The two feature chases give Clonmel the day's strongest card, but the most interesting betting arguments lie elsewhere. Smallcraftwarning has been progressing over staying trips, Young Doran has more hurdle substance than his price suggests, and the final two races reward a close look at recent completed form. I am prepared to leave several races alone when the price fails to pay for the uncertainties.
The current card reports good ground over hurdles, good to yielding in places, and good to yielding on the chase course. That distinction matters: the same description should not be applied indiscriminately to every race. The current national forecast predicts cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers, with 9-12C and light to moderate east to northeast winds. It does not justify assuming that Clonmel will receive a particular amount of rain.

Quick race guide
Clonmel is right-handed, with a climb on the far side, a downhill run towards the straight and another rise to the finish. Getting a breather before the closing stages matters more than simply being in front. There is no stall-draw issue on this jumps card.
12:50 - Maiden hurdle, with Lincall withdrawn. 13:25 - Auction and median maiden hurdle, watched without a bet. 14:00 - Three-mile handicap hurdle, where the NAP runs. 14:35 - Listed mares' chase, a watching race. 15:10 - Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase, also No Bet. 15:45 - Large-field handicap chase over the shorter trip. 16:20 - Two-mile bumper.
Clonmel 12:50 | Young Doran
Back Young Doran: 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, Paddy Power, 3 places.
Young Doran is worth an each-way interest at 12/1 in the opening maiden. His hurdle form is more substantial than the price implies. He finished second at Ballinrobe in May and third at Downpatrick in August, and his official mark of 110 gives him a stronger established level than several more exposed runners here. He receives eight pounds from the penalised bumper winner before Ross Sugrue's seven-pound claim is considered. That is a useful concession in a race where the better-known horses still have something to prove.
There is an objection, and it is a significant one: he has not been fluent enough. Several errors interrupted the Downpatrick third, and a peck at the second-last contributed to a disappointing fourth there last month. A sharp right-handed circuit will punish another broken rhythm. The shorter trip can help him keep a handier position without stretching his stamina, but only if his rider gets him settled and jumping economically.
Unflinching has a bumper win and the promise of improvement after one hurdle run, though his absence stretches back to last Christmas. Blue Johnl has experience but was beaten more than 13 lengths here last time. I prefer the price about Young Doran, whose place chance does not depend on a wholesale transformation. Paddy Power offers 12/1 and three places. I would want double figures. Lincall is a non-runner.
Minimum acceptable price: 10/1.
Clonmel 13:25 | No Bet
I am leaving this maiden alone. S T Hamo has enough bumper ability to make his presence felt, particularly his Fairyhouse second in October, but his hurdle debut at Down Royal five days ago exposed the risk of translating that ability. He made a mistake three out and finished a distant third, beaten 47 lengths. This is less demanding company, yet 7/2 asks us to assume a clean and substantial recovery on a very quick return.
Don't Hold Back offers a different sort of uncertainty. His point-to-point background is a starting point, and Paul Nolan has Sean Flanagan booked, but the available record contains no completed rules run to measure. He returns after 221 days with a hood listed. I cannot turn that sparse evidence into a confident 11/2 recommendation.
Highland Call has finished sixth in two recent maiden hurdles and needs to find more through the last half-mile. Carleys Lilly's mark of 90 leaves her with an obvious ability gap to bridge. A watching brief is more useful than trying to make one of those profiles fit an attractive-looking price.
Clonmel 14:00 | Smallcraftwarning
Back Smallcraftwarning: 1pt e/w at 15/2, Bet365, 3 places.
Smallcraftwarning is the NAP at 15/2 back over hurdles. He won over three miles at Roscommon and Gowran within six days in the autumn, and both performances showed the quality which matters here: he kept finding after coming under pressure. At Roscommon he moved through from midfield and asserted after the last; at Gowran he still had work to do at the final flight but finished strongly enough to lead close home.
He is now on 111, six pounds above the mark from which he won at Gowran. That prevents any claim that he is thrown in, and the rival he narrowly beat there has a three-pound pull. My interest rests on the difference in price and on the prospect of another properly run staying hurdle, not on pretending the handicapper has missed his improvement.
His two subsequent chase outings brought a second at Fairyhouse and a fall at the third fence at Punchestown. A fall is never dismissed casually, but switching back to the smaller obstacles returns him to the discipline in which he had been progressing. He has had 22 days to recover. Nelson Muntz won well at Gowran over two miles and four furlongs, while Hopeful Hero has a recent course success at a staying trip. Both deserve respect. Smallcraftwarning already has the repeated three-mile evidence I want, and 15/2 leaves room for the new mark and that recent fall. Bet 365 offers 15/2 and three places, which makes an each-way bet the appropriate way to take that chance. I would require at least 7/1 with those terms.
