A Listed race gives Bath its place at the head of today's racing, but the strongest betting argument comes from a horse returning to familiar ground before his higher mark catches up with him. Oman has the clearest handicap opportunity. In the feature, I am prepared to oppose the shortest price with Pierian, whose recent course win gives the argument something firmer than a hope that a favourite fails.

There are also prices worth considering in the staying opener and the sprint handicaps. The recurring question is whether a horse can reproduce the part of its recent form that matters here: stamina rather than an eye-catching position, a sustained finish rather than early speed, or a course win rather than an untested promise. The objections are part of the price, not details to hide.

The current Bath card comprises nine races, including the Arabian closer, with 101 original declarations and 94 active runners after seven withdrawals. The Listed Beckford Stakes makes this a stronger principal fixture than the ordinary handicap programmes at Southwell and Ayr. The going is Good. The Met Office's racecourse forecast suggests a largely dry afternoon, with cloud increasing and rain more likely later in the evening. Recheck the official going before racing rather than assuming an unchanged surface.

The rail movements add five yards to the opener, Beckford Stakes, mile novice and both ten-furlong thoroughbred handicaps. Sprints and the opener use the centre stalls; the other thoroughbred races use the inside setting. This is a tactical assessment, not a claim of a quantified draw bias. Prices were checked on the live Oddschecker grids at 09:53 BST and can change. Withdrawals are shown explicitly in the runner reference work. 18+ only. Bet within a pre-set affordable limit; no selection is certain to win.

Bath 13:30 | Individualiste | 1pt e/w at 10/1, Sky Bet, 4 places

Back Individualiste: 1pt e/w at 10/1, Sky Bet, 4 places.

Your Elite Club Handicap Stakes, 2m1f24y.

NEXT BEST: Merrijig at 9/2

The opener has lost Fram Castle, and that matters more than the attraction of several handicap debut narratives. I prefer a runner who has recently demonstrated that he can stay and compete. Individualiste made a long, wide move into the lead at Wolverhampton nine days ago and was only caught late, finishing a length second. Holding that challenge a little longer looks a practical route to improvement, not a request for a completely new horse.

His unchanged mark of 50 and Rose Dawes's 3lb claim keep the weight manageable. The reservation is important: this is turf, and the latest revival came on the all-weather after two much weaker efforts. I would not follow him into a short price. 10/1 with Sky Bet's 4 places gives enough room for that uncertainty and makes him my strongest handicap value angle.

Merrijig is the alternative at 9/2. His Pontefract fourth over this sort of distance is a sound stamina reference and he is 2lb lower. He has, however, been weakening late rather than finishing with authority. Pacific Storm has possible handicap improvement but three large novice defeats, while Al's River's Nottingham third was eleven lengths behind the winner. Those are plausible chances, not compelling reasons to accept a much shorter price.

Verdict

Individualiste, 1pt e/w at 10/1, Sky Bet, 4 places. Minimum 8/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Merrijig at 9/2 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 14:05 | Casting Coach | 2pt win at 7/2, General

Back Casting Coach: 2pt win at 7/2, General.

EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (GBB Race), 5f10y.

NEXT BEST: Kerry Grey at 9/2

Casting Coach had the Pontefract race almost won before the final part of six furlongs caught her out. She opened a two-length lead and was beaten only half a length into third. Today she has a furlong less to negotiate, which is a straightforward reason to think the debut can be converted into a win. It is not necessary to describe her as unlucky; she used herself too freely and paid for it late.

That is also the strongest objection. If Stevie Donohoe cannot get her to relax, the shorter trip may simply compress the same waste of energy into less time. Urumita and Blackberry Bold can provide a target rather than allowing another self-made contest. At 7/2, I think the price accommodates the settling question.

Kerry Grey, a length third at Wolverhampton, is my next best at 9/2. She finished with purpose after shifting left and should understand more about racing now. Go Go Girl has the in-form Cox yard and Rossa Ryan in her favour, but her Windsor third still leaves improvement to find and she has shortened to 5/2. Chanter Le Blues has credible debut form too, although a lengthy absence makes immediate sharpness harder to judge.

Verdict

Casting Coach, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Minimum 3/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Kerry Grey at 9/2 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 14:40 | Little Jaybee | 1pt e/w at 15/2, General, 4 places

Back Little Jaybee: 1pt e/w at 15/2, General, 4 places.

Mda Consulting Ltd Handicap Stakes, 5f10y.

NEXT BEST: Pedros Dream at 5/1

The five-furlong handicap has enough speed in it to make chasing the first horse out of the stalls an expensive habit. Little Jaybee has the more appealing recent sequence: narrow seconds at Ffos Las and Lingfield, followed by a Wolverhampton win. The turf second matters because it prevents the latest success becoming an all-weather-only argument. A 3lb rise is not negligible, but it is much less intimidating than the form suggests at first glance.

