Naas closes its Flat season with two Listed races, a valuable juvenile auction final and a staying handicap that will make stamina count. The official meeting information and today's card give this fixture the strongest black-type programme of Sunday's British and Irish meetings. Goodwood and Chepstow have worthwhile handicaps, but neither has a Listed or Pattern race today.
Soft ground is the working assumption, not an excuse to turn every exposed stayer into a betting proposition. I want evidence that a horse can sustain its effort, a plausible position in the race and a price that leaves room for what might go wrong. The two Listed contests present different problems: the Garnet opens a route for a continental performer at a generous price, while the Bluebell offers a recent Group-race contender a less demanding grade.
There are eight races and 107 original declarations, with 105 active runners after Seven Nation Army and Mawhibah were withdrawn. The Met Éireann forecast allows for cloud and patchy rain spreading northeastwards, so later conditions should be checked rather than assumed unchanged. Naas is left-handed with a demanding finish; no reliable same-day statistical draw advantage is being claimed. Prices in the official tables were checked through the Oddschecker race grids at 09:58 Europe/London. They are snapshots, not guaranteed offers; further withdrawals can change both prices and terms.

Naas 13:20 | Ita Florence | 2pt win at 4/1, bet365
Back Ita Florence: 2pt win at 4/1, bet365.
There is a temptation to treat every juvenile maiden as an exercise in identifying the best-known stable. That is an expensive habit when the favourite has already had several opportunities. Ita Florence is a more interesting proposition at 4/1 because her first appearance gave her plenty to learn without closing the door on improvement.
At Gowran Park she was slow into stride, raced keenly and made her progress late over seven furlongs. Sixth, beaten nine and a half lengths, is not compelling form on its own. The case rests on how much less wasteful she can be with that experience behind her. Seamie Heffernan has stall one, and a cleaner beginning should allow him to find cover rather than spend the first half of the race repairing damage.
The objections are substantial: she is dropping in trip and has not yet proved herself on soft ground. Film Set has the experience of a Group 3, but being beaten nearly sixteen lengths there does not make a short price attractive automatically. Formous also has to improve markedly on a disappointing debut and starts wider. Jim Bolger's two winners from six runners in the API's recent fortnight are encouraging, though much too small a sample to turn a possibility into a certainty. I want 7/2 or better for Ita Florence's scope to improve.
Verdict
Ita Florence: 2pt win at 4/1, bet365. Minimum 7/2.
Naas 13:56 | No Bet | No Bet
No Bet. This is a race in which the shape of the market tells us rather more than the public form of most of the runners. Five of the eight are newcomers, while the favourite is trading at odds-on. There is little attraction in paying to discover whether the debutants can cope with soft ground, a searching final furlong and their first experience of competitive racing.
Major Triumph has an obvious stable connection, but that is not evidence of how ready he is. Scolyer's Golden Pal pedigree suggests speed without answering the ground question. Waysong offers another unknown rather than a reliable yardstick. Of those with racecourse experience, One Flash was well held in a heavy-ground Curragh maiden and Rejoinder did not advertise an imminent win on his only start.
One of the newcomers may improve the picture dramatically in the paddock or on the track. That does not make the current prices an invitation to guess. I would rather watch the race, learn which horses travel and handle the surface, and keep the stake for an occasion when the evidence is less lopsided.
Verdict
No Bet. The current evidence does not justify a wager.
Naas 14:30 | Whosinterviewinwho | 2pt win at 5/1, Ladbrokes
Back Whosinterviewinwho: 2pt win at 5/1, Ladbrokes.
The auction final asks a rather different question from an ordinary nursery. The weights matter, but they are not a conventional handicap invitation to compare official ratings alone. Whosinterviewinwho, carrying 8st 13lb, has recent evidence at both six and seven furlongs and looks reasonably treated by the terms of this particular contest.
His Cork second on yielding to soft ground was a useful recovery from a poor Down Royal effort. He was ridden patiently, made his challenge late and finished one and three-quarter lengths behind the winner. Earlier, at Galway over seven furlongs, he had been beaten only three-quarters of a length. Those two performances are more useful to today's argument than pretending the unplaced run between them never happened.
