The middle day of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival is no mere warm-up for Saturday. Two Listed sprints and the Bronze Cup give the card a proper centre of gravity, but the soft ground asks rather different questions of a precocious two-year-old, a seasoned mare and a cavalry-charge handicapper. I want a horse whose recent evidence fits today's test, not simply the one with the most imposing career rating. The official festival programme confirms the feature-race sequence. Our horse-racing tips approach weighs the price alongside the form.

The current Ayr declarations show eight races. The Racing API and signed-in Oddschecker sportsbook grids were checked at 08:03-08:14 BST. Going was soft, good to soft in places, with the five- and six-furlong stalls in the centre and the seven-furlong stalls outside. Prices can move, and late non-runners or further rain would warrant a fresh look. Angel Shared is out of the 15:05 and Rikki Tiki Tavi is out of the Bronze Cup. Ayr 13:20 | One Shot Kodi | 2pt win at 11/2, Bet365

NEXT BEST: Diplomata at 11/8

There is a useful piece of evidence hiding in plain sight: One Shot Kodi and Diplomata met over seven furlongs on soft ground at Haydock on 3 September. Diplomata got up late after being checked for room; One Shot Kodi had briefly taken command and was beaten a length. Eight pounds separate them on today's handicap marks, and Diplomata shoulders eight pounds more in absolute weight. I cannot pretend the winner's interrupted passage was imaginary, but the market's 11/8 versus 11/2 is a much bigger gulf than that single finish suggests. One Shot Kodi needs to keep straight under pressure and Kevin Ryan's recent yard figures are quieter than Haggas's. Still, this is an attractive chance to back the same-ground form at the more generous price. Diplomata is a thoroughly credible next best: her Haydock late surge and Epsom third show both fight and an ability to hold a position. Missouri Waltz has a solid early profile but is untested on soft, while Motown Filly remains a maiden stepping up in trip. See the live race grid.

VERDICT: One Shot Kodi, 2pt win at 11/2, Bet365. I would want at least 9/2. Diplomata at 11/8 is the likeliest danger, though she is too short for my main bet.

Ayr 13:55 | Trumpety Trump | 2pt win at 6/1, Bet365

NEXT BEST: Dontlookanyfurther at 13/8

The topweight Dontlookanyfurther won with something in hand at Thirsk on good to soft and might simply be ahead of the handicapper. But he has gone up to 91, sits in stall one, and offers little margin at 13/8 in a 13-runner nursery. Trumpety Trump is less fashionable after trying a mile, yet his previous six-furlong run at Hamilton on soft saw him track the pace, go on and keep finding. Back at that trip, drawn three and carrying 11lb less than the favourite, he has a more interesting balance of evidence and price at 6/1. It is not a riskless comparison: the Thirsk winner may be improving faster, and Trumpety Trump's earlier efforts were mixed. Siouxperb has class-1 experience and a 6f Newcastle second, but needs to leave a York disappointment behind. Furturra's latest third was over five furlongs. The racecard makes this a real contest, not a two-horse formality.

VERDICT: Trumpety Trump, 2pt win at 6/1, Bet365. Minimum 11/2. Dontlookanyfurther at 13/8 is the strongest alternative on progressive form.

Ayr 14:30 | Hickory Lad | 3pt win at 6/4, General

NEXT BEST: Mussab at 4/1

I want the York run to count for more than a quick glance at the bare third. Hickory Lad made ground from the rear to be third in a stronger five-furlong race on good to soft; his earlier record includes two wins and he brings the highest official mark, 99. His Goodwood six-furlong eighth is the obvious blot, but the return to the minimum trip looks much more pertinent. Mussab is a proper danger: a recent Newcastle five-furlong winner with an Ascot third and an official mark of 97. The reservation is the surface change from that most recent all-weather success to Ayr's soft turf. Dubai Champion missed the break badly at York, so the last-place finish can be softened, and his earlier Goodwood second is respectable. Dance A Jig won readily at Haydock before finding York beyond him. At 6/4 Hickory Lad does not offer a vast margin, but he has the most persuasive combination of class and recent turf sprint form. The Harry Rosebery card has eight active runners.

VERDICT: Hickory Lad, 3pt win at 6/4, General. Minimum 11/8. Mussab at 4/1 would be the one I fear if transferring his Newcastle speed to this ground.

Ayr 15:05 | La Brodeuse | 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, BetMGM, 4 places

NEXT BEST: Beautiful Diamond at 13/8

Beautiful Diamond won this Listed race last year on soft and was close up in another Ayr Listed sprint in June. She plainly deserves favouritism. But 13/8 is a demanding price on a return from nearly three months off against a wider field, and La Brodeuse supplies an intriguing counterweight at 14/1. Her latest third came in a Deauville Group 3 on heavy ground over six furlongs; before that she was third in a Galway Listed race on yielding to soft, having made the pace. Those trips were longer than today's five and a half furlongs, so she must be sharp enough early, but testing ground can bring her stamina into play late. BetMGM's quoted 4 places make the price relevant to an each-way assessment, rather than relying on a nominally bigger number with weaker terms. Fluorescence has progressed in handicaps, while Luna A Inbhir Nis has a Sandown Group 3 second but returns after 76 days. Angel Shared has been withdrawn. The Arran grid showed 14 active starters at the check.