Minimum acceptable price: 7/1.
Clonmel 14:35 | No Bet
A Snow White Park has progressed through handicap company and won at Roscommon on her latest start. She also showed that the longer trip was within range when scoring at Tramore in August. Those are proper positives, but this is a much more searching assignment at the weights. Her official mark of 122 and the modest allowance she receives do not establish that she belongs at the head of a Listed chase market.
She has made mistakes even when winning, including untidy leaps late at Roscommon. It is harder to get away with lost momentum when facing much stronger opposition. At 9/1 I do not find enough winning value to back her solely because she is the most plausible of the less-established runners.
Jolie Jewel has useful placed chase form, including close finishes at Punchestown and Ballinrobe, but she finished fifth at Fairyhouse just two days ago. That turnaround adds uncertainty rather than creating an opportunity. Bynx and Chosen Shant have been competing at a much lower level. This is a race to watch without a bet.
Clonmel 15:10 | No Bet
Kappa Jy Pyke is a useful young chaser, but 11/2 is not enough to make me oppose the class advantage elsewhere in this field. He won at Thurles and Punchestown during his novice campaign, and he can improve beyond a mark of 151. Receiving ten pounds is helpful. It still leaves him with a sizeable amount to find on the established ratings, and his last completed run was a seventh at Punchestown, beaten 24 lengths, in April.
There is also a 191-day absence to absorb. That need not stop a well-prepared horse, but it prevents fitness from becoming an advantage in his favour. I would need a more generous price to pay for both the class gap and the uncertainty about his readiness.
Blaze The Way has a Cheltenham handicap win on his record, yet the latest Listowel tenth was well below that level. Herja is fit and won at Sligo, but her mark of 110 shows the scale of the assignment. A small field makes this an instructive race rather than a compulsory wager. No Bet.
Clonmel 15:45 | Dontcavein
Back Dontcavein: 2pt win at 13/2, PricedUp, Sky Bet, Paddy Power.
Dontcavein makes most appeal at 13/2 in the handicap chase. His Galway second eleven days ago was the best evidence he has yet provided over fences. He made steady ground from the back, moved into contention after three out and was still close enough to take advantage when the final placings were amended. The official result is second, not the third position in which he crossed the line.
He is only a pound higher on 92 and Eoghan Finegan claims five. That gives him a reasonable opportunity to build on the run without requiring a big new level of ability. It also separates him from a number of runners whose prices rest on an old hurdle performance or a more forgiving chase mark rather than a recent completed chase effort.
The ground is a reservation. Galway was soft to heavy and the earlier Tramore fourth came on yielding ground; today's good to yielding conditions may ask him to travel more quickly. I do not want him detached before the race begins in earnest. A position within reach, while preserving enough for the climb, should be the aim.
Courtbrack Boy has a course hurdle win and a good chase debut, but returns after 200 days. Kelly's Cosmos ran well over hurdles here a fortnight ago and has to transfer that effort to fences. Stily has a recent course placing but needs to finish more strongly. At 13/2 I will take Dontcavein's current chase evidence, with 11/2 the lower limit.
Minimum acceptable price: 11/2.
Clonmel 16:20 | Distraction
Back Distraction: 2pt win at 4/1, General.
Distraction appeals at 4/1 in the closing bumper because his latest effort supplies a more current measure than the reputations of the newcomers. He finished second at Listowel in September, beaten a little over three lengths, having made the running and kept going after being headed. That was on good ground, and it gives him a clear piece of evidence for today's surface.
He is not a horse to back regardless of price. At Tramore in May he pulled hard and moved into the lead too early before fading; at Wexford he finished fourth without finding a decisive change of gear. His Listowel run was better, but it does not establish that he has become a different horse. A hood is listed, and I want John Gleeson to keep him in a rhythm rather than turn the race into an unnecessary test of keenness.
Greenbrier is an interesting recruit for Gordon Elliott after placed point-to-point form, although the available rules history offers no direct comparison. River Cartwright has recent bumper experience but could not sustain his lead at Tramore. Distraction's fitness and sound-ground form are enough to make him the bet at 4/1. They would be much less compelling after another shortening, so that is the price I require.
Minimum acceptable price: 4/1.
Best bets of the day
Smallcraftwarning is the NAP in the staying hurdle. Young Doran is another each-way interest in the opener, with his jumping the obvious concern. Dontcavein has a recent chase performance to build on, while Distraction offers current good-ground bumper form in the finale.
