The Rowley Mile's autumn juveniles do not offer a single neat puzzle. Some have shown enough to be judged by what they have done; others are being priced on what they might become. My preference is to pay for evidence where possible, especially when rain threatens to make an unfamiliar test more demanding. Proposal is the NAP in the older fillies' handicap, while the nurseries offer two longer-priced runners with specific ground and finishing credentials.

The official Newmarket fixture is Copybet Two-Year-Old Day, with six juvenile races and the fillies' handicap. Today's Racing Post card confirms seven races from 13:50 to 17:20. Newmarket gets the lead on an ordinary day because its Class 2 Future Stayers nursery is backed by a stronger supporting class profile than Kempton's evening programme. There is no Pattern race being implied by that judgement.

Good to soft is the current going, with 55 active runners on the refreshed declarations. That is the starting description, not a prediction of what the surface will be by the last race. The Met Office Newmarket forecast, updated at 07:43 BST, shows rain during racing, temperatures around 9°C to 11°C and strengthening wind. Horses with credible testing-ground form deserve attention, but forecast rain must not be reported as a completed going change.

Prices are current sportsbook quotes checked on the live Oddschecker Newmarket grids, with the exact race check times below. Only the stated each-way concessions should be assumed. Recheck non-runners and offers before betting. No numerical draw bias or rail adjustment is claimed without current evidence. Newmarket 13:50 | No Bet

A restricted fillies novice with so much unraced material is a poor place to confuse a promising pedigree with a betting edge. Cinematically has a useful balance of speed and stamina on paper, being by Showcasing from a Galileo mare, but that cannot tell us how readily she will handle a first race on this surface. Present Dream and Beedazaal bring their own breeding interest without the evidence of a public run.

Fear The Dark has had an outing, but finishing fifth, beaten nine and a half lengths over a mile at Kempton, does not provide a strong enough foundation for a wager here. Shortening the trip could help her travel; it could equally expose a shortage of early speed. Neither possibility deserves to be treated as established fact.

I would rather watch the starts, the way these fillies move through the middle of the race and how they respond when asked to lengthen. Those details may prove useful next time. At the present prices, the unanswered questions outweigh the attraction. No Bet.

Newmarket 14:25 | Brave Country

Back Brave Country: 2pt win at 5/1, Bet365, PricedUp.

Brave Country is worth supporting because the relevant evidence is already there. His debut came over seven furlongs on soft ground at Haydock, where he was too enthusiastic early but still finished second, three and a quarter lengths behind the winner. He did not win the race, yet he showed enough to suggest that learning to relax could make a material difference.

That is a more persuasive argument than expecting improvement simply because this is his second start. Energy spent fighting restraint is energy unavailable at the business end. If he settles better, his closing effort should become more effective, and today's forecast makes his experience of a testing surface particularly useful. Ed Walker has Kieran Shoemark booked.

There are objections. Five-runner novice races can turn tactical, and a slow early tempo might encourage the same keenness. El Waabil was a respectable third at Redcar after meeting traffic, while Enactment is a newcomer for a yard capable of having one ready. Brave Country is not being backed as the finished article. He is being backed at a price that allows for a sensible, identifiable improvement. 9/2 is my floor.

Minimum acceptable price: 9/2.

Newmarket 15:00 | Henrik Ibsen

Back Henrik Ibsen: 2pt win at 3/1, General.

The appeal of Henrik Ibsen is that he has already had to negotiate the distance. He finished fourth, beaten four lengths, over ten furlongs at Goodwood on debut. A slow start made that introduction less straightforward than it might have been, and he was still sufficiently involved to emerge with a useful starting point.

There is no need to turn that into a hard-luck story. He was beaten and did not finish with irresistible force. The betting case is narrower: a more professional beginning and the benefit of that run could bring him closer, while his sire Stradivarius provides a sound stamina reference for another race at this trip. John and Thady Gosden have James Doyle riding him.

Future Role is a significant newcomer from Charlie Appleby's yard, but his short price asks us to buy considerable promise before seeing him race. Amico Mio showed early speed at Kempton and needs to improve after weakening; Falcon Fly also has work to do on his Doncaster introduction. The softer surface remains unproven for Henrik Ibsen, so I want 3/1, not a shorter quote dressed up as the same opportunity.

Minimum acceptable price: 3/1.

Newmarket 15:35 | Akaraka

Back Akaraka: 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, Bet365, Betfred, 3 places.

