Nunthorpe day at York

Nunthorpe day is the strongest British or Irish card this Friday by a clear margin. York provides a Group 1 sprint, two Group 2 races and four valuable supporting contests, with 101 current declarations across seven races. The central problem is familiar at this meeting: the obvious horses are easy to identify, but the size and quality of the fields demand a harder look at price, pace and track position. Our wider horse-racing coverage provides more context from the meeting, while this column concentrates on the seven bets.

At the final draft check at 10:30 Europe/London, the official going remained Good to Soft. The morning GoingStick reading was 5.9 overall, with readings between 5.7 and 5.8 across the home straight. The 1.50 is extended by 17 yards, while the 2.25, 4.10 and 5.20 are extended by 22 yards. The Met Office forecast showed a 60% chance of light showers at 1pm and 2pm, easing to cloud and then sunny intervals from 4pm. Stalls are in the centre for the five-furlong, six-furlong and mile-and-a-half races, and inside for the remainder.

I am happy to oppose several short-priced runners. The opening favourite has a solid chance but little margin for error in a 19-runner handicap, the Lonsdale Cup market is leaning heavily on horses with recent questions to answer, and the Nunthorpe favourite is being asked to jump from handicap company into a Group 1 at a very short price. The value sits with proven big-field form, course evidence and a two-year-old whose weight allowance makes her more dangerous than the bare ratings suggest.

Odds, going, non-runners and place concessions can change. All prices and terms in this column were checked at 10:30 Europe/London on 21 August 2026. Recheck them before betting, particularly if withdrawals lead to a Rule 4 deduction.

York 1.50 | OUTBACK HEAT | 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, 5 places

NEXT BEST: ZENNOR STORM

The market has latched on to Zennor Storm, and the case is easy to understand. He was fourth over this course and distance in June, then finished strongly from the rear when second in a 19-runner Goodwood handicap. A mark of 92 remains manageable and Tom Marquand is an obvious positive. The objection is the price. He needs another step forward from a 1lb higher mark, and 7/2 is cramped in a race containing several progressive three-year-olds.

Blue Courvoisier is interesting at 8/1 after running third at Goodwood. He travelled like the best horse for much of that nine-furlong contest and the return to a mile should help, but his Royal Ascot run showed that he can be vulnerable when forced to sustain a hard gallop against a large field. Exclusive Code and Welbury arrive after wins, while Eklleem remains lightly raced. All three have claims, although their prices do not compensate as generously for the rise in class and the draw questions.

OUTBACK HEAT produced the strongest single handicap performance in this field when second to a well-handicapped rival in a 30-runner Royal Ascot mile. He was held up, had to switch for his run and finished strongly after drifting left under pressure. That effort followed a decisive Ascot success from a mark of 85, and the pair of runs strongly suggests his current mark of 96 is not the ceiling of his ability.

Stall 18 is the obvious concern. There is pace among Blue Courvoisier, Le Samourai, Noelan Star and Welbury, so Kaiya Fraser should have enough options to obtain cover rather than being stranded. The Good to Soft ground is a fresh question, but his action and the strength of his finish over a stiff mile offer reasonable encouragement. The 64-day break is less troubling for a yard capable of readying one for a target.

At 12/1 with five places, the market is giving us much more room than it gives with Zennor Storm. I would rather back the horse with the best big-field mile performance at an each-way price than take 7/2 about a runner who still needs the gaps to arrive.

VERDICT: OUTBACK HEAT, 0.75pt e/w at 12/1, 5 places with PricedUp. Back at 10/1 or bigger. At 10/1, the staking band becomes 1pt e/w. ZENNOR STORM is the next best but is no value below 4/1.

York 2.25 | MOUNT ATLAS | 2pt win at 13/2

NEXT BEST: CABALLO DE MAR

The Lonsdale Cup is an unusual staying race because most of the field carries a significant caveat. Caballo De Mar is the top-rated stayer and his second at Meydan, near miss at Ascot and Longchamp win form the best body of recent evidence. His Gold Cup run was dreadful, however. He raced close to the pace before weakening sharply and was eased, so 15/8 requires complete faith that the extra half-mile alone caused the collapse.

Amiloc lost his rider leaving the stalls at Goodwood and therefore arrives fresher than his form line suggests. He has a rating of 115 and last season's Curragh and Royal Ascot form gives him a chance. The worry is that he disappointed over York's extended mile and five furlongs in May and was only sixth over a mile and a half at Ascot. He must prove that two miles now brings out his best.

MOUNT ATLAS has been thriving since stamina became the main test. His last four runs read second, second, third and first, with the two latest efforts coming over York's extended mile and five furlongs. He travelled strongly before finishing powerfully to win here in July, having been beaten only half a length over the same course and distance the month before. Those efforts show that the track, a long straight and a searching gallop suit him.

The extra three furlongs are not guaranteed, but his racing style gives him every chance. He settles at the rear, comes off the bridle willingly and keeps finding. The long York straight should allow P J McDonald to delay the challenge, and a race containing the returning front-runner Quickthorn ought to provide a proper pace. Good to Soft is also within his range.

