The essentials
Price comparison means checking what the same outcome pays with more than one operator. Small differences compound across repeated bets, but only when the market definition, rules and availability are genuinely equivalent.
Compare like with like: the selection, event, settlement rules and captured time should all match.
Why the price matters
Suppose one bookmaker offers 2.00 and another offers 2.10. A £10 winning stake returns £20 at the first and £21 at the second. The extra pound is not evidence that the selection is more likely to win. It is simply a better potential return for accepting the same outcome risk.
At 2.00 the break-even rate is 50%. At 2.10 it is about 47.62%. See implied probability for the full calculation.
A practical comparison checklist
- Match the event. Check the date, competition and participants.
- Match the market. Full time, extra time and qualification markets are different.
- Check each-way terms. Place numbers and fractions can change the value of a racing bet.
- Check deductions and ties. Rule 4, dead-heat and void rules can affect returns.
- Confirm availability. A headline price may have moved or be restricted before a bet is accepted.
- Record the evidence. Note the time, source and price you could realistically take.
Worked price comparison
For a £20 single, 7/4 gives potential profit of £35 and 15/8 gives £37.50. The difference is £2.50 if the selection wins. Both stakes still risk a £20 loss if it does not.
The calculation should not persuade you to bet. First decide whether the selection meets your criteria. Price comparison happens after that decision, not instead of it.
When the highest number is not directly comparable
A betting exchange price may be shown before commission. A bookmaker may use different settlement rules, place terms or maximum stakes. An enhanced price may apply only to a small stake or require an opt-in. Read the applicable rules rather than relying on the headline number.
Comparing the complete market can also reveal its overround and betting margin, but the best overall book does not guarantee the best price for one selection.
Use the information responsibly
Better calculations can improve your understanding, but they cannot make an uncertain outcome certain. If you choose to bet, set affordable money and time limits before you start. Never use money needed for bills, borrow to bet or increase a stake to recover a loss.
