Nottingham leads today's British racing with the Class 2 Future Stayers novice and a substantial Class 4 supporting card. The most attractive wager sits away from that feature: Tamzan has been progressing at a mile, and her recent finishing efforts make the available price worth taking. The later ten-furlong handicaps offer worthwhile larger-priced interest for distinct form reasons.

The official programme contains eight races from 13:29 to 17:05. The morning racecard reports good, good to firm in places, with a GoingStick reading of 6.5. The Met Office forecast includes rain, so do not assume that this going description will survive unchanged until the first race. Prices and the 75 active runners were checked in the live sportsbook grids at 08:10 BST. Reassess after withdrawals or a material change in ground.

Nottingham 13:29 | Californian Angel | 2pt win at 4/1, General

Californian Angel at 4/1 is the more appealing bet than the shorter-priced, less-tested fillies. Her Nottingham debut third came over this course and distance on good ground. The latest Haydock second was on heavy, with a squeeze for room before she stayed on behind the winner. Those two performances give David Probert a workable standard and some flexibility if the forecast rain reaches the track.

The intervening Newmarket sixth is the objection. She has not put together an unbroken sequence of progress, and a rival could improve past her. Still, the price gives room for that uncertainty. I would rather pay for ability already shown on turf than assume a newcomer or an all-weather debutant will reproduce the market's expectations immediately.

Castlerock Girl at 6/5 is the next best after a promising Southwell second. She may know enough to take another step forward, but this is her first turf run. Venetian Storm and Spell Catcher have interesting pedigrees; neither has a performance to compare. Californian Angel's course experience and stronger ground evidence make the larger price worth taking, without pretending that the favourite lacks potential.

VERDICT: Californian Angel, 2pt win at 4/1, General. Minimum price 7/2. The next best is Castlerock Girl at 6/5, tracked separately.

Nottingham 13:59 | Nowshesdancing | 2pt win at 13/2, General

Nowshesdancing has been competitive enough around twelve furlongs to make 13/2 look generous. She went close at Newbury in July from 75 and was a respectable fourth at Yarmouth last month from today's 76. That is a recent, identifiable level rather than a revival argument based on an old winning mark.

The extra two furlongs are the question. A strong late effort can suggest stamina without proving it, and her earlier keenness means Kaiya Fraser needs to keep the first half of the race economical. I am backing the price against that risk, not calling her a demonstrated fourteen-furlong specialist. If the rain produces markedly softer ground, the stamina examination becomes harder and this view needs refreshing.

Hello Friend at 10/3 is the strongest alternative. Her Newmarket second at this trip was a near-miss, and the subsequent shorter-distance fifth does not erase it. Reem Rak also has proper staying form, while Tabasko brings a Lingfield win. Palomezcal is the intriguing handicap newcomer, but her qualifying margins require a much larger improvement than the selection needs. This is a win bet on competitive current ability at a fair price.

VERDICT: Nowshesdancing, 2pt win at 13/2, General. Minimum price 6/1. The next best is Hello Friend at 10/3, tracked separately.

Nottingham 14:29 | Gainful | 3pt win at 11/8, General

The five-runner feature offers a clear contrast between performance and pedigree. Gainful has already finished third in a Newmarket mile novice on good ground. She receives 5lb from each of the four colts and has Rossa Ryan to put that experience to use. At 11/8, those are practical advantages worth backing.

Her debut was not a spectacular late burst: she led, was passed and kept on behind the first two. The case is that she can improve from a useful starting point, with less race-day uncertainty than the newcomers. It is not that the opposition has no ability. A small field can also turn tactical, so Ryan should not needlessly make the race a sprint for horses whose speed has not been exposed.

Top Scholar at 11/4 is the next best. William Haggas introduces a Frankel colt out of Diploma, and the mile is a credible starting point. Prince Of Petra also warrants respect for Roger Varian. Their pedigrees explain the prices but cannot establish readiness. Caldo and Hoshi have experience without comparable finishing evidence. Gainful has the strongest demonstrated platform, while the newcomers remain the honest counterargument.

VERDICT: Gainful, 3pt win at 11/8, General. Minimum price 5/4. The next best is Top Scholar at 11/4, tracked separately.

Nottingham 14:59 | Northern Viola | 2pt win at 7/2, General

Northern Viola at 7/2 has a specific claim to improve again. At Beverley she came from the rear, challenged wide and sustained her run to win over a little more than a mile. The rise from 54 to 56 is manageable, and moving to ten furlongs looks a logical attempt to make that finish count for more.

The danger is pace rather than simply stamina. With only five runners, James Sullivan cannot assume that the field will go fast enough to bring a waiting ride into play. Crown Ranger and Kanzi have gone forward before, but they may not press each other. Northern Viola must remain within reach if the leaders conserve energy. Her light weight is useful; it does not rescue an exaggerated hold-up ride.

Akaraka at 2/1 is the next best after improving substantially for a mile at Thirsk. He too has a reasonable further-trip argument, though that still has to be demonstrated. Crown Ranger weakened over nine furlongs last time, and Kanzi must recover from a poor Carlisle run. Northern Viola's recent sustained finish gives her a sound independent case at the more rewarding price.

VERDICT: Northern Viola, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Minimum price 10/3. The next best is Akaraka at 2/1, tracked separately.