Akaraka has improved since being given time to find his feet over longer distances. A second over a mile at Thirsk was followed by third, beaten a length and a half, over ten furlongs at Nottingham. Both efforts came on good to soft ground. That is a rather more useful foundation for this afternoon than a general promise that a juvenile might stay.

He remains on 72, the mark from which he ran so well at Nottingham, and carries 124lb. Ryan Moore takes over for Michael Bell. The rider booking is a practical detail rather than the reason for the bet; the unchanged rating and the way the horse has been finishing are the reasons. He can be ridden to work his way into the race rather than being asked to win it in the opening furlong.

Lots Road was impressive when making all at Goodwood and must be respected, but Highland Girl has also raced forward and Noble Prince can hold a position. An honest tempo would suit Akaraka's strengths. There is still a risk that a better-treated improver gets first run, and he has not yet won. At 11/1, with three places verified at the named firms, the balance supports an each-way bet. Do not take less than 10/1.

Minimum acceptable price: 10/1.

Newmarket 16:10 | Proposal

Back Proposal: 2pt win at 11/4, General.

Proposal makes the strongest appeal on the card at her price. She was second over seven furlongs at Thirsk on good to soft ground in September, beaten a length and a quarter, and her earlier fifth over a mile at Goodwood amounted to a two-length defeat rather than a distant finish. Her mark remains 77.

That gives her a workable opening against fillies with more weight to carry. She has 122lb allotted, compared with 134lb for Luna Celeste, and the return to a mile can give her more time to use the finish she showed at Thirsk. William Haggas has Tom Marquand booked. This is a weight-and-form case, not a claim that the stable combination makes the result inevitable.

The danger to the argument is the race shape. A small field can become a short acceleration contest, and Proposal does not want to give a well-positioned leader too much rope. Luna Celeste has been progressing, while Harlequin Breeze has front-running form to draw upon if ready after her break. Proposal also returns from 46 days away. Those qualifications are why 11/4 is the minimum acceptable price. At that quote, she is the NAP.

Minimum acceptable price: 11/4.

Newmarket 16:45 | No Bet

The market contains plenty of expectation and very little tested evidence among the newcomers. Al Lahbab represents Charlie Appleby, Mawrid William Haggas and Manolin Andrew Balding. Those are proper reasons to pay attention. They are not, on their own, reasons to declare a particular price generous.

The mile and forecast rain add two questions that have not been answered in public. A pedigree can point towards stamina or ground aptitude, but it cannot show how a juvenile will break, settle or respond when the race becomes competitive. Vega's Mirage is also making a first start and requires the same caution rather than dismissal simply because of a bigger price.

I can see how several of these could become useful horses. What I cannot establish is which newcomer has been underestimated enough to justify a bet this morning. This is a genuine No Bet, not an attempt to make a weak case sound restrained. Watch the race and use what it tells us afterwards.

Newmarket 17:20 | Wolf Bay

Back Wolf Bay: 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, General, 5 places.

Wolf Bay earned his place in the argument by finishing second at Haydock over seven furlongs on heavy ground. He was squeezed for room early, worked his way into the race and went down by two and a quarter lengths. That followed a second at Windsor, so there is a developing thread of useful form rather than one isolated flash.

The handicapper has moved him from 78 to 79, a modest adjustment, and Harry Vigors can claim 5lb from his 129lb allotted weight. The important point is not to treat an apprentice allowance as a free gift. It gives him a favourable weight position if the rider can deliver the same patient, effective ride that this sort of large-field nursery requires.

There is depth here. Crowned has won twice on the all-weather but is now rated 78, compared with 65 for his latest win. Whiskey Bent has winning form on very soft ground in France, and Washington Royale has been finishing as though seven furlongs could help. Wolf Bay has the more direct recent evidence for today's trip on testing turf.

He remains a maiden and cannot afford to be trapped behind weakening horses. Nevertheless, 12/1 with five places is a fair return for those risks. The ground is an argument in his favour rather than an excuse prepared in advance. Keep the price at 10/1 or bigger and check that the full place concession remains available.

Minimum acceptable price: 10/1.

Best bets of the day

Proposal earns the NAP because the unchanged mark, low allotted weight and recent good-to-soft second give a coherent handicap case. Akaraka has already run well over ten furlongs on the forecast type of surface. Wolf Bay supplies a recent seven-furlong heavy-ground performance and a realistic weight argument in the closing nursery. These are separate cases, not a single theory applied indiscriminately.