The likely tempo helps. Banks Of The Boyne and Revelator have gone forward, while The Scallionator is another capable of making the running. I would prefer Andrew Slattery to find a rhythm just behind that contest rather than join it. The Scallionator's official rating makes him important to the race, although his latest ninth leaves a question; Dawnmore is turning out only three days after finishing second at Thurles. Our horse still has to settle and show the Cork revival was genuine. 5/1 with Ladbrokes leaves room for those reservations; below 9/2, the argument becomes thinner.
Verdict
Whosinterviewinwho: 2pt win at 5/1, Ladbrokes. Minimum 9/2.
Naas 15:05 | Queen's Reign | 0.5pt e/w at 20/1, Sky Bet, 4 places
Back Queen's Reign: 0.5pt e/w at 20/1, Sky Bet, 4 places.
The Garnet is the sort of Listed race in which recent continental form can sit quietly behind more familiar names. Queen's Reign was third of thirteen at Baden-Baden on 1 September, beaten a length over seven furlongs on soft ground. That is a considerably more relevant piece of evidence than her price of 20/1 might suggest.
She has already run well at a mile, and the additional furlong here gives Kieran Shoemark time to organise her challenge. Stall ten is not a gift, but it is manageable if she can follow the runners drawn nearer the pace rather than be committed wide without cover. A genuinely run race would make this a test of sustained effort, which is a more persuasive route for her than hoping to outsprint sharper rivals from a standstill.
There are limits to the case. She has not won a Listed race, and returning to Ireland does not make overseas form perfectly transferable. Glyfada brings improving spring form but returns from a long break, while Rebel Wave has won her last three and could still be climbing. Drop Dead Gorgeous has course experience without an especially convincing recent record. I am not treating our mare as the likeliest winner; I am treating 20/1 and four places with Sky Bet as an acceptable price for an established level of ability. The floor is 18/1, with the place offer intact.
Verdict
Queen's Reign: 0.5pt e/w at 20/1, Sky Bet, 4 places. Minimum 18/1 with the stated place terms.
Naas 15:40 | In My Teens | 2pt win at 7/2, General
Back In My Teens: 2pt win at 7/2, General.
In My Teens gets the NAP in the Bluebell because the race offers a sensible opportunity to distinguish a disappointing finishing position from a poor performance. Eighth at Leopardstown is uninviting in isolation. Being beaten four and a quarter lengths in Group 3 company is a rather less alarming description, especially when today's race is a Listed contest.
Her Curragh win in the Ragusa Premier Handicap over a mile and a half in June establishes her effectiveness at the trip, not Group-winning status. She moved through that race and finished strongly. The more relevant class evidence is her recent competitive Group 3 margin, supported by an official rating of 108. That makes this Listed opportunity interesting without assuming a handicap win guarantees success at this level. The unpenalised 9st 7lb is useful against the penalised older mare at the head of the market. Timeform's free card has her on 117, corroboration rather than a substitute for that form reading.
The wide draw, sixteen, is the principal tactical nuisance. Wayne Lordan must avoid allowing early keenness to become a costly wide trip, and the softer surface remains a different test from her summer win. Caught U Sleeping has recent soft-ground Listed form and Chablis Rock ran well at Galway; neither can be dismissed. Even so, 7/2 looks generous enough about the proven class of In My Teens. I would still be interested at 3/1, but would not follow a contraction indefinitely.
Verdict
In My Teens: 2pt win at 7/2, General. Minimum 3/1.
Naas 16:15 | Madbadanddangerous | 1pt e/w at 9/1, bet365, 5 places
Back Madbadanddangerous: 1pt e/w at 9/1, bet365, 5 places.
The Beggar's End is a proper staying handicap, with several runners arriving through the Irish Cesarewitch and others bringing the very different evidence of a recent jumping campaign. My preference is to place more weight on an effort over a comparable Flat distance than on the bare fact that a horse has been winning over obstacles.
