Ayr's Gold Cup Festival reaches its finale with the £180,000 heritage handicap at its centre, supported by the Group 3 Firth Of Clyde, the Listed Doonside Cup and the 25-runner Silver Cup. The scale of the straight-course handicaps makes price and place cover as important as identifying the likeliest winner. I have therefore built the card around one strong novice, three progressive or well-treated win candidates and four each-way runners whose terms properly match the risk. Our horse-racing tips approach treats the market price as part of the selection rather than an afterthought.

The official going was soft, good to soft in places, with a GoingStick reading of 7.4 and light rain showers in the forecast. Seven races and 100 active runners were checked against the refreshed Racing API cards and the signed-in Oddschecker Ayr markets at 08:05-08:08 BST. Nour, Montezin and Imperial Guard were listed as non-runners. Prices and the draw picture can still change before racing. Ayr 13:20 | McMurray | 2pt win at 9/2, Unibet

NEXT BEST: Spoken Truth

The opener asks whether proven recent handicappers can stop a lightly raced improver. Northern Express is dependable at Ayr and Thunder Roar is capable when the race falls his way, but both have had several chances from comparable marks. McMurray has won four of his last five and returns from a break with the shape of a horse who has not reached his ceiling. His 135-day absence and a career-high mark are genuine reservations, although the soft surface should make this less of a speed test than a tactical mile. At 9/2 with Unibet, the price compensates for the fitness uncertainty and makes him the value selection. Spoken Truth is the clearest alternative at 9/2 after winning last time; she has tactical pace, stays the mile and should get first run on the deeper closers. She is more exposed than McMurray, which is why she remains the next best rather than the main bet.

NEXT BEST: Fast Tracker

This is a better race than the field size suggests. Ecureuil Secret has the back class but returns from 420 days away, and Grey Cuban arrives after a useful second without having much in hand of the principals. Ice Max owns the highest official rating, is drawn to save ground and has repeatedly shown that rain-softened conditions suit him. His 106-day break requires trust, yet the market offers 4/1 with William Hill and Unibet, a fairer price than his ratings chance implies. Fast Tracker, available at 16/5, is the danger. His recent third confirms his wellbeing and he is entitled to close again, but the market gives less allowance for his slightly lower rating and the stable's quiet fortnight. Ice Max is preferred as a win bet in a race where enhanced place terms do not change the basic value judgement.

VERDICT: Ice Max, 2pt win at 4/1, William Hill and Unibet. Back only at 7/2 or bigger; Fast Tracker is the next best at 16/5.

Ayr 14:30 | Trilby | 1pt e/w at 10/1, Bet365, 6 places

NEXT BEST: Deep Havana

The Silver Cup is exactly the race in which a good place concession has practical value. Deep Havana brings the strongest recent sequence and is a deserved 13/2 next best, while Commanche Falls is well treated on older form and Toyotomi has attracted support. I prefer Trilby, whose recent win and second show that he is thriving and whose previous experience of soft ground removes one major doubt. Stall 23 is not automatically a gift, because the pace can migrate across the track, but Tom Marquand can follow the high-drawn speed rather than make an isolated move. Bet365's 10/1 with six places is a better bet than taking one point more for only five places. Deep Havana remains the obvious threat, though a penalty and a much shorter price leave less margin if his busy sequence finally catches up with him.

VERDICT: Trilby, 1pt e/w at 10/1, Bet365, 6 places. Back only at 9/1 or bigger; Deep Havana is the next best at 13/2.

Ayr 15:05 | Etonnante | 1pt e/w at 7/1, General, 3 places

NEXT BEST: Silent Beauty

Silent Beauty is the form anchor after winning two of three and she merits next-best status at 2/1, but this Group 3 contains enough lightly raced fillies to make that price look tight. Dark Issue has the official rating to feature and Ruby Moon can improve on her York run. Etonnante is the more interesting bet at 7/1, General. She responded to a quiet ride to win last time, has already absorbed the educational value of one defeat and retains scope after only three starts. Her current figure leaves something to find with the market leader, but two wins from three suggest that the bare rating may not define her. Three places are available across the permitted market. Silent Beauty is the likeliest winner, while Etonnante is the better price-led play.

VERDICT: Etonnante, 1pt e/w at 7/1, General, 3 places. Back only at 13/2 or bigger; Silent Beauty is the next best at 2/1.

NEXT BEST: Binhareer

The Gold Cup has a worthy favourite in Binhareer, who is available at 4/1 and retains the upside of a lightly raced sprinter. That price is short enough in a 25-runner handicap where traffic can undo the best horse. Fine Interview is the alternative I want. His seventh last time came in a race that did not erase the promise of earlier wins, and the return to a searching six furlongs on soft ground should play to his ability to finish rather than merely travel. Stall 25 gives James Doyle a decision, but there is enough pace high to provide cover. Bet365 offer 9/1 and six places, a combination that is more attractive than the shorter quotes elsewhere. Fine Interview must rebound from two subdued efforts, so this is an each-way judgement rather than a claim of certainty. Binhareer's class and progressive profile make him the proper next best.

VERDICT: Fine Interview, 1pt e/w at 9/1, Bet365, 6 places. Back only at 8/1 or bigger; Binhareer is the next best at 4/1.

Ayr 16:15 | Amir Lehbab | 3pt win at 6/4, General

NEXT BEST: Rogue Constelation

This novice is the day's clearest case for siding with evidence over conjecture. Amir Lehbab improved from third to second on his first two starts, owns an official rating of 82 and now has Oisin Murphy to organise him against five newcomers. Soft ground still asks a new question, but he has shown professionalism and should not need the race to collapse. 6/4, General is acceptable and makes him the NAP. Rogue Constelation is the most interesting newcomer at 11/4, with a market position that suggests readiness, although backing an unraced colt at that price requires information the public formbook cannot supply. Gold Key has two runs of experience and is respected, but Amir Lehbab sets a tangible standard and has the fewest assumptions attached.

VERDICT: Amir Lehbab, 3pt win at 6/4, General. Back only at 5/4 or bigger; Rogue Constelation is the next best at 11/4.

Ayr 16:50 | Classy Clarets | 1pt e/w at 9/1, Bet365 and Unibet, 4 places

NEXT BEST: Sailthisshipalone

The closer brings together several horses in form, notably Cotai Belle, Quest For Fun and Sailthisshipalone, the latter available at 9/2 after scoring recently. His very quick return is both a sign of wellbeing and a possible vulnerability. Classy Clarets has the more compelling price at 9/1 with Bet365 and Unibet, four places. He has won four of his last six, including last time, and his uncomplicated way of racing should keep him out of the worst traffic. The handicapper is now asking a much harder question and stall 12 could force him to work early, but the double-figure winning sequence is more persuasive than a single low model figure. Sailthisshipalone is the next best on immediate form; Classy Clarets is the value play.

Best bets of the day

Amir Lehbab is the NAP because his improving two-run profile supplies the most reliable evidence in a novice dominated by newcomers. McMurray is the next best of the day at 9/2, with a progressive sequence that gives him more potential than most of the exposed mile handicappers. The principal big-field angles are Trilby with six places in the Silver Cup and Fine Interview with the same cover in the Gold Cup, while Classy Clarets supplies the closing-card value.
