Cork is the clear centre of the British and Irish programme because the €50,000 Navigation Stakes is the day's only Listed race. The feature asks whether exposed Group-race form can withstand a progressive handicapper, while the supporting card moves from sharp juvenile sprints to two deep handicaps where pace and traffic will decide as much as raw ability.

The official going is yielding to soft and rain remains part of the race-day picture. NEXT BEST: Sapphire Sun

Bold Commander has not won in five attempts, but that bald statistic disguises a colt who has repeatedly operated at a higher level than most of these. He was second at Bellewstown after being hampered leaving the stalls, and his three subsequent fifths came in races where he either met better opposition or did not finish as strongly as promised. A current mark of 78 sets the standard, and the return to five furlongs on yielding-to-soft ground gives him a chance to use his speed without being asked to stretch it over six or seven.

The objection is the price and the suspicion that he has had enough chances. Sapphire Sun is the alternative at 3/1 after two educational runs, while newcomer Sonny Hayes commands respect from the market. Even so, Bold Commander has the clearest body of evidence and should be able to sit close to the pace from stall four. This is a case where reliability of known form outweighs the seductive possibility of a debutant being anything.

NEXT BEST: Howlin Wolf

Pink Venom made a decisive nursery breakthrough at Fairyhouse eight days ago, travelling from the rear before taking command inside the final 150 yards. That was not a soft lead or a tactical gift. She had already finished third in two maidens and looked as though a truly run six furlongs would bring out more. A 9lb higher mark demands improvement, but the Birdcatcher conditions compress the weights and her finishing strength is valuable on rain-softened ground.

Howlin Wolf is a serious danger at 9/2. He won at the Curragh and has since been second twice at Navan, so he brings the more established handicap profile. Fine Line's huge Curragh effort two starts ago also reads well, although she ran on heavy ground only two days ago. Pink Venom gets the vote because she is still learning, has proved she can pass horses late and arrives with less tactical baggage than several exposed rivals.

NEXT BEST: Motta Alta

By The Lake returned from a long absence with a nose second at Navan, having been slowly away and then forced to make her challenge from the rear. That effort is easy to upgrade, particularly as she had won twice at five furlongs last season and was racing over six for only the second time. She remains on the same mark of 79 and Colin Keane keeps the ride, so there is a plausible route to improvement if she breaks on terms.

Motta Alta is the next best at 11/2. Her win at Limerick came on soft ground and consecutive thirds at Galway and Punchestown confirm that she remains in form, although stall nine is not ideal if the field edges towards the centre. Forza Magico is another progressive filly after winning a maiden, but she now meets seasoned handicappers. By The Lake has a stronger piece of current handicap evidence and the market has not overreacted to it.

NEXT BEST: El Fontenaro

Brains has not won for some time, yet his last two thirds are exactly the sort of current evidence required in a low-grade twenty-runner sprint. He missed the break at Laytown before finishing only a length away, then stayed on into third at Listowel seven days ago. Dropping from seven furlongs to six is the question, but a contested pace should allow Sam Coen to conserve him behind the speed before asking for one run. Five verified places at 7/1 make the each-way shape attractive.

El Fontenaro is the strongest alternative at 9/2 after a sequence of two seconds and a course-and-distance win. She is 4lb higher and returns from 67 days off, but stall two offers a clean opportunity to hold a prominent position. Brains is preferred at the prices because his recent efforts came from less obliging circumstances and the wide-open nature of the race rewards a runner who keeps finding under pressure.

NEXT BEST: Shaihaan

Summer Is Tomorrow has improved markedly since a visor was fitted. He went close twice before winning decisively at Gowran, then finished fourth of twenty-two in a valuable Curragh handicap from a mark of 102. That latest run showed he could cope with a searching pace and a crowded field, and this return to level weights is more favourable than it first appears. He should sit close enough to Action to get the first opportunity when that likely leader begins to tire.

Shaihaan is the next best at 11/2. His third in the Gallinule remains one of the strongest single pieces of form, and dropping from the Irish Derby and a Goodwood Group 3 gives him every chance to revive. Manton Bay is also worth a separate each-way investment at 17/2. He did not enjoy the cleanest passage when fifth behind Summer Is Tomorrow at the Curragh and his earlier second in the Irish Cambridgeshire shows that he can outrun this price. Summer Is Tomorrow is the main selection because his improvement is current, repeatable and well suited to this ten-furlong test.

Cork 16:25 | Cross Of Stars | 2pt win at 6/1, General

NEXT BEST: Golden Ring

Golden Ring sets a fair standard after improving from seventh on debut to third over seven furlongs here, but 2/1 asks the market leader to progress again from a wide draw. Cross Of Stars made a quieter debut at Punchestown, held up before keeping on into sixth without being knocked about. The daughter of Baaeed should be better suited by a mile, and Joseph Murphy's filly has enough pedigree and racecourse education to bridge the gap at a much more forgiving price.

The newcomers make this a race in which certainty is impossible. Duchessofaquitaine, a Sea The Stars full-sister to The Lion In Winter, represents an in-form Paddy Twomey yard, while Aidan O'Brien runs several well-bred fillies. Leap Of Light is a confirmed non-runner, leaving fifteen. Cross Of Stars is the value play at 6/1 because she has already learned something in public and shaped as though this extra furlong would matter.

NEXT BEST: Victory Tip

Hellorhighwater can be forgiven one poor Curragh run. Before it she had won a soft-ground Cork maiden and a Limerick handicap, both over a mile, and her patient style should be suited by a race containing several runners who prefer to be handy. She is only 1lb below her last winning mark and the return to yielding-to-soft ground is a material positive rather than a decorative form note.

Victory Tip is the next best at 10/1. His Royal Ascot run came in a much deeper race, and the earlier Curragh win and Naas second show that this is his level. Daler and Karrygrant are consistent enough to matter, but both are shorter than their overall strike rates warrant. Hellorhighwater offers the better balance between proven conditions, attainable mark and price.

Cork 17:25 | Cause I Like You | 2pt win at 5/1, Bet365 and PricedUp

NEXT BEST: Medieval Night

Cause I Like You has finished second on three of her last five starts and won the other race in that sequence that unfolded cleanly. She came from the rear to fill the same position over this course and distance in August, then repeated the effort on yielding-to-soft ground at Gowran ten days ago. Stall eighteen is awkward, but her hold-up style makes it less damaging than it would be for a habitual front-runner.

Medieval Night is the next best at 5/1 after finishing second and third in two of her last three starts. She has the advantage of stall one, although that can become a trap if the inside closes in an eighteen-runner field. Cisterna and Monocle Rocket have fragments of form that bring them into the argument, but Cause I Like You is the runner with the clearest recent finishing effort and the strongest evidence under today's conditions.

Best bets of the day

Pink Venom at 13/8 is the NAP because her Fairyhouse win was achieved with a strong late move and she remains open to more progress at six furlongs. Summer Is Tomorrow at 3/1 is the next best after proving in a large Curragh field that the visor has produced a genuine advance. Brains has the profile for a strongly run sprint, while Manton Bay's Irish Cambridgeshire second and troubled Curragh passage give him a separate value chance in the Listed race.
