Ascot's six-race opener to the Autumn Racing Weekend combines a high-quality Listed staying contest with two searching straight-course handicaps. The market is tight around several lightly raced horses, so the better opportunities come from proven course form and prices that still allow for tactical uncertainty.

The ground is good, good to firm in places after watering, with partly cloudy conditions forecast. The two round-course staying races are each 40 yards longer because of rail movements. There are 64 active runners across the card, and prices were checked at 08:07 BST.

13:50 Amateur Jockeys Handicap | 14:25 Fillies Novice | 15:00 Classified Stakes | 15:35 Noel Murless Stakes | 16:10 Six-Furlong Handicap | 16:45 Two-Mile Handicap

Ascot 13:50 | Tex | 2pt win at 11/4, General

NEXT BEST: Dannick

The opener is a proper amateur-riders' puzzle, but Tex has a much cleaner case than most. He returned to this course and distance last month and travelled strongly before settling the issue, then confirmed his well-being with a narrow second at Newmarket. Simon Walker is an obvious asset in this company, while stall three should allow him to find cover without being stranded away from the pace.

Dangers are plentiful. Norcross Brow is reliable and Son keeps threatening to land a prize of this nature, but neither looks as well treated as the selection at the prices. Dannick is the one who makes the deeper value appeal. He has won twice in his last five starts, lost little in defeat at Salisbury, and Hezekiah March takes off 7lb from a workable position in stall 16. His 12/1 quote with five places is worth taking separately.

VERDICT: Tex, 2pt win at 11/4, General. Do not chase below 11/4. Dannick is the next best at 12/1 and also merits 0.75pt e/w at 12/1 with Unibet, five places.

Ascot 14:25 | Pink Larkspur | 3pt win at 13/8, General

NEXT BEST: Learning

Only five remain and this is a race for a positive view rather than place hunting. Pink Larkspur was slowly away on debut at Kempton, yet still worked through the field to finish second behind a decisive winner. That experience should sharpen her and the John and Thady Gosden yard has been operating at a healthy strike-rate. William Buick can keep matters simple from stall four.

Learning is the solid alternative. She has improved with each run and made the pace when beaten only half a length at Newbury. Pink Larkspur's greater scope is the deciding factor, but Learning at 5/2 is a credible next best rather than an afterthought. Concurrent may progress, though she needs a bigger step than the front two on what they have shown.

VERDICT: Pink Larkspur, 3pt win at 13/8, General. Evens is the minimum. Learning is next best at 5/2.

Ascot 15:00 | Suspicious Mindz | 0.5pt e/w at 16/1, General, 3 places

NEXT BEST: Drymee

This classified event is much more open than the top of the market suggests. Princling and Cockade bring obvious stable credentials, but both return from breaks and have questions to answer at short prices. Drymee is progressive and impressed at Sandown, although this is a deeper race from a higher level.

Suspicious Mindz has the profile to outrun 16/1. He won a 20-runner Curragh handicap over six furlongs, followed up at Doncaster over seven, and then finished strongly for second here last month. The extra furlong is a fair question, as is stall 12, but he has already handled a mile and the price allows for those risks. His recent Ascot evidence is especially persuasive in a race containing several less battle-hardened rivals.

Drymee is the next best at 15/2. James Doyle is a major positive and her Sandown win suggested she had more to give, but Suspicious Mindz offers the stronger value balance.

VERDICT: Suspicious Mindz, 0.5pt e/w at 16/1, General, 3 places. Keep to 16/1 or bigger. Drymee is next best at 15/2.

Ascot 15:35 | Galilean Quality | 1.5pt win at 15/2, Paddy Power

NEXT BEST: Galiyan

Infraad is the likeliest winner after taking the Melrose in convincing fashion, but odds-on quotes leave no room for the things that can go wrong in a steadily run six-runner staying race. Galiyan has the highest established level and his St Leger fifth reads well, though 5/2 asks the market to forgive two defeats without offering much margin.

Galilean Quality is the value alternative. He won over this course and distance on fast ground in July, chased Infraad home at York and again hit the frame in a testing race at Haydock. He has to reverse the Melrose form, but a cleaner tactical position and the return to Ascot make 15/2 too large. Only two places are available, so the recommendation is win-only.

VERDICT: Galilean Quality, 1.5pt win at 15/2, Paddy Power. Take 7/1 or bigger. Galiyan is next best at 5/2.

Ascot 16:10 | Far Above Dream | 2pt win at 4/1, Bet365

NEXT BEST: Goldmoyne

The feature handicap is deep and should be run honestly. Goldmoyne, Northcliff and Pilu all arrive in form, while the lightly raced Yordan brings upside but faces a severe rise in grade. A stands-side draw may help those able to settle behind the leaders, yet the pace is spread well enough across the field to avoid treating the draw as decisive.

Far Above Dream is worth forgiving for the Ayr Gold Cup, where heavy ground blunted a horse whose best work has come on a sounder surface. Before that he was beaten a nose in a 20-runner York handicap, finished sixth of 27 at Goodwood and fourth of 27 over this course and distance. Those are the strongest big-field pieces of form in the race, and 4/1 remains fair now the ground has dried.

Goldmoyne is the next best at 14/1 after making most of the running when narrowly denied in the Ayr Silver Cup. His draw in 18 should allow a clean attacking route, though a 2lb rise and the return to fast ground make him less straightforward than the selection.

VERDICT: Far Above Dream, 2pt win at 4/1, Bet365. The limit is 11/4. Goldmoyne is next best at 14/1.

Ascot 16:45 | Cranachan | 3pt win at 11/10, Bet365, BetVictor, Bet Goodwin

NEXT BEST: Hot Fuss

Cranachan has developed into a dependable stayer and his Chester success showed that two miles on a sound surface is well within range. He travelled smoothly, took command before the final furlong and had enough in reserve to repel the late challenge. The return to Ascot asks a different tactical question, but he has the speed to hold a position and still receives weight from the older horses.

Hot Fuss is the main alternative at 4/1. He has useful Flat form and his hurdles campaign confirms that stamina will not be the issue, although a 175-day absence makes him harder to support as the primary bet. Vaguely Royal can rebound from his latest run and Just An Hour comes here in form, but Cranachan owns the strongest blend of progress, race fitness and trip evidence.

VERDICT: Cranachan, 3pt win at 11/10, Bet365, BetVictor, Bet Goodwin. Evens is the floor. Hot Fuss is next best at 4/1.

Best bets of the day

Cranachan is the NAP because his current staying profile is the most dependable on the card, while Far Above Dream rates the next best after producing several pieces of elite big-field sprint form on sound ground. Suspicious Mindz and Dannick provide the deeper-priced angles, each with recent form that gives the market something tangible to underestimate.