Nottingham 15:29 | Tamzan | 2pt win at 11/2, Bet365

Tamzan is the NAP at 11/2. Her Leicester mile win was followed by a Sandown third and then a half-length second back at Leicester. The latest run showed her finding a passage, moving through the field and briefly leading late. That is a current finishing effort worth supporting, rather than a collection of excuses for old defeats.

She is 2lb higher on 77, and Ashley Lewis takes 3lb off the published weight. The claim matters, but the mark rise still has to be earned. Stall two gives an economical route only if the gaps appear; being covered up behind weakening horses is the obvious risk. A reasonably contested pace should help, although there is no need to invent a pace collapse.

Quisana at 6/1 is the next best. The Nottingham win and return from ten furlongs to a mile make a clear course-and-trip case, and an efficient prominent ride could be hard to pass. Darkness is reliable enough to be respected but has less price appeal. Duke's Command must transfer a Southwell rebound to turf; the falling marks of Treasure Time and Dhahabi are not sufficient by themselves. Tamzan brings the strongest balance of recent progress and available price.

VERDICT: Tamzan, 2pt win at 11/2, Bet365. Minimum price 5/1. The next best is Quisana at 6/1, tracked separately.

Nottingham 15:59 | Norman Invasion | 1pt e/w at 10/1, Bet365, 4 places

Norman Invasion at 10/1 is not selected simply for the latest Wolverhampton win. The important turf reference is his Newbury fourth over ten furlongs in July, beaten only three quarters of a length after racing keenly and wide and having difficulty finding room. That effort puts him close to the required level without relying on an unexplained surface transformation.

He is now 3lb higher on 76, with Ashley Lewis claiming 3lb. The all-weather win showed a determined response after losing the lead, but the return to grass still requires a clean performance. Early keenness is the main objection, particularly if several runners want a prominent position. Bet365 offers four places, which makes the each-way price worthwhile for a horse with a sound winning case and a realistic chance of staying involved.

Medway Queen at 13/2 is the strongest alternative. Her Sandown comeback second was a strong late run and she is only a pound higher. Get Outta Here also finished well at Windsor, but the wider draw and shorter price offer less margin. Brighton View and Kasgani are credible; the latter's absence makes fitness a question. Norman Invasion's specific ten-furlong turf evidence gives the larger price substance.

VERDICT: Norman Invasion, 1pt e/w at 10/1, Bet365, 4 places. Minimum price 9/1. The next best is Medway Queen at 13/2, tracked separately.

Nottingham 16:29 | Kokoluna | 1pt e/w at 17/2, Bet365, 4 places

Kokoluna at 17/2 supplies the day's next best bet. Her Goodwood ten-furlong win was awarded after a close finish, so it should not be embellished into a claim that she crossed the line first. The performance was competitive, and her earlier Haydock second on good to soft gives another reference at the distance.

She moves from 72 to 75, a manageable rise at this price, with Charles Bishop retaining the ride. Stall one can save ground but can also leave a waiting horse dependent on gaps. That is the reservation to set against a race containing several runners willing to go forward. Four places at Bet365 provide a sensible each-way position without requiring us to pretend she is markedly superior to the field.

Edwin Hubble at 5/1 is the next best in this race, with a consistent sequence of ten-furlong efforts and a Sandown win. Plan C's latest third was a welcome rebound rather than an unbroken run of form. Del Corso has course-and-distance form but may not receive an easy lead. Patrol is a genuine danger after an all-weather win and competitive turf runs. Kokoluna's price offers the better balance of distance evidence and handicap uncertainty.

VERDICT: Kokoluna, 1pt e/w at 17/2, Bet365, 4 places. Minimum price 8/1. The next best is Edwin Hubble at 5/1, tracked separately.

Nottingham 17:05 | Golden Prosperity | 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, William Hill, 5 places

Golden Prosperity at 11/1 gives the last race a proper current-form angle. He was a close fourth at Pontefract after being short of room, then third at Catterick, beaten three quarters of a length. Those two turf efforts came from today's 46, and his previous Nottingham six-furlong win makes this more than a hopeful course guess.

The earlier Redcar defeat warns against calling him reliable. Stall two may help William Pyle save ground, but a crowded sprint can turn that benefit into another traffic problem. William Hill's five-place offer makes the each-way price attractive when supported by the two most recent finishes, rather than by the rating alone.

Asadjumeirah at 5/1 is the strongest alternative after a Newcastle win and nose second. His much lower turf mark is interesting, but all-weather and turf ratings are not interchangeable promises. King Cherry has a penalty and two poor runs behind his emphatic Kempton success. Rambuso Creek's soft-ground Nottingham win matters if the rain arrives, though he returns from an absence. Golden Prosperity has the more immediate turf evidence at a price which allows for his shortcomings.

VERDICT: Golden Prosperity, 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, William Hill, 5 places. Minimum price 11/1. The next best is Asadjumeirah at 5/1, tracked separately.

Best bets of the day

Tamzan is the NAP on current mile form and the price available. Kokoluna is next best of the day, with competitive ten-furlong evidence and a manageable rating rise. Norman Invasion has a specific turf-performance argument behind the latest all-weather win, while Golden Prosperity brings two close recent turf finishes to the closing sprint.