The strongest objection is class. Mount Atlas must improve from a mark of 112 to beat horses rated 115, but he was already awarded a performance figure of 116 for his narrow course third in June. At 13/2, that small ratings gap is worth accepting.

VERDICT: MOUNT ATLAS, 2pt win at 13/2, generally available. Back at 6/1 or bigger. The stake remains 2pt win throughout the acceptable range. CABALLO DE MAR is the next best, provided his Gold Cup defeat has left no mark.

York 3.00 | ADAAY OF SCARLETT | 2pt win at 9/2

NEXT BEST: ARAPAHO GOLD

Arapaho Gold is unbeaten in three starts and deserves to head the Gimcrack market. He travelled freely before winning a Newbury Listed race, despite meeting interference early, and has repeatedly shown enough pace to hold a position. The question is whether 3/1 fully reflects the strength of what he has beaten. He is improving, but his peak performance figure is not superior to the best form already achieved by the selection.

Marco Polo finished strongly on his Curragh debut and is certain to improve for Aidan O'Brien, while Matteo brings an unbeaten record and Never Enough won his Ascot maiden with authority. Each is taking a large step into Group company. Agamemnon has useful Listed and Group 3 placings, but must reverse Newbury form with Arapaho Gold.

ADAAY OF SCARLETT has become a standing joke for finishing second, yet that consistency is precisely why 9/2 appeals. He has filled the runner-up position in the National Stakes, Coventry, July Stakes and Richmond Stakes, repeatedly operating at or near the level required to win this race. At Goodwood he was denied room at a crucial stage, moved through to lead inside the final furlong and was caught only late by Man's Best Friend.

Cheekpieces are applied for the first time. They are not a magic answer, but a more concentrated effort at the business end could be enough for a colt who has already demonstrated Group-class speed. Oisin Murphy can race close to Arapaho Gold from stall three, and the softened ground should place greater emphasis on proven six-furlong stamina rather than raw maiden speed.

I make the pair much closer than the prices imply. Arapaho Gold may have the higher ceiling, but Adaay Of Scarlett has already run the right race four times. At 9/2, I am prepared to trust that experience and the equipment change.

VERDICT: ADAAY OF SCARLETT, 2pt win at 9/2, generally available. Back at 7/2 or bigger. The stake remains 2pt win throughout the acceptable range. ARAPAHO GOLD is the next best and the likeliest danger.

York 3.35 | PERSHAADA | 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, 4 places

NEXT BEST: BACIO

The Nunthorpe market asks us to believe Bacio can move directly from a three-year-old handicap into the top level. His Royal Ascot performance was exceptional. He travelled with blistering speed near the rail and powered clear of 26 rivals, earning a performance figure well beyond his old mark. He might simply be the fastest horse in this race, but 10/3 allows no margin for his lack of York experience or the class rise. Our Nunthorpe race profile explains why this five-furlong test exposes even small weaknesses in position and rhythm.

Rayevka has improved since returning to five furlongs and was beaten only narrowly at Royal Ascot. American Affair rediscovered his best when winning the King George Stakes at Goodwood and has valuable York form. Mission Central is another improving three-year-old, while last year's winner Asfoora is impossible to dismiss at 14/1 despite a disappointing season.

PERSHAADA receives 25lb from most of the older males, and that transforms her chance. She finished fourth against 26 rivals at Royal Ascot, then produced a decisive late burst to win the Molecomb at Goodwood. Her official mark of 106 understates the value of the allowance in a race where several older horses are rated only a few pounds higher.

The case against her is historical and tactical. Juveniles rarely win the Nunthorpe, with Kingsgate Native in 2007 the most recent example, and she has not raced at York. Those are proper objections. The counterargument is that she has already coped with a huge Ascot field, has won a recognised juvenile sprint trial and gets the sort of weight that can make a two-year-old extremely difficult to catch over a fast five furlongs.

There is pace across the track through Bacio, American Affair, Redorange and Mission Central. Silvestre De Sousa can follow the strongest group from stall 11 and allow the filly to use her finishing speed rather than forcing her into an early duel. At 11/1, the market is paying us to accept the age statistic.

VERDICT: PERSHAADA, 0.75pt e/w at 11/1, 4 places, generally available. Back at 10/1 or bigger. At 10/1, the staking band becomes 1pt e/w. BACIO is the next best and the horse with the most explosive recent performance, but 10/3 is short for this rise in class.

York 4.10 | MASTER VINTNER | 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, 5 places

NEXT BEST: MASTER BUILDER

Wave Rider is favourite because a mark of 99 could underestimate a horse who travelled strongly through novice company last season. His Bahrain campaign did not produce a win, however, and he was only eleventh at Goodwood on his return to Britain. The move to a mile and a half may help, but 5/1 prices the improvement as though it has already happened.

Master Builder is the most obvious alternative. He won a 17-runner course-and-distance handicap in May, travelling easily before doing enough in front, and a 7lb rise still leaves him below an old peak mark. The 100-day absence is the issue. He has been freshened deliberately, but this is a deeper race and he cannot afford to race too keenly on softened ground.

