The Curragh's autumn card places an intriguing juvenile fillies race between sprint handicappers and a crowded pair of closing handicaps. The challenge is not to make one theory fit all seven races. Inexperienced two-year-olds need room to improve, the amateur riders' Derby rewards usable recent form, and the late handicaps demand a horse who can finish without needing every gap to open at exactly the right moment.

The official Curragh fixture page confirms the meeting and its Staffordstown Stud Stakes feature. The current Racing Post card and Racing TV feature card confirm the Group 3 over a mile at 15:00. It is the day's highest-status race in Britain or Ireland, the reason this is the principal meeting ahead of Newcastle's ordinary Class 3 programme.

The refreshed card contains seven races and 106 active runners, with three reserves listed separately for the 16:10. The working going description is Yielding. Reserves are not counted as starters and are not advised. Earlier entry lists and the fixture page's supporting-race sequence are not substitutes for today's final seven-race timetable, running from 13:25 to 16:45.

The Met Éireann Leinster forecast, issued at 07:30 on 20 October, expects a mainly dry day initially, with cloud building and rain spreading northeast later in the afternoon and evening. Forecast highs are 13°C to 15°C. That leaves a weather-change risk for the later races, not evidence that the track has already softened. No quantified rail adjustment or numerical draw advantage is claimed: the current verified material does not establish one.

Quick race guide

13:25 Six-furlong maiden | 13:55 Sprint handicap | 14:25 Fillies maiden | 15:00 Staffordstown Stud Stakes | 15:35 Amateur riders Derby | 16:10 Ten-furlong handicap | 16:45 Mile handicap

Curragh 13:25 | Shake It Out

Back Shake It Out: 1.5pt win at 7/1, Paddy Power.

Shake It Out can take a useful step forward on his second visit to the Curragh. He finished sixth in a six-furlong maiden here on 26 September, beaten four and a half lengths, and the bare placing understates the interest of his finish. He was finding room when the race was already developing, then made late progress. This is the same course, distance and current going description, so the improvement required does not depend on a new surface unlocking him.

A central berth in stall seven gives his rider options. I would like him following a useful lead, conserving enough energy to make one sustained effort rather than being asked to manufacture his own race too early. That is a projection, not an assurance that the field will split conveniently. With inexperienced horses around him, a clean passage cannot be taken for granted.

Nation Blaze has more exposed evidence, including a Cork second, but his subsequent seven-furlong effort here was disappointing and he must work from the outside stall. One Flash finished second at Naas, although a twelve-length defeat is not the kind of runner-up form to accept at face value. Tabasco River is an unraced variable, not a horse whose ability can be declared from his connections alone.

The objection is straightforward: the selection has not yet shown that he can go through and win a maiden. His debut does, however, provide a specific reason to expect improvement, and the price gives that possibility room. The recommendation is win-only at the stated price.

Minimum acceptable price: 7/1.

Curragh 13:55 | Lilli's Angel

Back Lilli's Angel: 1pt e/w at 7/1, Bet365, 5 places.

Lilli's Angel comes here as a filly who has just learned how to finish a race. Her Navan maiden win on 7 October, over six furlongs on yielding ground, makes today's trip and surface entirely reasonable. Before that she had finished within two and a quarter lengths of the winner at Cork. There is a progression to work with, rather than a case built on a single unexplained collapse in her handicap mark.

The handicapper has not ignored that improvement. She is now rated 78, compared with 66 before the maiden success, and this is a materially harder task against experienced sprinters. That rise is the principal reason to demand a proper price. Her rider's 7lb claim helps with the allotted weight, but it does not magically cancel the rise or guarantee an equally polished tactical ride.

From stall six, a clean break should allow her to follow the pace without an immediate scramble for position. A slow start would be much more costly in a seventeen-runner handicap than the win line alone suggests. Go Athletico has a recent course fourth to bring him into the argument, while All The Girls has been competitive on the all-weather and was not far away at Cork. Neither makes this an easy race to solve.

The appeal is that the selection may still have improvement left after her breakthrough. The danger is that the new rating has already caught up. At the advised price, with the verified place offer, I am prepared to back the former possibility without pretending the latter has disappeared.

Minimum acceptable price: 7/1.

Curragh 14:25 | No Bet

The fillies maiden is one to watch without a financial interest. Kashala made an encouraging debut over this course and distance on 3 June, finishing fourth, beaten four and a half lengths. She was doing useful work late, but returns after 139 days. It would be easy to turn that one hint into an elaborate improvement story. There is not enough evidence to make the available price persuasive.

Sounds Great has the more recent run, a Killarney third over eleven furlongs on soft. She was beaten four lengths, having previously shown ability in a Gowran second. The extra furlong may help, but that is a possibility rather than a demonstrated advantage. I Hope You Dance has a twelve-furlong second on soft to heavy in her record, yet her latest Galway fourth leaves her with something to recover.

Senna's Girl ran respectably when third at Naas and may stay this longer trip. Her exposed rating still asks her to find more, while Loosen And Limber needs a much better performance after a well-beaten debut. Several runners have a route to improvement; none provides a sufficiently reliable price edge for a recommendation.

Verdict: No Bet. The decision is about the balance of evidence and price, not a claim that the race has no possible winner.

Curragh 15:00 | The Good Wife

Back The Good Wife: 2pt win at 9/2, BOYLE Sports, Paddy Power.