VERDICT: La Brodeuse, 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, BetMGM, 4 places. I would not follow below 12/1 on equivalent terms. Beautiful Diamond at 13/8 is the clear next best on course and ground form.

Ayr 15:40 | French Affair | 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, William Hill, 5 places

NEXT BEST: American Style at 14/1

The Bronze Cup is a race in which a tidy argument can be undone by where the pace develops. There are 24 active runners after Rikki Tiki Tavi's withdrawal, and the centre-stall arrangement means I am wary of declaring one extreme draw a certainty. French Affair, in stall seven, has won two of his last three six-furlong starts, at Goodwood and Redcar, both times finishing strongly from off the speed. His subsequent third over seven furlongs at Epsom on good to soft kept that upward line intact, and the drop back to six on this ground could be just what he wants. 11/1 with William Hill's 5 places is enough compensation for the usual traffic and draw uncertainties. American Style at 14/1 has an independent case: a convincing all-weather win and a narrow Chester second on good to soft, though stall 21 places him in a different part of the track. Wild Clary has a Newbury good-to-soft win and a heavy-ground Haydock fourth, but has not quite finished the job in his last two. Milford's Doncaster second is encouraging; the quick turnaround and wide draw temper enthusiasm. The Bronze Cup racecard is a race to reassess if the early sprints reveal a pronounced bias.

VERDICT: French Affair, 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, William Hill, 5 places. Minimum 10/1 with comparable terms. American Style at 14/1 is the next best, but is not a second advised bet.

Ayr 16:15 | Motawaared | 2pt win at 10/3, General

NEXT BEST: Glorious Kitty at 6/1

This first mile division looks less a race for reputation than for a horse still willing to travel through the final furlong. Motawaared has been second twice over nine furlongs at Musselburgh, the latest after making ground wide, and he had previously kept on for fourth over ten at Ayr on good to soft. He comes back to a mile and has stall ten to overcome, but that sustained finish is attractive if the soft ground turns the race into a stamina test. The 10/3 is a fairer offer than taking a chance on several more exposed rivals. Glorious Kitty at 6/1 is a serious next best: she was second over seven furlongs at Ayr on soft in June and her latest Beverley mile fourth was respectable, though she has not convinced at a mile every time. Invincible Ruby's soft-ground Hamilton third gives her an outside chance, while Empirestateofmind's falling mark is offset by an extended run of poor finishes. The mile-division grid showed 11 starters.

VERDICT: Motawaared, 2pt win at 10/3, General. Minimum 3/1. Glorious Kitty at 6/1 has the most persuasive soft-ground alternative case.

Ayr 16:45 | Penelope's Sister | 2pt win at 10/3, General

NEXT BEST: Up The Jazz at 13/2

The card supplies unusually fresh evidence here. Penelope's Sister made the running over this mile on soft yesterday and was caught close home, a performance that is more directly relevant than the all-weather form of several rivals. Stall one leaves a plausible route to another prominent position. The obvious concern is the one-day turnaround, especially on testing ground, and 10/3 is the point at which I am prepared to take that risk rather than pretend it is trivial. Ice Cube also ran yesterday and won over seven furlongs here, but must now prove the extra furlong while turned out just as quickly. Up The Jazz at 13/2 is the next best on his staying-on Carlisle second over nine furlongs, with the proviso that the recent evidence came on good ground. Starliner's Newcastle win was followed by an Ayr soft-ground eighth yesterday; Sanafi Zabeel was well beaten on the same card. The second division may change shape if yesterday's runners are not declared fit to go again.

VERDICT: Penelope's Sister, 2pt win at 10/3, General. Minimum 3/1 and check her participation. Up The Jazz at 13/2 is the strongest fresh alternative.

Ayr 17:20 | Ebony Maw | 0.5pt e/w at 16/1, Unibet, 3 places

NEXT BEST: Cascade Hall at 10/11

Cascade Hall is a worthy odds-on favourite after winning at Chester over two miles and finishing second on heavy ground at Haydock. Those runs ask the rest to find something. At 10/11 with PricedUp, however, he sits outside the advised win-price range, and the staying-handicap grid offers a more interesting price about Ebony Maw. He won over this Ayr mile-and-five-furlong course and distance in July, making all, and followed with two Hamilton thirds, latterly on soft. The 16/1 is not an assertion that he is the most likely winner; he carries less weight and has demonstrated the precise course, trip and easing-ground aptitude that could put him in the argument if allowed to dictate. His recent thirds show he can be caught late, and Cascade Hall has the stronger current winning form. Unibet's 3 places underpin the each-way play, without making a place outcome assured. Mr Moonshine's recent Southwell win makes him a further danger, though it came on the all-weather.

VERDICT: Ebony Maw, 0.5pt e/w at 16/1, Unibet, 3 places. Minimum 14/1 with the same terms. Cascade Hall at 10/11 is the credible next best, but no advised odds-on stake is made.

Best bets of the day

Hickory Lad at 6/4 is the NAP on the balance of York sprint form and today's five-furlong conditions. One Shot Kodi at 11/2 is the next best of the day because the same-race soft-ground form makes the gulf to Diplomata more intriguing than their prices imply. French Affair at 11/1, William Hill, 5 places is my preferred Bronze Cup value angle. None of these prices removes the possibility of defeat.
