Kittys Glance has been giving a reliable account over the summer and autumn, and a return to good ground makes her the most appealing price on Warwick's Stan Mellor Chase Day. There are opportunities among the novice hurdlers and handicappers, but the two smallest chasing fields need a more sceptical approach. I am content to watch them.
The current card reports good ground, watering, a GoingStick reading of 5.8 and use of the inner hurdle track. The Met Office forecast shows sunny intervals and about 11C through the racing afternoon, with a 20% chance of rain and gusts around 24-26mph. Those are forecasts, not a promise that conditions will stay unchanged.

NAP: Kittys Glance at 5/1
Quick race guide
Warwick is left-handed and essentially sharp, with tight bends and five fences in quick succession along the back straight. Fluent jumping and an economical position matter. A prominent position is useful only if the horse has settled and has enough left to finish. There is no stall-draw question on this jumps card.
12:18 - Two-runner beginners' chase, watched without a bet. 12:53 - Juvenile maiden hurdle for Flat recruits. 13:28 - Novice hurdle over two miles and three furlongs. 14:03 - Two-mile handicap hurdle on the inner circuit. 14:38 - Four-runner intermediate-distance handicap chase. 15:13 - Three-runner staying chase, another watching race. 15:48 - Two-mile-five-furlong hurdle handicap, where the NAP runs.
Reported rail movements are +9 yards at12:18, -21 yards at12:53 and14:03, -28 yards at13:28 and15:48, +12 yards at14:38 and +18 yards at15:13. Advertised distances and rail adjustments are listed separately; do not add an adjustment twice.

The feature is an interesting schooling examination to watch, but I do not want to take 4/11 about Un Sens A La Vie on his first start over regulation fences. His point-to-point background is a positive and his latest Market Rasen hurdle win supplies current form. Neither removes the risk of an inexperienced horse being rushed by the succession of fences down the back.
He has also shown a tendency to take a strong hold. If the race becomes a tactical contest, settling and jumping at the right tempo will matter more than a smooth passage through a large field. A small field reduces interference; it does not make a chasing debut predictable. His hurdle mark of 133 gives a useful measure of his ability, but it is not a chase rating earned by completing this task.
There is no bet for me at the available terms. I would rather learn something about how he handles the larger obstacles than pay a price which leaves almost no room for an ordinary novice mistake.
Warwick 12:53 | Kelly Burn
Back Kelly Burn: 3pt win at 7/4, General.
Kelly Burn brings the most persuasive winning Flat record to this juvenile hurdle. She won three times earlier in the year, at Wolverhampton, Yarmouth and Goodwood, with the last success achieved from a mark of 75. The Goodwood run was particularly useful evidence of resolve: she was short of room, found a way through and kept responding in a tight finish.
She receives seven pounds from the geldings and has already won over a mile and six furlongs. That gives her a plausible starting point for a sharp two miles over hurdles, although it would be wrong to claim the stamina question is settled. Her latest Flat run over two miles at Newmarket was a heavy defeat. I want to see her settle into a rhythm, rather than pull away her chance before the race becomes serious.
Dan and Harry Skelton make a strong pairing for the change of discipline, and a hood is listed. Plan C has respectable Flat ability for Alan King, while Thisonesforyou arrives after a Lingfield win. Kelly Burn has the stronger body of winning evidence, and at 7/4 I am prepared to accept the hurdling-debut risk. My lower limit is 7/4.
Minimum acceptable price: 7/4.
Warwick 13:28 | Nightflyer
Back Nightflyer: 2pt win at 6/1, Bet365, BetMGM.
Nightflyer is worth a win bet at 6/1 because his completed hurdle form is stronger than the market gap suggests. He won over two miles and four furlongs at Uttoxeter on good ground in September, having previously finished a close second at Newton Abbot. Those performances establish both the distance range and the ability to compete through the closing stages.
He carries 11st 6 lb, six pounds below the top weight. The weights do not make him the best horse automatically, but they give his established form a practical route into the race. His latest second at Fontwell was a 14-length defeat, and he was beaten decisively once the winner quickened. That is why I want the bigger price rather than treat a runner-up finish as an unqualified positive.
One Knight has two bumper wins and receives further weight through a seven-pound claim, but he unseated on his latest hurdle start and was well beaten on his completed debut. Old Clayesmorian also needs to put an interrupted recent profile behind him. Nightflyer is the more measurable proposition: fit, proven over the trip and capable of using a forward position. Take 6/1, with 11/2 the minimum.
Minimum acceptable price: 11/2.
Warwick 14:03 | No Bet
Berry Edge has been putting his hurdle career together, and his latest Uttoxeter win was a useful step forward. He travelled into contention three out, challenged at the next and went clear after taking the lead late on. The return to two miles on good ground suited him, and those broad conditions are repeated here.
The difficulty is the price. He has been raised nine pounds to 96, and the available 5/2 leaves too little margin for that increase. I wanted at least 11/4 before the latest check. His Worcester second shows that he can still waste energy by pulling hard and racing wide, so there is no reason to pay less simply because the recent form looks progressive.
Woodstock City has a respectable Market Rasen third, but needs a stronger finish than he showed there. A Good Yomp has an Aintree win and local placed form, though he returns from 172 days away. Crown of India has been competitive without consistently finding enough after the last. There are plausible runners here, but none offers a sufficiently persuasive case at the current prices. I am leaving the race alone.
Warwick 14:38 | Court In A Storm
Back Court In A Storm: 3pt win at 13/8, General.
Court In A Storm has already answered the distance question and arrives after a hard-earned Market Rasen chase win. He took over before three out, was headed late and fought back to win narrowly. The handicapper has added only two pounds, leaving him on 118. That looks a reasonable price for a horse whose best recent work has come over intermediate and staying distances.
He carries top weight, so this is not a case of receiving a large concession from a more accomplished horse. The argument is experience and a proven ability to keep finding when the race gets serious. Ciaran Gethings can place him close enough to use those qualities rather than asking for a sudden burst after the final fence.
The strongest concern is his jumping. He fell at the last at Worcester in August, and other runs have contained untidy leaps. Warwick can expose a horse who loses rhythm between the fences. Coastguard Station has fallen markedly in the handicap but has finished a long way behind on his last three starts; Ukantango also needs a revival. Court In A Storm is the sounder current option at 13/8, provided that price remains available.
Minimum acceptable price: 13/8.

