Degree is reliable but steps up two furlongs under top weight. Too Soon is 6lb higher than for his Epsom win and returns from 84 days off. Tony Montana was fourth of 17 here at the Glorious meeting after being held up and finishing strongly over ten furlongs. That run, his earlier Curragh second from this mark and the inside draw all point towards twelve furlongs being a positive rather than an experiment. 9/2 offers enough compensation for a horse who needs delivering late around a track where timing matters.

NEXT BEST: Boiling Point at 5/1

The Celebration Mile asks whether the three-year-old Zavateri can turn high-class juvenile form into a first senior Pattern success. He has run to 119 and 120 on his two latest starts, receives 6lb from the older horses and drops from the Sussex Stakes and City of York into a Group 2 that lacks a peak Group 1 performer. The seven-day turnaround is the clear objection. Boiling Point is the safer course specialist after six consecutive top-four finishes, while Seagulls Eleven has already won at Listed and Group 3 level this season. Even so, Zavateri's weight-for-age advantage and 117 official rating make 7/4 acceptable, provided he walks out of York in the same physical order.

Goodwood 15:45 | Tropical Sands | 2pt win at 10/3, PricedUp

NEXT BEST: Chimes Of Thunder at 11/2

A tightly priced fillies' maiden is no place for false certainty. Tropical Sands has improved with each start, learned to settle better and was caught only late over ten furlongs at Haydock. The return to a turning track and her rail draw should allow Clifford Lee to save ground before committing. Evening Call can improve from a three-runner Newmarket debut, while the unraced Queen Of Scotland represents a yard that can ready one first time. Chimes Of Thunder supplies the solid alternative on an official 75, though five runs without winning tell their own story. Tropical Sands at 10/3 is a form selection with upside, not a bet based purely on market position.

NEXT BEST: Arcturus Flame at 7/2

The staying handicap has an obvious progressive pair in Zachary Hickes and Arcturus Flame, who were separated by only a neck at Yarmouth. Both move from Class 5 company into a more demanding race and are priced accordingly. Educator has won his last two, both times finding most when pressure arrived, and now moves up from 1m4f to 1m6f from the bottom of the weights. The bare performance figures say he must improve, but the way he finished at Newmarket and Yarmouth suggests the longer trip can provide that step. 11/1 with four places at Unibet is within one point of the best win price and is the right each-way compromise.

Goodwood 16:55 | Toca Madera | 2pt win at 10/3, General

NEXT BEST: Naana's Sparkle at 9/2

This five-furlong handicap is full of runners who can be forgiven their latest effort. Toca Madera was well beaten over six furlongs at York last Saturday, but three days earlier he had finished third of 21 there and his previous Goodwood runs read fourth and fifth in far bigger Class 2 fields. The return to five furlongs, stall four and a mark eased another pound make 10/3 defensible. Naana's Sparkle was a close second over this course and distance in July and is the principal danger, while Dream Composer is weighted to get involved after a good fourth at Windsor. The selection is not bombproof, but his best recent Goodwood form is the strongest evidence in the field.
