The Ayr Gold Cup Festival begins with the Kilkerran Handicap, a Class 2 contest over ten furlongs, and two Class 3 races around it. It is a deeper sporting card than the last day of Yarmouth's Eastern Festival. That does not make every favourite a bet. Our horse-racing tips approach favours horses whose recent runs say more than their place in the market.

The current Ayr card reports good to soft, a GoingStick reading of 7.4 and light rain. Seven races have a 21-yard rail extension, with the 14:00 sprint the exception. There are eight races and 100 active runners after two withdrawals. The prices below were checked at 17 September 2026 at 08:19 Europe/London. Ground, non-runners and each-way terms can change before the off, so check the market again before betting. All betting is for adults aged 18 and over.

Ayr 13:30 | Perfect Heir | 2pt win at 7/2, Unibet

NEXT BEST: Zarak Crown at 15/2

Bassrah has the most runs to measure, but pulling hard before fading into fourth at Sandown does not settle the question of a mile. Perfect Heir is asked to go that far for the first time too, yet the shape of his Kempton debut is more persuasive. He was short of room three furlongs out, responded when clear and finished fourth, only one and three-quarter lengths behind the winner. Andrew Balding's recent strike rate adds encouragement, though an all-weather debut is not proof he will handle this rain-softened turf. At 7/2 I would rather pay for the potential improvement than take Bassrah at a shorter price.

Zarak Crown is a fair price-only next best at 15/2. He raced prominently on soft ground at Haydock and kept on into a close fourth on debut over this trip. He is entitled to learn from that run, with the obvious reservation that several rivals also have scope to improve.

VERDICT: Perfect Heir, 2pt win at 7/2, Unibet. Do not take shorter than 3/1. Zarak Crown is next best at 15/2.

Ayr 14:00 | Great Profit | 1pt e/w at 8/1, Betfred, 5 places

NEXT BEST: The Caltonian at 11/2

Oriental Prince arrives off a York win and is entirely credible, but 5/2 is a pinched price in a 20-runner straight sprint. Great Profit has put together a much more useful sequence than his 8/1 quote implies: second over six furlongs here in July, winner at Thirsk in August and third at Newcastle earlier this month. He travels close enough to the pace to avoid needing the whole field to collapse. The drop to five furlongs is the real objection, particularly if he is caught flat-footed halfway. Betfred's five-place terms compensate for that uncertainty without pretending it disappears; our each-way bet calculator shows how those terms affect the possible return.

The Caltonian has the strongest performance figure in the field and his late work when third at Redcar suggested he remains capable. Most of his recent evidence is at six furlongs, however, and he too has to show this sharper test does not happen too quickly. He is the next best at 11/2 rather than a second advised bet.

VERDICT: Great Profit, 1pt e/w at 8/1, Betfred, 5 places. Do not take shorter than 8/1. The Caltonian is next best at 11/2.

Ayr 14:30 | Valley Of Flowers | 1.5pt win at 7/1, William Hill

NEXT BEST: Darzah at 11/10

The market is taking a firm view of Darzah, whose two wins this season and latest second make her the clear danger. She has still to prove this ten-furlong trip in the current conditions, and 11/10 leaves very little margin for that unknown. Valley Of Flowers is more appealing at 7/1. She came from the rear to win over a mile and a half on soft ground at Beverley last time, so the extra 21 yards and any further rain are unlikely to trouble her stamina. She needs the race to be run honestly, because dropping in trip could blunt her finishing advantage if Krissy dictates an easy tempo. The win-only price fairly reflects that risk.

The shorter trip is a genuine test, but 7/1 is generous enough for a straight win bet on a mare who arrives in winning form and should keep finding if the pace stretches them.

VERDICT: Valley Of Flowers, 1.5pt win at 7/1, William Hill. Do not take shorter than 7/1. Darzah is next best at 11/10.

Ayr 15:00 | Impartiality | 2pt win at 9/2, Bet365

NEXT BEST: Have Secret at 16/1

Four consecutive seconds can be read as admirable consistency or a habit of finding one too good. I come down on the former for Impartiality at 9/2. His latest effort came on soft ground at Chester only five days ago, when he met traffic before finishing strongly. He had previously stayed on into second on heavy ground at Beverley, so a searching ten furlongs should not catch him out. Wild Thoughts has a smart pair of recent places and Galyx won at Beverley, but neither is priced generously enough to erase their own questions: Wild Thoughts has thrown in a poor run between better ones, while Galyx must reproduce heavy-ground form back up in class.

The price-only next best, Have Secret at 16/1, is not a casual outsider. He was fourth at York over a similar trip on good to soft only 11 days ago and holds one of the higher performance figures in this field. His preceding sequence of unplaced runs is why he remains a secondary view, but he is more plausible than his price alone suggests.