Edward Greatrex must get the timing right from stall one. An economical trip can become a prison when the pace begins to weaken, and that is the main reason not to become overconfident. The available 15/2, with 4 places at Unibet, Ladbrokes, Betway and Coral, still offers a fair exchange for the risk.

Pedros Dream is the strongest alternative at 5/1. He missed the Windsor start and finished strongly into second, from the same mark as today. A competent break could put him much closer. Jojo Rabbit's Catterick win deserves respect, but he was beaten at Pontefract three days ago and carries an extra 4lb. Savannah Smiles had genuine traffic trouble here; she is interesting, without displacing the more consistent selection.

Verdict

Little Jaybee, 1pt e/w at 15/2, General, 4 places. Minimum 7/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Pedros Dream at 5/1 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 15:15 | Pierian | 2pt win at 4/1, General

Back Pierian: 2pt win at 4/1, General.

British Stallion Studs EBF Beckford Stakes (Listed Race) (GBBPlus Race), 1m6f.

NEXT BEST: Brilliant Star at 7/4

The Beckford Stakes is why Bath leads the day. It offers a proper Listed examination, and Brilliant Star brings the best individual piece of form through her Ribblesdale fourth. I would not argue otherwise. The question is whether that June performance, followed by 112 days away and a first tongue-tie, deserves to dominate the price of a race over a longer distance. Her tendency to race keenly makes that an uncomfortable assumption.

Pierian offers a different kind of evidence. She won comfortably here in September after recovering from a slow start, travels into this race with recent fitness, and can obtain a sensible position behind Venetia from stall four. Her Goodwood defeat included trouble for room, so it is not a reason to discard the progress shown on the next visit to Bath. At 4/1, she is my next best of the day.

There is a clear limitation: her rating of 93 leaves nine pounds to find with Brilliant Star, and fourteen furlongs is a new stamina question. I am backing potential improvement and race readiness, not pretending she already has the favourite's class. Brilliant Star at 7/4 is the independent alternative. Venetia is dangerous if allowed to dictate, although her penalty and the extra distance make an extravagant early lead less attractive.

Verdict

Pierian, 2pt win at 4/1, General. Minimum 7/2. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Brilliant Star at 7/4 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 15:50 | Grapple | 1pt e/w at 8/1, Sky Bet, 4 places

Back Grapple: 1pt e/w at 8/1, Sky Bet, 4 places.

Seat Unique EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (For Horses In Bands C And D) (GBB/GBBPlus Race), 1m.

NEXT BEST: Aethelstan Gold at 5/4

There is much to like about Aethelstan Gold, who was green at Windsor before rallying for third over a mile. Experience is likely to improve him and he is the strongest alternative. At 5/4, though, the market has already spent a considerable amount of that improvement on his behalf.

I would rather take Grapple, the one runner here with a completed win. His Salisbury success was a large advance on the Newbury debut: he moved into contention, took over two furlongs out and asserted late. The extra furlong looks a reasonable development for that finishing pattern, and stall five gives William Carver an opportunity to secure an economical position without having to cross the field.

The objection is repeatability. The win came on soft ground in blinkers after a very poor earlier effort, and today's surface is better. There is also a potentially useful newcomer in Mystic Shadow, representing the in-form Beckett yard. I want a price that respects those unknowns. Sky Bet's 8/1 with 4 places is preferable here to the 9/1 quotes paying fewer places, because the concession costs only one point of odds. Galimix is another credible danger, but stall fourteen creates work before his late Leicester finish can be deployed.

Verdict

Grapple, 1pt e/w at 8/1, Sky Bet, 4 places. Minimum 8/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Aethelstan Gold at 5/4 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 16:21 | Oman | 2pt win at 7/2, General

Back Oman: 2pt win at 7/2, General.

Find My Hospitality Handicap Stakes (Div I), 1m2f37y.

NEXT BEST: Condotti at 9/2

The NAP is Oman, because the handicap argument is concrete. He won over this course and distance nine days ago from 68, returns from the same mark, and is due to be 3lb higher in future. Myla Coppins keeps the ride and her 5lb claim. There is no need to borrow an old peak rating or invent a story about a lenient handicapper; today's opportunity is already visible in the current conditions.

His Bath win came from a prominent position before he moved ahead over two furlongs out and sustained the effort. Condotti can go forward from stall one, and Crimson Road has tactical speed too, so I would prefer Oman to track them rather than make a point of winning the lead. 7/2 leaves sufficient margin for a more contested race than last time.

Condotti, at 9/2, is the next best. A Haydock win after a narrow Chester second is a strong recent sequence, and a 2lb rise is restrained. Albus Anne's close Salisbury third gives her a real chance, but that revival came on soft ground after two weaker mile efforts. Crimson Road's Nottingham interference deserves allowance, yet he remains on the higher mark which followed his winning run. Oman has the clearest combination of current form, course evidence and today's weight position.

Verdict

Oman, 2pt win at 7/2, General. Minimum 3/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Condotti at 9/2 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 16:55 | Sweet Horizon | 2pt win at 4/1, General

Back Sweet Horizon: 2pt win at 4/1, General.

