# Dead Heats in Horse Racing: How the Return Is Calculated

The direct answer

A dead heat occurs when the official result cannot separate two or more horses for the relevant position. Standard fixed-odds settlement normally divides the effective stake by the number of tied horses, applies the full accepted odds to the winning fraction and treats the remainder as losing.

That is why simply halving the return can produce the wrong answer. The winning fraction of the stake is returned with its profit. The losing fraction is not.

For a two-horse dead heat, a £10 win bet at decimal odds of 5.00 is commonly settled as £5 winning at 5.00 and £5 losing. The total return is £25 and the net profit is £15. The dead-heat calculator reproduces the arithmetic for more complex cases.

The standard win-bet formula

For a tie involving the backed selection and `T` horses sharing the same finishing position:

`adjusted return = stake / T x decimal odds`

The net result is the adjusted return minus the original cash stake.

The last line is useful. A winner at evens in a two-way dead heat can return the original £10 without making a profit. Half the stake wins at 2.00 and half loses.

Why halving the normal payout is sometimes misleading

A £10 win at 4/1 would normally return £50, including stake. Halving £50 gives £25, which happens to match the standard two-way dead-heat return. But that shortcut becomes unreliable when people talk about halving winnings, halving profit or handling an each-way bet. The safe method is always to divide the effective stake first.

At fractional odds, calculate the winning stake fraction, apply the full fractional profit, then add back that winning fraction of the stake. At decimal odds, multiplying the reduced stake by the full decimal price performs both steps.

Each-way bets contain two separate settlements

An each-way bet is a win bet and a place bet. A £10 each-way stake costs £20. If the horse dead-heats for first, the win half receives the win dead-heat adjustment. The place half is then settled under the place terms and may not have a dead-heat adjustment at all if the horse occupies an ordinary qualifying place.

Suppose the horse is backed £10 each way at 8/1, with place terms of one quarter the odds. It dead-heats for first with one rival.

The £10 win half becomes £5 winning at 8/1 and £5 losing. The win return is £45: £40 profit plus the £5 winning stake fraction.

The £10 place half is settled at 2/1 if the place result itself is not tied across too few available places. Its return is £30: £20 profit plus the £10 place stake.

The combined return is £75 from a £20 total outlay, giving £55 net profit. This illustration assumes no Rule 4 deduction and no separate place dead heat.

A dead heat for the final place

Place settlement becomes more complicated when several horses share fewer remaining qualifying positions. Suppose an each-way market pays three places and two horses tie for third. There is one remaining place shared by two horses, so the effective place stake is commonly divided by two.

If three horses share two available places, the place fraction is `2 / 3`, not `1 / 3`. The number of tied horses alone is not enough. Count how many paying positions remain available to that tied group.

Dead heats inside accumulators

A dead-heat selection does not become a simple winner at the full original odds. Its adjusted return factor feeds into the multiple. One practical method is to calculate the return for that leg from a £1 stake, then use the resulting decimal factor in the accumulator.

For a two-way dead heat at decimal odds of 5.00, a £1 stake returns £2.50. The effective factor for that leg is therefore 2.50, not 5.00 and not 1.00.

Suppose a £10 treble contains winners at 2.00 and 3.00 plus that 5.00 dead-heat leg. The adjusted illustrative return is:

`£10 x 2.00 x 3.00 x 2.50 = £150`

Rule 4 and a dead heat can both apply

If another horse was withdrawn after prices were formed, the bookmaker may apply a Rule 4 deduction to profit as well as the dead-heat adjustment. The order and exact calculation should follow the operator's rules.

Which result counts?

Bookmakers normally settle to a specified official result, often the weighed-in result in British and Irish racing. Later disciplinary changes may not alter settled bets unless the published rules say otherwise.

Photo-finish pictures can look decisive to a viewer while the official judge declares a dead heat. The betting result follows the recognised result source, not a social-media crop or television opinion. Save the official result and the accepted receipt if the account settlement looks wrong.