The Staffordstown Stud Stakes asks an interesting question of The Good Wife: can the promise of a maiden win survive a much more searching examination? At the price I am prepared to find out. Paddy Twomey's filly won over a mile at Punchestown on 15 September, showing that she could travel in front and keep responding when the race became a contest. That is a useful piece of evidence for a Group 3 in which several fillies are still learning what their best distance will be.

She had finished sixth over seven furlongs at Galway on debut. The subsequent improvement makes the longer trip more convincing than a pedigree-only argument, although two runs do not establish either her ceiling or her reliability. The latest victory came on good ground; today's yielding surface adds a separate question. She must improve again, not merely repeat the maiden performance.

Billy Lee can use stall three to seek a sensible position without committing to a frantic opening quarter. A controlled prominent run would make the most of the stamina she has shown. A battle for the lead would have the opposite effect. Golden Ring brings Group-race experience and a recent Dundalk mile win, while Isle Of Capri has already won over a mile on yielding to soft. Those are credible, specific challenges.

The price is the distinction. I assess the selection a little shorter than the available offer, with room for the class rise and ground uncertainty. She is the NAP, but remains an improving filly taking a substantial step up, not a finished product whose superiority can be assumed.

Minimum acceptable price: 4/1.

Curragh 15:35 | Bay of Stars

Back Bay of Stars: 1.5pt win at 12/1, Paddy Power.

Bay of Stars appeals at a double-figure price in the amateur riders' Derby. He was beaten only three quarters of a length when third over fourteen furlongs at Listowel on 22 September. Earlier in the year he had gone down by half a length over today's twelve-furlong trip at Leopardstown. Those runs make a coherent case: he can be competitive without needing a speculative revival or a dramatic change in conditions.

His rating of 86 understates the difficulty of today's race if it is used in isolation. Absurde has a much higher mark, but comes off a very poor run in the Irish Cesarewitch. Shosholoza also has substantial back-class without compelling recent finishing evidence. The selection cannot claim their peak ability; his attraction is the price attached to his more recent, more usable form.

Finian Maguire has stall one and a horse who has performed close to the pace. Saving ground would be helpful, provided he does not become locked behind horses as the field turns for home. The visor stays on. I would prefer a measured, handy ride to waiting for a pace collapse that may never arrive.

The York disappointment in August remains a warning that he is not invariably dependable, and twelve furlongs leaves less time to organise a late challenge than the Listowel trip. Even allowing for those risks, the available win price is bigger than my assessment. This is a win-only recommendation, not an each-way offer with unverified conditions attached.

Minimum acceptable price: 10/1.

Curragh 16:10 | Khormor Syd

Back Khormor Syd: 1pt e/w at 8/1, Bet365, 6 places.

There was more in Khormor Syd's recent course run than a seventh place immediately conveys. He finished only two and three-quarter lengths behind the winner over nine furlongs here on 15 October, having been denied a clear run before making late progress. That was his first outing since June. A sharper horse, a little more distance and a less interrupted finish form a specific improvement case.

He remains on 63, the same mark as five days ago. His previous Flat run had produced a win over nine furlongs on soft at Leopardstown, while his Limerick second over almost twelve furlongs shows that a ten-furlong test is not an adventurous stamina guess. The combination is more persuasive than simply saying a horse was unlucky last time.

Billy Lee takes the ride from stall fifteen. A patient approach is likely, but patience is useful only if it leaves the horse with a route through the race. In a twenty-four-runner handicap, being held up brings the possibility of fresh interference. Kodi Brown and Max Meridius both come from wins and can contribute to an honest pace, though their higher marks make it dangerous to assume they can reproduce those margins. Cladach has been consistently competitive without finding the winning finish.

The short turnaround is the counterargument. Improvement after a break is not automatic, and another crowded passage could leave the selection with too much to do. At the advised price and terms, his established staying form and the detail of the comeback justify the each-way interest.

Minimum acceptable price: 7/1.

Curragh 16:45 | Loingseoir

Back Loingseoir: 0.5pt e/w at 18/1, Coral, Ladbrokes, 5 places.

The finale offers a useful distinction between a recent defeat and a loss of ability. Loingseoir was eighth over seven furlongs here five days ago, beaten four and three-quarter lengths. That was not a winning performance in disguise, but his previous start was a much stronger guide to today's assignment: second over this course and mile on 4 October, beaten half a length on soft ground.

He returns to that distance from a mark of 65, only 2lb above the figure from the close second. Shay Wallace's 7lb claim helps with the allotted weight, while the established course form means the wager does not depend on a new track transforming him. The claim still comes with an inexperienced rider's tactical burden in a large field; it is an allowance, not free improvement.

The draw in stall twenty-one requires care. I would rather see him find a suitable group and conserve ground than chase an assumed stands-side advantage unsupported by today's evidence. His usual late-running style needs pace and room. Jasmine Affanalis brings a Killarney win, Roaming Coyote has respectable recent placed form, and Chipsrdown is interesting back at a mile after a heavy-ground ten-furlong defeat. There is depth beneath the more obvious runners.

At the available price, Loingseoir's course second has more value than his latest placing suggests. The objection is his inconsistency: he has also produced several runs that would not put him near the finish. That is why this is a modest each-way stake with the verified place offer, not an attempt to make a certainty out of a large handicap.

Minimum acceptable price: 14/1.

Best bets of the day

The Good Wife is preferred for the combination of a demonstrated mile finish, a workable low draw and the scope to improve again. Khormor Syd is interesting after a restricted passage here, while Loingseoir returns to the mile with a close course second still fresh enough to matter. None should be backed below the stated minimum price.