MASTER VINTNER arrives in better order than most. He has finished second, second and first on his last three starts at a mile and a half, and his Thirsk success showed a sharper change of gear than the bare winning margin. He settled behind the pace, moved into contention smoothly and finished strongly once asked. The handicapper has raised him 5lb, but his progressive sequence suggests that is not punitive.

The Newmarket failure in May is the obvious blemish. He raced close to the pace and faded, whereas his better efforts have come with a more patient ride. Rossa Ryan should be able to obtain cover from stall 16 and avoid committing early. A solid gallop from French Duke, Explode and Say What You See would allow him to use his stamina late.

At 14/1 with five places, the price is too large for a progressive four-year-old with three consecutive strong staying efforts. Master Builder is the next best because course-and-distance form carries extra value on this track, but Master Vintner has the more reliable recent profile.

VERDICT: MASTER VINTNER, 0.75pt e/w at 14/1, 5 places with William Hill. Back at 11/1 or bigger. If he shortens to 10/1, use 1pt e/w. MASTER BUILDER is the next best at 13/2 or bigger.

York 4.45 | LAUNCH SEQUENCE | 2pt win at 11/2

NEXT BEST: LANCASTER TOWER

The Convivial is never an easy maiden because several expensively bred newcomers arrive with reputations that the public cannot properly measure. Oklahoma is favourite after finishing second at the Curragh and third at Killarney. He has ability and Ryan Moore rides, but he was beaten at 3/10 last time and did not find as much as expected when challenged.

Lancaster Tower was also beaten at odds-on, finishing third at Sandown after moving into contention smoothly. That race came over today's seven furlongs and he is bred to improve with racing, so a much better performance is plausible. Speyside finished third on debut and Oisin Murphy rides, while the debutants Benjamin Hornigold, My Remas and Magwitch all represent capable yards.

LAUNCH SEQUENCE brings the best piece of established form. He finished third in a 15-runner Goodwood maiden, closing strongly after being asked for his effort more than two furlongs out. The two horses in front had already shown useful ability and the performance figure was comfortably higher than those achieved by the other raced principals.

His Doncaster debut had also contained promise. He looked unfurnished, lost his position and then rallied to grab third. The Goodwood run showed he had learned from that experience, and the move from six to seven furlongs should suit a colt who has twice done his best work late. James Doyle should be able to keep him in the clear from stall 11.

The risk is that one of the newcomers is above average, but 11/2 is a fair price for the horse who has already run to the required level. Lancaster Tower is preferred to Oklahoma as the danger because he is likely to progress more for his sole start.

VERDICT: LAUNCH SEQUENCE, 2pt win at 11/2 with PricedUp. Back at 4/1 or bigger. The stake remains 2pt win within that range. LANCASTER TOWER is the next best and should improve considerably from Sandown.

York 5.20 | PLAID | 1pt e/w at 15/2, 5 places

NEXT BEST: SILVER LAKE

Silver Lake is the obvious progressive filly. She has won successive ten-furlong handicaps at Salisbury and Goodwood, travelling close to the pace before asserting. Her mark has risen from 75 to 86 and the manner of those victories suggests she can cope, but 2/1 with only one firm is a short price in a 16-runner Class 2.

Lady Dora Mae is admirably consistent and ran second in France only seven days ago. She has now filled the runner-up position four times in five starts and clearly belongs at this level. That sequence also explains the hesitation at 4/1. She races keenly, finds trouble or meets one too strong often enough to make her hard to support as a win bet.

PLAID remains less exposed. She bolted up at Hamilton in May from a mark of 75, then found soft ground and a shorter trip against her at Goodwood. Her latest Hamilton third was better than the result. She was denied room at a crucial stage, switched left and stayed on once clear. The handicapper has moved her to 92, but the ease of the earlier success suggested that sort of mark was within reach.

The return to ten and a half furlongs should suit, and Oisin Murphy can use her cruising speed to obtain a position from stall 17 before conserving energy for the long straight. The wide draw is the concern, so she cannot afford to race three deep through the first bend. If Murphy finds cover, she has the pace and stamina to trouble a favourite conceding 6lb.

Food For Thought is a value danger at 14/1 because she has finished second twice since winning, although she may be vulnerable if pressured for the lead. Plaid has more tactical flexibility and a stronger case for further improvement.

VERDICT: PLAID, 1pt e/w at 15/2, 5 places with William Hill or Unibet. Back at 7/1 or bigger. If she shortens to 6/1 or 13/2, use 2pt win. SILVER LAKE is the next best but is short below 5/2.

Best bets of the day

The NAP is Adaay Of Scarlett. Four consecutive seconds may make him look exposed, but those runs came in the right juvenile races and his Goodwood effort was better than the bare margin after he was short of room. First-time cheekpieces and 9/2 make him a stronger bet than the unbeaten favourite at 3/1.

The next best is Mount Atlas. His latest four runs show a stayer moving in the right direction, and two excellent York efforts remove the usual course doubt. He must prove himself in Group company, but 13/2 compensates for that rise.

The best handicap bet is Outback Heat. His Royal Ascot second in a field of 30 is the strongest big-field mile performance in the opener, and 12/1 with five places is a much more attractive proposition than 7/2 about the favourite.
