Maldini Milano has already shown how to win around Plumpton, and his return in the Southern Cranes Handicap Hurdle provides the most appealing price on Monday's card. The afternoon offers a mixture of improving chasers, returning novices and exposed handicappers. I am happy to wait until the maiden hurdle for the first bet.
The official going report gives good, good to soft in places, after 0.5mm of morning rain. Dry weather with sunny spells is forecast, with a cool northerly wind and a maximum of 12C. These are morning assessments: a change in the surface or a late withdrawal can change the value.

Quick race guide
Plumpton is a tight, undulating left-handed course. Accurate jumping and a position within striking distance are valuable; being close to the pace is less useful if a horse has spent too much energy getting there. Today's race shapes are individual judgements, not measured sectional forecasts.
13:00 - Extended three-mile novice handicap chase; watch rather than bet. 13:30 - Two-mile-four-furlong maiden hurdle; experience against hurdling newcomers. 14:00 - Intermediate-distance novice handicap chase; recent fitness is useful. 14:30 - Class 2 handicap hurdle; the feature demands both pace and a finish. 15:00 - Class 3 staying handicap chase; weigh progression against higher marks. 15:30 - Short handicap hurdle; early pace could decide who settles. 16:00 - Two-mile-four-furlong handicap hurdle; an encouraging recent return carries weight.
Current Racing Post details record rail adjustments of +37 yards for 13:00 and 15:00, +25 yards for 14:00 and -25 yards for the other four races. Treat advertised distances and rail movements separately rather than adding the adjustment twice.
Plumpton 13:00 | No Bet
I can leave the opener alone. Hard Stare has a point-to-point background and produced two thirds over hurdles in the spring, but those defeats were by 24½ and 12 lengths. He now returns from 166 days off and tackles regulation fences for the first time. At 9/4, I want more evidence that he will jump efficiently and see out this longer trip.
Lancier des Obeaux is even harder to price with confidence. His opening mark is low, yet he has finished unplaced in all five starts and has not raced since April. The switch to fences and longer distance could change him; the price already asks us to believe that it will. Could Be You ran a little better at Southwell, but a fifth in a modest hurdle is a thin foundation for a chase bet. There is no need to buy a ticket simply because only four go to post.
Plumpton 13:30 | Bold Step
Back Bold Step: 3pt win at 2/1, General.
Bold Step has already done the part of the job that several of these are attempting for the first time. He was second in an Exeter bumper, then filled the same position over hurdles at Hexham in May. The latter came over two miles and four furlongs on good ground, a useful match for this assignment. He was beaten four and a half lengths, so there is no need to dress the performance up as something spectacular. Its merit is that he stayed, completed and kept going.
Nico de Boinville can keep him close enough to use that experience. Le Cold Grey showed speed in two bumpers, though his willingness to get on with things could be a concern over this longer trip after a wind operation. Silverhill Freya has a mare's allowance but no rules result in the available history.
The objection is fitness: Bold Step has been away for 167 days. Nicky Henderson's runner must be ready to reproduce his spring effort, rather than merely use this as a starting point. At 2/1 I am prepared to take that chance; below 15/8 the cushion becomes too small.
Minimum acceptable price: 15/8.
Plumpton 14:00 | Hiero Sport
Back Hiero Sport: 2pt win at 10/3, General.
Hiero Sport brings a recent piece of chase form to a race full of horses whose best argument begins with what they might do after a break. He was second at Market Rasen 25 days ago, beaten four and a quarter lengths over a comparable distance on good ground. He stays on the same mark of 82. That makes 10/3 a workable quote without requiring a sudden leap in ability.
He is not a faultless jumper. He unseated at the first at Worcester in August and failed to build on a promising position at Bangor the following month. The latest run matters because he completed, rallied and held second, rather than simply travelling well before finding nothing. Bryan Carver does not have to force the pace with Lunar Ocean in the field.
Diamond Days has had a recent run and Joe Tizzard's team is going well, but his jumping has also interrupted his progress. Known Warrior returns quickly after an unseat; Onewayortother has a much longer absence to overcome. I prefer the current evidence behind Hiero Sport, while acknowledging that another untidy round would undo the case.
Minimum acceptable price: 10/3.
Plumpton 14:30 | Maldini Milano
Back Maldini Milano: 2pt win at 5/1, Bet365.