Madbadanddangerous finished fourth of thirty over two miles and a furlong on heavy ground at the Curragh. He was still only eighth two furlongs out and kept finding through the closing stages, eventually beaten two and a quarter lengths. The mark remains 96, and the three-year-old allowance leaves him on 9st 6lb. That is a tangible foundation for another competitive effort rather than an argument built on an imagined improvement.
The poor Leopardstown run before that is a warning against calling him reliable in every circumstance. Noel Meade's recent API figures, one winner from twenty-eight runners, are another reason not to get carried away. Comfort Zone has a strong staying record and a substantial weight; Shoda was close behind our selection at the Curragh and has a useful claim. Putapoundinthejar has been progressing over fences, but translating that into a competitive Flat performance is its own question. 9/1, with five places at bet365, is sufficient compensation for the uncertainty. I want at least 8/1 and the same place concession.
Verdict
Madbadanddangerous: 1pt e/w at 9/1, bet365, 5 places. Minimum 8/1 with the stated place terms.
Naas 16:50 | Love Orchid | 2pt win at 13/2, General
Back Love Orchid: 2pt win at 13/2, General.
An apprentice handicap on soft ground can punish horses that travel too freely as thoroughly as it punishes inexperienced handling. Love Orchid has a fair body of staying form and a manageable weight, which may be a more dependable starting point than a dramatic revival from one of the better-known exposed runners.
She was beaten only a neck at Tramore in August and followed that with third at Navan over a mile and six furlongs. The Listowel sixth was less persuasive, although she came from a long way back and made some late ground. This shorter trip is not an obvious improvement on paper. The hope is that softer ground and a proper pace place enough emphasis on stamina to keep her in the race.
Nina Doherty takes off four pounds, but a claim is not free money: judgement of pace and finding a clear run will matter more than the arithmetic if the field bunches. Pure Granite can go forward, and Killyclogher Rose has a course-and-distance success worth remembering, albeit followed by two weaker efforts. Senna's Girl has recent form on very soft ground without having proved this extra distance. Love Orchid's unchanged mark of 64 and 13/2 price give her a workable chance. I would draw the line at 6/1 rather than pay simply for the claim.
Verdict
Love Orchid: 2pt win at 13/2, General. Minimum 6/1.
Naas 17:25 | Vanir | 2pt win at 5/1, BetMGM
Back Vanir: 2pt win at 5/1, BetMGM.
Vanir can finish the afternoon well if she builds on her Down Royal second. She had to wait for room on the rail before getting out and finishing three-quarters of a length behind the winner over a mile and five furlongs. The run was a useful reminder that the finishing margin need not measure the whole effort.
Her July Fairyhouse maiden win over a mile and a half shows that she can finish a race rather than merely travel through it. The official mark has risen two pounds to 86, so there is no windfall from the handicapper, but a three-year-old with that relatively lightly raced profile is entitled to progress. Ben Coen has stall five and should have options, preferably finding cover while the pace develops.
The reservation is today's combination of a shorter trip and softer ground. Neither should be waved away as automatically helpful. Navy Waters was short of room in the same Down Royal race, while Ankara also ran creditably there; the common form line makes both meaningful opponents. Fratas needs to turn useful jumping form into a better Flat effort, and Morgana Blue returns from a lengthy break for a new yard. At 5/1 with BetMGM, Vanir offers enough scope for improvement to justify the interest. The minimum is 4/1, not a promise to back her at any price.
Verdict
Vanir: 2pt win at 5/1, BetMGM. Minimum 4/1.
Best bets of the day
In My Teens is the NAP: proven Group 3 ability is a more substantial argument than the bare eighth beside her latest run. Queen's Reign offers the more speculative Listed-race angle, supported by a recent soft-ground placing rather than an imagined return to old form. Madbadanddangerous brings the most relevant recent stamina evidence to his handicap. All three can be beaten, and the prices are part of the recommendation, not decoration.
