The second day of Down Royal's BetVictor Festival brings a Grade 1 staying chase in which established class and current fitness do not necessarily point in the same direction. Heart Wood is my NAP, with his good-ground Cheltenham success providing the clearest argument for supporting proven ability. Elsewhere, Ladies Well and Radiator Springs bring recent handicap form, while two races are best watched.

The current card describes the hurdles course as good to yielding and the chase course as good, with watering. The racecourse notice confirms watering after Friday's racing. That is a different setting from yesterday's going and needs to be respected. The local forecast is mainly dry around Belfast and the east during the day, with rain pushing east later. Any further going amendment should be checked before betting.

Quick race guide

13:00: juvenile hurdle, established winning technique against potential. 13:30: maiden hurdle, new recruits need to establish their level. 14:05: handicap hurdle, recent Listowel form and careful timing. 14:38: staying handicap chase, progress against higher marks. 15:15: Grade 1 Champion Chase, good-ground class and seasonal readiness. 15:50: Grade 2 chase, penalties and return-from-a-break questions. 16:20: bumper, current placed form against newcomers.

Down Royal 13:00 | Cite Florale

Back Cite Florale: 3pt win at 2/1, General.

Cite Florale is the opening selection because her first hurdle run supplied something the newcomers still need to establish: the ability to stay involved despite mistakes and finish her race under pressure.

She won at Killarney over an extended two miles in July. The margin was only a neck and the opposition was ordinary, so this is not a claim that she has already set an exceptional standard. More useful was the manner in which she kept responding after an uncertain early jump and another mistake when lightly hampered three out. She found enough to take the lead in the closing strides.

The weight calculation deserves care. Her winning penalty does not mean she gives weight to the entire field. With the fillies' allowance included, she carries 10st11lb, a pound less than the principal geldings. That does not remove the need for improvement, but it prevents the penalty becoming an exaggerated reason to oppose her.

Admiral Will Brown has useful Flat ability, including a Navan win and a Curragh fourth, but has yet to demonstrate his technique over hurdles. Contador's Punchestown debut was much weaker than his pedigree might have encouraged us to expect. Both can improve, though neither supplies a particularly secure reason to dismiss the filly.

The 106-day absence is the obvious reservation. I want her settled close to the pace, jumping economically rather than being asked to force the issue. At 2/1 the win case is sound enough; below 15/8 there would be too little compensation for the return and the need to progress from a modest maiden.

Minimum acceptable price: 15/8.

Down Royal 13:30 | No Bet

No Bet. There are horses here who may become useful hurdlers, but too much of the case for backing them depends on the transition going smoothly on the first attempt.

S T Hamo has the most persuasive recent bumper reference among those I have considered. He was second at Fairyhouse, beaten two and a half lengths, after helping to make the running. That establishes fitness and a degree of ability. It does not establish that he can organise himself as efficiently over hurdles or that he will find more when challenged late.

Abando has already had two hurdle runs. His Roscommon third and Fairyhouse fourth are a more direct guide, although he was beaten more than ten lengths on both occasions and made mistakes in the earlier race. War Rooms brings useful Flat form, including a Ballinrobe win, but has also shown keenness. His two earlier hurdle starts were poor, so the ability on the level has yet to become a persuasive jumping argument.

The prices offer a range of possibilities rather than one compelling wager. I would rather see the recruits settle, jump and finish before treating their backgrounds as a substitute for evidence. The withdrawals have also removed three declared runners, so the original field should not be used for any late market assessment. This is a race to watch.

Down Royal 14:05 | Radiator Springs

Back Radiator Springs: 2pt win at 4/1, Sky Bet, Paddy Power.

A fourth place can conceal a more useful effort than a distant second. Radiator Springs was beaten only a length in a crowded Listowel finish, and the handicapper has raised him just one pound for it.

He raced over two miles and two furlongs that day, moved into contention before the straight and briefly held the lead. The closing stages exposed the limits of the advantage he had obtained, but they did not expose a horse out of his depth. Returning to a shorter trip gives his rider a reasonable opportunity to keep more in reserve. It is a tactical possibility, not an automatic improvement for losing a couple of furlongs.

His earlier Fairyhouse second is another relevant piece of handicap form. He runs from 120 today, compared with 119 at Listowel and 116 for that spring placing. The mark requires a little more, but the recent effort suggests he remains competitive rather than stranded by a large reassessment.

Lieber Nicc won this race a year ago but has not been seen since. Lazare de Star has strong winter form, including two narrow seconds, although his final spring run was weaker and he also returns from a substantial break. Mino Des Mottes has been competitive through the summer but faded after making the running at Gowran.

Radiator Springs need not settle the argument in front. Several rivals can provide a lead, and a position just behind them should give him a chance to produce a better-timed finish. At 4/1 I prefer that recent, relevant evidence to paying mainly for a return to last season's best. I would not chase him below 7/2.

Minimum acceptable price: 7/2.

Down Royal 14:38 | Ladies Well

Back Ladies Well: 2pt win at 11/2, General.

Ladies Well has been moving through her handicaps in a way that deserves respect. Three wins in her last five chase starts supply a convincing recent sequence, although the latest nine-pound rise leaves no room for extravagant claims about her mark.

She won at Killarney in July, won there again over an extended two miles and seven furlongs on good ground in August, and returned to winning form at Roscommon last month. The good-ground Killarney success matters today. It gives the distance and surface argument something firmer than an assumption that every progressive chaser wants softer going.