I am leaving this staying chase alone. I Love You Sivola returns just two days after finishing fourth over hurdles at Worcester, beaten nearly 19 lengths. He won a Hereford hurdle in October, but that does not establish that he will reproduce the same level back over fences after such a quick turnaround. At 10/11, I do not see enough compensation for those uncertainties.
The Magus is no easier to trust. He was pulled up at Ffos Las on his return after a succession of untidy jumps. On his previous run there he had been moving into a strong position before falling two out, which shows both the ability and the recurring problem. His Hereford second from the spring is a better piece of completed form, but he has to recover that level and put together a clean round.
A small field may give him more room, yet it will not correct the errors for him. The possible improvement from a recent run is already a familiar argument, and it is not enough to turn an unreliable profile into a sound bet at the current quote.
Warwick 15:48 | Kittys Glance
Back Kittys Glance: 2pt win at 5/1, General.
Kittys Glance is the NAP at 5/1. Her case is built on repeated good-ground form over intermediate distances, rather than one run which requires everything to fall into place again. Before winning at Newton Abbot in September she had finished second at Hereford, third at Worcester, second at Newton Abbot and second at Stratford. That is a useful foundation for judging what she can reproduce.
The latest win also suggested she was finding a stronger finish. She moved into the lead before two out and kept going well, having been keen earlier. A five-pound rise to 110 is fair, though it means she must progress again rather than simply repeat a winning rating. The trip is within her established range and the good ground is a clear positive.
Katarcice is a proper opponent after winning despite interference from a loose horse at Stratford. Kentucky River has a course win and Sean Bowen, but returns from 95 days off after a Flat defeat. I prefer the consistency behind Kittys Glance at the price. Alan King's supplied fortnight figures show no wins from 16 runners, which is a reason for restraint rather than a reason to discard her form. Take 5/1, with 9/2 the floor.
Minimum acceptable price: 9/2.
Best bets of the day
Kittys Glance is the NAP in the finale, where her repeated good-ground efforts and proven trip make the price attractive. Nightflyer offers a bigger-priced win chance on completed hurdle form. Kelly Burn and Court In A Storm have different questions to answer, one switching disciplines and the other needing a fluent round.