Maldini Milano is my NAP because his case has a firm local foundation and the price allows for the risk. He won over this course and distance last November and again in April, both times on good ground. In the April handicap he moved forward three out, took over before two out and kept finding. That is a particularly useful way of winning around Plumpton: get into the race before the final turn and keep the momentum.
He returns on 121, eight pounds above the mark from which he won in April. Paddy Hanlon's five-pound claim reduces part of that increase in the weight carried, although a claim does not erase the handicapper's assessment or guarantee the same ride. There should be enough pace for him to settle behind the leaders. Sixty Plus raced far too freely here last month and Let Him B arrives after a comfortable Cork success, so this need not become a sprint.
The Irish challenger must absorb a 16lb rise from his Cork winning mark, and this is stronger company. Stream of Stars has a recent run and respectable course form; he is a serious opponent. My reservation about Maldini Milano is the 210-day absence. I would want him moving freely and looking ready in the paddock. At 5/1, with 9/2 the floor, the two course wins justify taking the chance.
Minimum acceptable price: 9/2.
Plumpton 15:00 | Rickety Bridge
Back Rickety Bridge: 2pt win at 3/1, General.
Rickety Bridge improved with each of his three Newton Abbot chase wins in May and June. They all came over an extended three miles on good ground, and he did not need a single rigid tactic to win them. He could follow the pace, make ground and take control late. That versatility matters with Tommie Beau and Lord Accord capable of ensuring a proper gallop.
The handicapper has had his say. Rickety Bridge began that sequence from 110 and now runs from 125, including an eight-pound rise for the latest win. He also returns from 143 days away. This is therefore a bet on a progressive chaser having another step in him, rather than an assumption that three ones beside his name make a fourth inevitable. His earlier hurdle run here was poor, but his subsequent chase form is much stronger evidence for today's task.
Alien Storm has a good Bangor second in his record but fell on his next chase start and was well beaten over hurdles on his return. Ile de Jersey has been off for almost a year. Rickety Bridge is the one whose recent chase record most clearly describes a horse moving forward. Take 3/1, with 11/4 the minimum.
Minimum acceptable price: 11/4.
Plumpton 15:30 | Uncle Remus
Back Uncle Remus: 3pt win at 5/2, General.
Uncle Remus has found a productive rhythm: a win at Uttoxeter, a second there, then another win at Fontwell. All three came over short hurdle trips, and he has been able to use a forward position rather than rely on a late run through traffic. That is an attractive starting point at this turning track.
The Fontwell win earned an eight-pound rise to 97. He is not being given the same race again, but his allotted 11st 1lb still leaves him 15lb below Goodwin Face at the top of the handicap. The latter is a course winner and travelled strongly when second at Fontwell in September; he cannot be dismissed simply because he carries more weight.
My preference is for Uncle Remus to get into his jumping rhythm early and make the others respond. He has made mistakes, including in his recent good runs, so a soft lead is not something to take for granted. Soul Limbo could complicate matters if he pulls his way forward. The selection remains worth backing at 5/2, but I would not follow him below that price after the handicap rise.
Minimum acceptable price: 5/2.
Plumpton 16:00 | Calme Olympien
Back Calme Olympien: 2pt win at 11/2, General.
Calme Olympien returned with a useful fourth at Chepstow, only three and a half lengths behind the winner, and the handicapper has left him on 108. That is six pounds below his winning mark at Ffos Las last autumn. He does not need to become a different horse to be competitive from here; he needs to build a little on a run that should have brought him forward.
Good ground and an intermediate trip have already suited him. His Chepstow jumping was not immaculate, but he kept his place and made some late ground. With Low Expectations likely to be keen and Everyonesgame capable of going forward, David Noonan should have a pace to follow. I would rather see him travelling within reach than trying to recover several lengths around the final turn.
The Boss Bear has a course win but finished well beaten on his last two starts and returns from 210 days away. Keno Black is also returning after a break and fell on his latest appearance. Those are substantial questions at relatively short prices. Calme Olympien offers the more tangible recent evidence at 11/2. I would still want 5/1 because he has not been finding much extra in several of his defeats.
Minimum acceptable price: 5/1.
Best bets of the day
Maldini Milano is the NAP in the 14:30 feature, where his two course-and-distance wins offer a specific reason to expect him to handle the track. Bold Step brings valuable hurdling experience to the maiden, while Rickety Bridge has the clearest progressive chase record in the staying handicap. Each still has a seasonal-return question to answer. Uncle Remus has current fitness on his side; his new mark means the price is particularly important.
