Patrick Kane supplied the occasion. Chicago's younger players supplied the goals. The Blackhawks beat the St Louis Blues 4-2 at United Center on Tuesday night, ending a three-game losing start in Kane's first home appearance in a Chicago sweater since February 2023.

Sam Rinzel and Anton Frondell turned a first-period deficit into a second-period lead, before Cole Smith and Frank Nazar scored into an empty net. Spencer Knight made 26 saves. Kane finished without a point, a useful distinction on a night whose emotional centre and competitive outcome belonged to different generations.

For Chicago, the win changes the immediate conversation without settling the bigger one. The Blackhawks are 1-3-0, not suddenly a finished product. What they offered was a practical example of how the returning veteran can share a stage with the players expected to shape the club's next chapter.

The second period did the heavy lifting

Mason McTavish put St Louis ahead at 15:38 of the opening period, finishing after Connor McMichael collected a Chicago giveaway and carried the puck into the attacking zone. The Blues had interrupted the homecoming script before Chicago had a goal to celebrate.

There was another apparent setback early in the second period. McMichael put the puck in the net at 1:05, but Chicago challenged for offside and the goal was overturned after review. That decision preserved a one-goal deficit. It did not itself create the comeback, but it prevented the Blackhawks having to chase a different game.

Rinzel equalised on the power play at 5:40, following up Nazar's shot and finishing the rebound. Nick Lardis also received an assist. Chicago had entered the night without a power-play goal from seven opportunities; this was the first conversion of the season and Rinzel's first career goal with the extra man.

Two minutes later, Frondell made it 2-1. Artyom Levshunov moved from the right point through the slot and delivered the pass, with Teuvo Teravainen also credited with an assist. The sequence gave Chicago contributions from its young defence and attack rather than asking Kane to manufacture a rescue.

That is the more useful takeaway for readers following the US Sports hub. A comeback built through several developing players tells us more about the team's options than a ceremonial welcome alone. It remains one night's evidence, but it is evidence of something the Blackhawks need to repeat.

A 4-2 score with a tighter finish

The final margin needs context. Chicago led only 2-1 deep into the third period, and the two goals that extended its total came after St Louis removed goalkeeper Joel Hofer for an additional attacker.

Smith scored short-handed into the empty net at 18:51. McMichael then replied on a six-on-four power play at 19:22, reducing the gap to 3-2 with 38 seconds left. Nazar's empty-net finish at 19:56 finally removed the remaining doubt, with Tyler Bertuzzi and Frondell assisting.

The official box score records 28 St Louis shots to Chicago's 21. Knight stopped 26 of those 28, while Hofer made 17 saves from the 19 shots he faced. The remaining Chicago goals were into an unguarded net. Those numbers explain why the result should not be mistaken for a comfortable attacking domination.

They also identify Knight's contribution. Chicago needed its goalkeeper to protect the lead created in the second period. A narrow advantage survived long enough for the late empty-net opportunities, even though the Blues briefly made the closing seconds uncomfortable again.

Homecoming, not a first return to the building

Kane's history made the occasion distinctive, but the wording matters. This was not his first appearance at United Center since leaving Chicago. He had played there for Detroit on 13 December 2025. Tuesday was his first home game in Blackhawks colours since 21 February 2023.

The difference is the shirt and the relationship it represents. Kane was Chicago's first overall draft pick in 2007 and helped the club win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015. His return restored a direct connection to those teams without restoring the conditions that made them champions.

The 37-year-old played 20 minutes and 55 seconds, recorded two shots and went without a goal or assist. Frondell and Nazar each finished with a goal and an assist. Rinzel added the power-play goal. Chicago could celebrate Kane while relying on others for the decisive entries on the scoresheet.

There is a leadership question here as well as a sentimental one. In the club's earlier Bedard captaincy announcement, the balance between established experience and the next generation was already central. This result gives that discussion a match example, not a guarantee that the transition will be smooth.

What Chicago carries into Thursday

The Blackhawks travel to the New York Islanders on Thursday, 8 October, with the club listing a 6:30pm Central start. There is an immediate availability concern: Teravainen did not return for the third period after an apparent lower-body injury. Coach Jeff Blashill said he would not travel for the Islanders game; no longer-term return date was established in the postgame report.

Chicago's next test is therefore about continuity. Can the power play build on its first conversion? Can the young players keep creating when the arena is not celebrating a famous return? Can the team protect a lead without requiring another late escape? Those are questions, not predictions.

For anyone considering betting, a homecoming atmosphere and one win are not reliable shortcuts to a price or a forecast. This is a match report, not a betting recommendation. Betting is for adults aged 18 and over, outcomes remain uncertain and nobody needs to gamble to follow the sport.