Find My Hospitality Handicap Stakes (Div II), 1m2f37y.

NEXT BEST: Zambezi Magic at 7/2

The second division is a more tentative betting race, but Sweet Horizon still has the profile I would rather buy at 4/1. Four starts leave room for improvement, his Nottingham second supplies a useful ten-furlong reference, and the handicapper has eased him 2lb after his Sandown fifth. Tom Clover's six winners from seventeen recent runners are encouragement, not a replacement for the horse's own form.

Blinkers may sharpen his concentration and Jack Mitchell can aim for a position close enough to Boy George and Ablon to avoid chasing a sudden sprint. The Sandown run is the strongest objection: he made some ground before flattening out, so the assessment needs a better finish, not merely a lower number beside his name.

Zambezi Magic, at 7/2, is the credible alternative. His Chepstow and Ffos Las wins around the Chester run show that he is currently delivering, and the 7lb claim helps with the latest 4lb rise. Better ground is less clearly in his favour than the softer surfaces of those victories. Eutropia's earlier close third has appeal, but two subsequent weak efforts are hard to ignore. Sweet Horizon gets the preference through possible progress, not through a claim that the race is weak enough to win by default.

Verdict

Sweet Horizon, 2pt win at 4/1, General. Minimum 7/2. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Zambezi Magic at 7/2 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 17:25 | Moe's Legacy | 1pt e/w at 8/1, bet365, 4 places

Back Moe's Legacy: 1pt e/w at 8/1, bet365, 4 places.

Mj Church Fillies' Handicap Stakes, 5f160y.

NEXT BEST: Courageous Sioux at 3/1

Moe's Legacy is not a hidden handicap certainty. She carries a 5lb penalty for the recent course-and-distance win, taking her effective mark to 77, and anyone working from the unadjusted 72 is understating the task. That is the objection to put first, because the bet only makes sense when it is honestly priced.

What remains attractive is the way she won here, making a sustained wide challenge and continuing strongly. Today's pace horses should provide another target, Jason Watson retains the ride, and course aptitude has direct evidential value. The earlier 10/1 has gone. I am willing to take 8/1 with 4 places at bet365, but not to follow the move any further. The enhanced terms are worth preferring to the best 17/2 quote paying fewer places.

Courageous Sioux, now 3/1, is the next best on race merit. She has won both starts for Clive Cox, finishing strongly at Southwell, and the extra distance should give her time to organise her challenge. Sound And Vision's latest eighth was only four lengths behind at Goodwood, while Court Drive has an excellent recent sequence. Both are dangers. Moe's Legacy remains the price-led choice, with the penalty plainly acknowledged rather than wished away.

Verdict

Moe's Legacy, 1pt e/w at 8/1, bet365, 4 places. Minimum 8/1. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Courageous Sioux at 3/1 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Bath 17:55 | Zizania Du Mazet | 3pt win at 5/4, Unibet

Back Zizania Du Mazet: 3pt win at 5/4, Unibet.

Spillers ULCA Fibre Handicap Stakes (0-55) - Arab Race, 1m2f.

NEXT BEST: Pharitz Lahia at 7/2

The meeting does not end with the fillies' sprint. There is a five-runner Arabian handicap at 17:55, and it deserves its own assessment rather than being silently omitted from the card. Zizania Du Mazet brings the strongest recent winning line, having beaten Zayin Sentinel by half a length at Wolverhampton, with Sassy, Shakura Sky Zayin and Aloof further behind. The official result describes a late challenge which was sustained to the line.

She is 3lb higher now and no longer has the winner's 3lb claim from that occasion. Moving from a mile on the all-weather to ten furlongs on turf adds uncertainty, so the small field is not a reason to call her safe. Jack Mitchell should be able to conserve her effort behind whatever pace is available. At 5/4 with Unibet, I think the winning form remains worth backing.

Pharitz Lahia, at 7/2, is the genuine alternative. Her Bath fourth last week came in a stronger 0-80 contest, and she finished ahead of Sassy. Dropping in class helps, although she now carries more weight than on that occasion. The market is entitled to make the last-time winner favourite, but the course-and-distance evidence of Pharitz Lahia is a reason to retain proper respect for the opposition.

The official August result and September Bath result support those form comparisons.

Verdict

Zizania Du Mazet, 3pt win at 5/4, Unibet. Minimum Evens. Below that price I would pass, not chase. Pharitz Lahia at 7/2 remains the independent alternative, not an additional advised bet.

Best bets of the day

Oman is the NAP, with the unchanged mark and recent course-and-distance win doing the work. Pierian is the next best of the day, a race-fit course winner against a more highly rated favourite with questions to answer. Individualiste is my best handicap value bet, provided the Wolverhampton revival transfers to turf. Little Jaybee's recent consistency is another sound each-way angle. Moe's Legacy is more price-sensitive because the penalty is a genuine burden.