At Roscommon she made her progress from behind the pace and found enough to lead before the last. There was a less persuasive Ballinrobe fourth between the two latest wins, so consistency is relative rather than absolute. Her current mark of 107, compared with 98 for both those runs, also asks for another advance.

The likely race shape gives that advance a plausible setting. Brucejack has won from the front at this course, Dinoland has also led in staying chases, and Intense Approach can be enthusiastic early. I would rather see Ladies Well settle behind that activity than try to prove that her recent wins entitle her to dictate.

Drop A Threat has a worthwhile Galway second and starts for Gordon Elliott, but his latest Listowel effort was much weaker. Dinoland's return over hurdles should have helped his fitness, though he is appreciably higher than for his spring chase wins. Ladies Well's current progression is the more persuasive proposition at 11/2. The higher mark is the reason for demanding at least 5/1, not a detail to be ignored.

Minimum acceptable price: 5/1.

Down Royal 15:15 | Heart Wood

Back Heart Wood: 2pt win at 3/1, William Hill, PricedUp.

The Champion Chase is a proper examination of established ability against next-season promise. Heart Wood is the NAP because his best form is already high enough for this race and the good ground gives that form a particularly relevant setting.

He won the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham on good ground, travelling close to the pace, jumping accurately and moving clear before the last. That is a substantial piece of evidence about his ability to operate at Grade 1 level. The subsequent Aintree third was less convincing: he made a mistake three out and could not threaten the leading pair. Both runs belong in the assessment.

The distance is not entirely unfamiliar territory. He won over two miles and seven furlongs at Punchestown last October, staying on strongly after taking the lead at the last. That does not make every possible three-mile pace comfortable, but it is enough to resist treating him solely as a horse for intermediate trips.

Romeo Coolio has considerable scope after a highly successful novice season, though his Cheltenham run ended in a pull-up after errors. Affordale Fury has top-class staying form and was second here last year, but his latest start also ended early and he has been absent even longer. Fleur In The Park brings a recent Gowran win and is entitled to use that fitness against the returning horses.

Heart Wood has not raced for 204 days, so readiness remains the principal objection. I am not assuming that a spring Grade 1 winner must reproduce that level automatically in October. At 3/1, however, his combination of good-ground class, proven jumping and relevant stamina offers enough compensation. A position behind the likely leaders should allow his rider to make the challenge when the race develops, rather than spend his chance forcing it too early.

Minimum acceptable price: 11/4.

Down Royal 15:50 | No Bet

No Bet. This Grade 2 contains plenty of ability, but the weight terms and the prices leave me without a wager I am prepared to recommend.

Koktail Divin won a Grade 1 at Aintree and has the strongest recent high-level win among the runners considered here. He also carries a ten-pound penalty for it. The performance deserves respect; the penalty deserves to be included in the price. At odds-on, after 205 days away, there is little room for anything short of a fluent return.

Jacob's Ladder is a more tempting price. His winter chase wins and a close enough second at Punchestown establish ability, but his latest third was a 42-length defeat. That is not the same evidence as a competitive placing. His strongest winning form also came on soft and heavy ground, while today's chase surface is good. He needs both readiness and a return to a better level.

Break My Soul's close Cheltenham third gives her a worthwhile handicap reference, though the following chase run ended in a pull-up and the longer trip asks another question. Mic Drop and Herja have current form, but their ratings leave them facing a much larger class test.

Those reservations do not make any of the horses incapable of winning. They make the available prices insufficiently attractive for a firm betting recommendation. I am content to watch this one.

Down Royal 16:20 | Bravemans Call

Back Bravemans Call: 2pt win at 10/3, General.

Bravemans Call offers a useful counterweight to the uncertainties of a bumper full of lightly raced horses and newcomers. He has already run two races which show that he can travel, make progress and finish competitively under rules.

He was third at Killarney in July, beaten six and a half lengths, and then second at Listowel last month, beaten only half a length. The latter effort is the important one. He raced keenly, moved into contention and stayed on, so there is a plausible route to improvement through better settlement rather than through an entirely new level of ability.

The seven-pound claim reduces the weight carried, although it should not be treated as an automatic seven-pound improvement in performance. The practical issue is whether his rider can find cover and keep him relaxed until the race begins in earnest. Another early battle with the bridle would make that narrow defeat less useful as a guide.

Riversdale is prominent in the betting despite having no supplied rules record, while Malpaso and Chaparro are also newcomers. Their backgrounds may contain promise, but the racecourse still has to confirm it. Some See Stars has a recent Fairyhouse third, though his wider record is considerably more uneven. Back In Favour needs to recover from a disappointing Punchestown run after earlier placings.

At 10/3, Bravemans Call gives us current bumper form at a price which does not require dismissing all the unexposed runners. I would like him ridden with patience behind a lead. The finishing effort is the attraction; there is no need to spend it proving how keenly he can travel in the first mile.

Minimum acceptable price: 3/1.

Best bets of the day

Heart Wood is the NAP at 3/1, with 11/4 the minimum. Ladies Well appeals at 11/2 provided her continued progress offsets the higher mark. Radiator Springs is worth supporting at 4/1 after a close Listowel finish. Keep to the stated price limits rather than chasing a shorter quote.