VERDICT: Impartiality, 2pt win at 9/2, Bet365. Do not take shorter than 4/1. Have Secret is next best at 16/1.

Ayr 15:30 | Tarmonbarry Kid | 2pt win at 7/2, PricedUp

NEXT BEST: Atmosphere at 5/1

Tarmonbarry Kid is the NAP at 7/2, not because the mile handicap is easy, but because his two recent wins answer the central questions. He scored at Doncaster on good to soft in May and was back in front at Beverley on soft last month, travelling wide before taking command. A mile, this sort of ground and a competitive field have all been met before. He does shoulder a higher mark now and stall ten gives Oisin Orr some work to do before the bend. Those are genuine costs, yet the price still allows for them.

Atmosphere is the next best at 5/1 after finishing third at Ascot despite pulling hard. Stall four offers a cleaner path than several of the principal rivals, but repeated placings without a win make it difficult to put him ahead of the selection. Second Fiddle's recent Newcastle second is noted, though her lower figure and wide draw make her less convincing on turf.

VERDICT: Tarmonbarry Kid, 2pt win at 7/2, PricedUp. Do not take shorter than 7/2. Atmosphere is next best at 5/1.

Ayr 16:00 | Green Pursuit | 1pt e/w at 17/2, Bet365, 4 places

NEXT BEST: Barley at 6/1

Sailthisshipalone has the highest recent figure, but he returns from a 62-day break and his last three runs were thirds rather than victories. Green Pursuit appeals more at 17/2. He came from the rear to be second over a mile at Thirsk and had earlier finished third on soft ground at Carlisle. That combination suggests the current surface and a strongly run mile can bring his late work into play. He has not won recently and needs to avoid being caught behind fading runners, but four places give a reasonable cushion for a horse whose recent efforts are stronger than his market rank.

Barley won at Carlisle eight days ago and is an obvious alternative at 6/1. The drawback is the uneven sequence before that success, including a heavy defeat at York. He may be better when allowed to travel just behind the pace, so David Allan's early position matters.

VERDICT: Green Pursuit, 1pt e/w at 17/2, Bet365, 4 places. Do not take shorter than 8/1. Barley is next best at 6/1.

Ayr 16:30 | Jkr Cobbler | 1pt e/w at 7/1, Bet365, 4 places

NEXT BEST: Vince Le Prince at 3/1

The favourite Vince Le Prince has three recent placed runs and is well drawn, but he has not converted one of them into a win. Jkr Cobbler already has a win over this Ayr seven-furlong configuration in July and followed it with a respectable fourth at the course eight days later. He was asked to settle after fighting for his head in that win, then found a sustained run from three furlongs out. His 66-day absence and a higher draw are reasons not to be too bold; neither seems enough to justify the gulf between 7/1 and the market leader's 3/1 in a 14-runner handicap.

The pace may be honest with Vince Le Prince and Carmel Valley both capable of taking a position. If that happens, Jkr Cobbler can find cover and aim to finish through rivals. He is an each-way position at the stated four places, with Vince Le Prince the likeliest threat.

VERDICT: Jkr Cobbler, 1pt e/w at 7/1, Bet365, 4 places. Do not take shorter than 7/1. Vince Le Prince is next best at 3/1.

Ayr 17:01 | Spirit Of Acklam | 2pt win at 4/1, William Hill

NEXT BEST: Ashnak at 3/1

The finale asks for stamina, particularly with the rail extension and some give in the ground. Spirit Of Acklam won over almost this distance at Hamilton in July and was third on good to soft at Thirsk last time, still battling when others had finished their effort. He was fourth at Ayr between those runs, but that was at a shorter trip; the return to a staying test is the attraction at 4/1. Stall twelve is not ideal and he can race keenly, so Joanna Mason must find a position without using too much energy.

Ashnak was second at Ayr over the course-and-distance on soft in June. That form commands respect at 3/1, though his two latest runs were seventh and eighth, so his price relies on a revival. Elsass and Northwest Passage have fragments of useful form but more distance or consistency to prove.

VERDICT: Spirit Of Acklam, 2pt win at 4/1, William Hill. Do not take shorter than 7/2. Ashnak is next best at 3/1.

Best bets of the day

Tarmonbarry Kid is the NAP because his soft-ground Beverley win and earlier good-to-soft Doncaster success give him the most complete conditions case at the price. Impartiality is the next best of the day: the run of seconds is frustrating, but his finishing effort at Chester on soft makes 9/2 more attractive than it first appears. Great Profit, Green Pursuit and Jkr Cobbler are the three larger-field place-and-win positions that survive close scrutiny. The Kilkerran and the 14:30 fillies' race could change character if Ayr gets more rain.
